Not mine but a friend has talked himself into spending hilarious money
At the other end of the scale, my silly little jdm Seiko that is solar/radio and tells far better time
is that an overseas?
goddamn
too busy to me but still impressive
yup it is
someone cashapp me 7 grand
That grand seiko is gorgeous, I'm only a brokey who can afford cocktail time
Same pal, same
I'm happy with it, but I want an everyday next but there's just so much choice
Strongly considering an Alpinist for my next one, second hand you can get lucky and find one around $500
Thank God my wrists are too small for a an automatic watch. Otherwise thats another hobby that will drain all my money
obviously this is purely personal opinion but i feel like that VC is awful
if you want to get a chronograph, there are better options
if you want to get something by vacheron, there are better options
unrelated - i have a tiny collection and am looking for storage options........i'm thinking maybe a roll so i can put them in a small safe? instead of a display box
What's like the budget go-to-watch for y'all?
And what do you call "budget" lmao
right now i have at least one piece in a..uhhhh.......sock
w/o a lot of thought, my recs would be like..........
- GWM5610 g-shock for something rugged/durable (imo, similar coolness as a automatic mechanical watch)
- seiko 5 line is a common rec - reliable, etc
- seiko alpinist, but not really - i feel like seiko has raised their prices on mid-level stuff, but it's still nice looking
- seiko prospex divers - very chunky and kinda fun, but price has gone up
- timex weekender for very cheap
- timex q reissue line for a little less cheap, but more interesting
- hamilton khako - similar to the alpinist/seiko prospex line, price has gone up a bit in the last few years
- moonswatch if you want something a little fun, but it's also purely plastic and quartz
and/or just google "hodinkee budget watch" or something
+1 on the timex weekender.. I have one with a cream face and it’s super versatile plus it’s fun to experiment with straps
much appreciated!
You’d be better off getting an Aliexpress moonswatch clone for $30 than the real thing
Some even have better crystals
Tempting ngl
I had a moonswatch, sold it for a small profit, and replaced it with a Pagani Speedmaster homage that cost like £70. The Pagani is so much better in every single way it isn't even funny. Right down to having a much better (Seiko) movement.
Citizen Tsuyosa is a fantastic watch for the price. I'd buy one in an instant if it didn't have a cyclops
I've been looking at one, I really like the yellow and turquoise but have no idea how you match them to an outfit
Its an accessory, you don't need to get overly matchy with it. The yellow dial is probably the hardest to match, but belter summer piece in particular
What is the best/most versatile color of the tsuyoda dial in your opinion ?
Black is obviously the most versatile but most boring
Yellow/Teal are the most fun to me
Thanks, I have already a blue dial seiko 5, what would be your recommendation for something more formal. I’m currently in Japan for holidays and I consider a tsuyosa .
Man I have no idea, pick what you like the most when you try one on!
Black/Dark Blue/Dark Green would be the most traditionally formal, but don't let that limit you
Ok thanks
the whole point of the moonswatch is that it's fun(ny)
getting an ali* or whatever brand dupe misses the point
like ok you paid a little bit less to have a similarly shitty quartz/plastic watch
Yea but it’s built like a mcdonalds toy and is still impossible to get in any worthwhile colorway
I asked at the 5th ave store in June of this year and the guy just laughed at me
Told me I could pick pink or yellow
Checked in Amsterdam last month, same situation but also now with a few of the other ugly colors
I cannot stress enough how badly built the moonswatch is
The neptune was leaving blue stains on peoples arms where the dye leaked
I really want a Cartier Santos but no where close to affording it. I found this one from Fossil called Caraway that basically looks like the Santos. Is thus lame and which color between the two should I get lol
I guess better question is which will be wearable w the most outfits. Is the brown strap with yellow tones neutral enough to go w anything?
Thats going to depend on your skin tone and what if any other jewellery you wear, but in general the silver one would be easier to dress down.
Whoops, I was using a strong blue filter on my phone and couldn't tell I posted the wrong watch. I meant this yellow toned one
I'm between this one and the silver bracelet I posted
I don't wear other jewelry yet other than my wedding band that is charcoal with a silver accent
I'm a tan Caucasian (Italian) if that helps
Oh, thats a champagne dial, very nice
definitely versatile on that brown strap
Thanks I was leaning towards that one over the silver bracelet style. I see what you mean about the bracelet being easier to style down
I recently picked up this Seiko King Quartz from 1976. The crystal is a but scratched but overall it's in good condition. Now that integrated bracelets are back it feels pretty modern
love those 70s quartz watches, you can pick up some amazing ones
Since this is a King it does feel like the construction is a step up from your average Seiko, but the quartzes sell for pretty cheap compared to the mechanicals from the same era. Hilarious because at the time Quartz watches were way more expensive
Also fyi this is a 36mm and I have pretty big wrists (~7.75").
That dial is sick
Thank you! Now I need to stop myself from buying more blue dial watches lol
The king and grand quartzes have some great textured dials. If you want one if highly recommend finding one with the original bracelet, the construction feels great
It should have the kq or gq logo on the clasp
Plz ignore my dogs butt
the new grand seiko quartzes are nuts. Specced to go 50 years without needing a service
But being GS, not cheap
I wish their current quartzes had more interesting dials. I honestly think the quartz movement is really cool, but they put their best dials on the automatic watches and I want something that doesn't just look like watch
I love the fact that you can adjust the hour hand independently on their quartzes
skyflake quartz tho
touche
if it’s an acrylic crystal, get some polywatch
I got a Vostok komanderskie for $74, amazing mechanical watch for what I paid. I am really enjoying it, to the point I've been wearing it more than the Dan Henry I bought 2 years ago.
That's some Soviet pricing
What variant did you get? I see they have a field, a diver, and a pilot.
where did you get it from?
been looking for a while but not sure I fancy going down the meranom route atm.
Otherwise, will throw in my Seiko Champion from the early 60s!
I inherited from my dad his old datejust. Not sure exactly which year, but I think it dates to late 60s/early 70s due to lack of a quick date mechanism.

I'm still on the hunt for something that looks like the Cartier Santos. Anyone know if this brand good?
Longines are fairly popular, afaik
Longines is a great brand, they are one of the best brands in the entry-level luxury space. What I'll mention is the specific variant you have there is pretty small. Take a look at the photos on Longine's website to see how it fits on a woman's wrist.

My advice would be to find an Authorized dealer and try the different sizes on in person
Also I saw you were looking at Fossils earlier so I'm guessing you aren't married to the idea of a higher end watch. Consider looking at Seiko or Bulova.

I wish my dad had a non-Timex watch. All I inherited from him was a penchant for lame jokes.
Lol that's a handy gift to have
That's such a beautiful watch. I love the look of the vintage datejusts they're so elegant
It's pretty unreliable, so I don't wear it much, but my dad's old kaleidoscope watch is one of the coolest I've seen.
Haha I keep getting these things advertised to me on Insta
Could be worse, could try and pass you a gold rolex 🤢
Hey Rolex is great if it's free
Thank you. It's pretty different from any other watch I've owned but am enjoying incorporating it into my outfits
Oh really? I didn't know any brands made any in this style still.
Does it actually tell you the time?
Yeah, it's a fully working mechanical watch. The red hands are for hour and minute, no second hand
Thanks I think I recently also found this one. I think the fossil is a little nicer aesthetically but this is also in my list.
Thanks for the heads up. Is that why the one I listed is advertised as women's? I couldn't figure out why because it's not super feminine to me. So it's more of a size thing? I have small wrists they're 7in
Movement shot
True but having a dad with horrible taste 😦
It'll be a size thing
It's listed as women's because of the size for sure. I think the one you picked might be too small but I think trying it on in person should give you a better sense. The other difference between the different variants is the movement-- yours has a quartz and the 2 I linked are automatic so think about what your preference would be.
7" is pretty much bang on average wrist size fwiw, most watched will look great on you
I agree the Seiko dial is a bit bland. The issue with Fossil is that fit the amount of money you aren't necessarily getting the best construction which is why I was pointing you to the 2 brands I mentioned. I'd also say to take a look at Hamilton, they have some affordable tank-styles.
Gotcha thanks. Yeah I think I want an automatic now. The Bulova is sick, it's also in the top of my list, but I was hoping to find a watch w roman numerals. I think Bulova makes one but it's also advertised as women's and has more feminine straps
IMO for the tank style you actually want a quartz watch, its what Cartier use after all
Seiko make a bunch of variations on the style and if you go second hand you can get one for less than a fossil (and far better quality)
Black Dial Leather Strap My Way 98A261 | Bulova
Incorporating vintage Bulova designs with the unmistakable elements of legendary performer, Frank Sinatra, the ‘My Way’ watch features a stainless steel rectangular case with a black dial, gold-tone hands and markers. Frank Sinatra’s signature is displayed under the Bulova logo and his iconic Fedora hat is etched on the gold-tone crown, as well ...
Why do you suggest quartz for the tank style? I thought that was just the internal mechanism or.. ?
Seeing those 3 sizes really helped. I see how tiny the womens/small is. The large one is the "mens' and really sick but loses the Roman numerals. Still up in my list tho. Good idea to find a dealer I'll have to do that so I can see them in person
If you go to a dealer you can say that you want a tank-style and say your price range and they'll probably have other options too
Generally speaking allows for smaller, and particularly, thinner watches
Buy Vostok.com, shipped fast from Florida, no complaints. You can def tell it's a $74 Soviet type mech, but that's part of the charm, you can beat the hell out of it, mod it, mess around with it's interior, and you probably won't mess it up, but even if you, who cares?
Is thinner an aesthetic advantage for those square/rectangle shaped ones ? Because they're taller I guess?
I got the one with the press fit diver bezel. It's really handy for keeping rough track of time, like setting the red dot to when you have to leave by, or setting it to the current position of the minute hand to be able to gut check time elapsed at a glance. I really like it.
yes because as a dress watch, you really want it to be able to easily slip under a shirt cuff
Sweet, thanks
and yeah, not concerned aout the quality - I want a beater other than my Casio for uni
I'd have bought a vintage one but I want waterproofing so
It's also great for a dress watch you only wear every now and then to not have to adjust it each time you put it on
solar quartz is optimal for 99% of use cases gets dragged off stage by mechanical watch purists
I've been looking at eco drives a lot lately for that reason
Citizen are kinda great right now
Yeah, only problem I have is that they're so widespread that I try to find a local retailer and half those retailers only have a handful of boring models in stock
Similar issue with seiko
Make sure you check the specs for each watch, some have 10m water resistance only (rain and washing your hands is fine, probably don't swim with it), others are based on their amphibia dive model and have an official 200m water resistance.
These are so sick I just don't love the Sinatra sig. Wish they didn't have that . And I love his music, listened to all his albums a million times, but I'm almost 40 and Italian and don't want to look and feel like an old Italian man lol
I already drive a cadilliac and don't want to stereotyped myself even further lmao
It's a shame because they really are sick, it's pretty close to what I'm looking for. Does the longine reallt seem too thick to fit under a long sleeved shirt? A lot of my shirts I get custom anyway with a watch allowance but I really don't want to be locked into that
It's 10.3 mm thick which is pretty thin for an automatic. I'm gonna give the same advice, try it on in person
JDM >>>
10mm should fit under most shirts yeah
If you feel like you know the kind of watch you want to wear and the dimensions you like, I'd recommend buying online for Seiko and Citizen. However, if you are starting from square one, I always tell people to start by just going to a jeweler and trying different watches on. Even if you don't end up buying from them directly you can see what size and styles you like on your wrist.
One of my first watches was a pilot chrono from Citizen. I don't wear it that often but it's nice that I can leave it for weeks at a time and then just pick it up and go
Tbh every watch I've bought in my life has been online without first seeing it in person. Though I tend to get smaller watches and feel like if I were to buy a diver or other >40mm watch, then I'd want to see it on me first.
I hate when non-GMT watches have GMT bezels.
I would disagree that the watch you linked is small since the site states the dimensions are 23x37mm which is pretty much in the territory of classic (Men's) Cartier Tank size. TBH I feel like there is too much overthinking these days about watch sizes - like, nobody gave a damn about watch size before watch YouTubers started talking about "proper" watch sizes. I actually love smaller watches but It took me a while to figure that out as the first watch I bought was a 40mm diver (under the influence of the influencers), but I ended up hating wearing it so I sold it.
This is my newest piece - I wanted something small, light, affordable and with 10bar wr that I can wear every now and then. So this citizen ticked all the boxes. It's listed as a woman's watch, but at 34mm I fell it's more unisex. But ultimately, no one cares - I love wearing it!
Watches being too big is way more of an actual issue
I finally treated myself with this nice souvenir from Japan
square Gshocks bes tGshocks
And this one is shining
I'm realizing I had a huge brainfart and misread the original watch @drew_fc linked as being 27mm lug to lug. The second one I linked is the same size as his original, I think it's a good size for a men's tank-style watch.
The trend recently has been for bigger watches which I think works with certain styles. But I agree that a smaller watch can look really elegant, especially for a dress watch.
Thanks, I thought that too but then when I saw the photos they looked kind of tiny?
It looks like you can configure the larger "mens" size to have that same exact face but then it's 1.7k lol. Figures because that's def the one I'd buy. I'll have to find a dealer but haven't had any luck finding one nearby in NJ, I might have to go into NYC
is this one of the titanium ones?
@drew_fc are you looking for something like a santos? or something like a tank
i ask bc the watches you've been posting are all very tank-like (which is fine, tanks are great)
but the santos is a bit different........more square, the screws around the bezel, etc
the dolcevita does look quite nice (and also quite similar to a tank)........not sure if this is a pro or con
dunno the history, but i don't think longines is a brand that would simply knock off another iconic watch?
there are also soooooo many tanks and santos on the secondary market, so maybe browse chrono24 a bit to see if there's anything that looks interesting
I guess I prefer the square look but didn't find much of those searching for Santos looking ones with Roman numerals
Thanks, I didn't hear of chrono24, will check it out
All brands do this to one degree or another
fair
fwiw i think this example is a little more egregious than others (e.g., down to the blued hands)
I second this. Way better option than the Fossil one if you're looking for a rectangle watch
Omg it's even shaped like a bottle cap

Thinking of grabbing one of these, does anyone know if that strap can be changed for a leather one?
Nice thanks! I saw the white faced ones with the strap but wasn't sure if the bracelet style was also removable but I guess you're saying here it is
I'd double check reviewes, but it's not an integrated bracelet design so I'd be amazed if it isn't replacable
lord help me, I cannot get the Seiko Alpinist out of my head, and am going to buy one before year end
I fucking hate mixed metals, why do I like this so much?
That is a very handsome green.
Nice color !
I feel you, last year I was totally blocked on this one. But never pulled the trigger 🤷♂️
The only thing I'm not wild on is the cyclops
The hands look soooo nice
A nice alternative for square watches, that i recently discovered : the Lip Rudy Meyer. Kind of a mix between a Lip T24 and a Bell&Ross.
How big is it
You'll be able to remove that bracelet and add a leather band. You can see the back of the bracelet in that posting and it has removable spring bars. You can either have a jeweler do it or you can buy a spring bar tool and do it yourself
Ok thanks, how complicated is it? I tried to remove links from my movado once and it was a huge pain
Anyone know if this website is legit? Would like to order from here as it has best shipping time and is also cheaper https://www.discovery-japan.me/category/select/pid/9425/currency/USD
Removing links is probably harder than removing the whole bracelet, but for some people it's definitely tme. If you just want to wear it on leather all the time a jeweler can do it for you.
I've not personally seen that website, but I'll let other people in the chat chime in since they might be more familiar
swapping out a bracelet for a strap takes like 30 seconds
discovery japan is legit 👍
Thanks gents
"self winding" is another way of saying automatic, right? Just want to be sure before I order this thing I wont have to hand wind
yes
Actually I measured my wrist wrong. When I measure it tightly at the top of the wrist, it's 6.5in not 7. I wonder if this 42mm watch will look dumb on me
really depends on the lugs on the watch. Ive a 42mm speedmaster homage/ripoff that fits very comfortably on my 6.75" wrist

It’s such a nice design. What does the second crown do?
had to do it to em
It turns the inside compass bezel
Thoughts on the tissot 35 prx? I've got small ass 6" wrist and have limited options. Want to get a junghans maxbill at some point but not in the near future.
I actually tried one on last night in a bar, weirdly. The case is small and the lugs conform really well to the wrist.
Definitely try one on but for the price they're a great option, especially for smaller wrists.
Thanks!
I agree. I'm fine with the bigger version but i've seen the 35mm and seems great
Do GMT watches allow you to change what time zone they are indicating or are they locked into GMT? I'm working a remote job that's in a different time zone and want a cool dual time zone watch
Gear Patrol
The GMT Watch, Explained
The GMT watch is brilliant not because of its complexity but because of its simple ingenuity. Here's what you need to know about it.
Yup you can change them to any timezone
nice, thanks for sharing the history, that's pretty cool
I'm 0/2 on Watches. I ordered the Seiko fake Tank watch, dont like it. And the Orient Bambino. Also don't love it - I dont like the glass dome shape to the case
My new dream watch is the Longines Master, but will have to drive into NYC to see it in person
Plus can't afford it anyway now lol
What didn’t you like about the seiko? What size did you get?
size is just called 'standard' on Amazon. I dunno, I guess it's kind of plain to me
gmt watches track 2-3 timezones (regular hands, gmt hand, bezel)
maybe with the bucherer acquisition, rolexes will be readily available at retail (haha lol good one)
This one is pretty cool
Damn it's 42.5 tho. I need 40
I think there are some gmts that you can’t adjust the hand
It’s smaller on the wrist than you think
I have a 6.5” wrist and comfortably wear a seiko of the same case
The lug to lug is short
I love how the temp gauge looks like a Honda motorcycle tach
Nice thanks for sharing. I'm also 6.5 so maybe it works
Why do watch prices seem so random? They'll be something like a Orient and then Orient Star which practically look the same but are 3-5x the price. Same with Seikos, some cost 3k+ and I can hardly tell the difference by looks a lone. The rolexs and omegas dont look any nicer than a Longines to me which are fraction of the price. Are the higher cost ones more for watch nerds because they have higher end internals or something ?
The movement (what makes the watch move) is where a lot of value is extracted. There’s also exotic materials that are used, short runs and general popularity that leads to the price tag.
The watches here for the most part are restrained. There’s not really any tourbillons or exotic escapes and skeletons
Rolex is a huge markup for the name now which I guess would be general popularity
It’s been a name for decades though.
Delayed reply, long story short...
-Took a business trip to Switzerland when I was like a 26. I think I was in Lauterbrunnen.
-Thought ”I should get a watch,” from a position of complete ignorance.
-Literally stopped an old man on the street and asked him where I should buy a watch.
-Took me to a shop about the size of three telephone booths, with an even older man. Place was totally disorganized and full of watches, watch parts and stuff.
-Guy was actually super friendly and we talked for a while. He gave me chocolate.
-I asked him for a unique watch made in Switzerland, and he sold me this one...I think I paid around 2500 USD, but this in 2004. I believe it was used.
-I wore it a ton for years. It had a really nice alligator strap that I didn't take care of, so it fell apart after maybe a decade.
-I have made a few half-hearted attempt to identify it, but never aucc.
Here it is again for reference
Ok nvm there’s some wild escapes and skeletons here.
I don't know much about watches, but Google led me to a similar looking watch identified as Myret Skeleton from the 70s: https://zrhbrg.ch/products/myret-skeleton-swiss-vintage-watch
Zurichberg
Myret Skeleton
A beautifully decorated skeleton in excellent condition | Myret was a watch brand from Renan in the canton of Bern, registered on the Route des Convers. Little is known about the company's history. However, the watches are beautifully crafted, which was certainly reflected in their price range.
A few examples of the Hamilton 9928 I saw listed on ebay look close, but the crown and lug style among other details don't seem to match.
what model is this? It's cute
Ts1200
Aryton Senna had one
There’s the ts1000 too that has a straight temp gauge
can I get a queer temp gauge?
You need a gshock for that
This is definitely it, look at the decoration over the hairspring
Good ID
The engraving is kinda nutty
just a follow up question about pricing feeling random.. the Seiko is 600 and the Orient is 160, why? they appear nearly identical to me
(I just ordered the Seiko on amazong Try before you Buy but still curious)
without knowing the specs its hard to say for sure, but generally a Prospex would have better finishing than an entry level Orient, as well as better specs

wow thats a lot cheaper, thanks for the find
I'll order from here if the amazon one looks nice and return the amazon one
although that one has the blue subdials. . Blue version was cheaper on amazon, but not that cheap. But I dont see the black version on that site
Bear in mind you might have to pay local taxes and I'm not sure how much shipping is.. but Sakurawatches are great
The first (and only so far) automatic watch in my collection - I received it for my master graduation 💖
i was looking at the seiko 5 GMTs a few min ago......i will resist
Don’t
Get it
Stop resisting
what i really want is a rolex gmt, so i will be waiting indefinitely

Found in an antique jewelry store near my apartment
(Not purchased)
Platinum May be my favourite case material
where the fuck do you live that they just have Vacherons hanging about in antique stores
How much did they want?
A big city lol
Not a financially responsible move at this time lol
Also I’m not in love with the baton hands tbh
The case and lugs are the best part of the watch imo
I lived in London and was clearly going to the wrong second hand shops
$14,000 USD
Oh
Yeah
Lol
Yeah I get not buying it now lmao
Alas, the curse of expensive taste
Eventually I’ll get there but ya boi has loans to pay
I am incredibly lucky that I don't vibe with any of the big three, or Rolex, at all
This is the one I actually have my heart set on after I pay off my loans
This is good, have some actual personality
Eh I'm a bit of a fuckboi for Seiko, so not much better
I like the luxury brands, but I’d rather have something more unique most of the time
Thickness is always a killer for me so Seiko will never really be my thing unfortunately
does depend on the model, the new SARG is sub 12mm
That’s still thick to me LOL
damn
Also domed crystal adds height so even the elegance line isn’t my thing
Neo-vintage is my jam at this point
like, retro 70s stuff?
90s-mid2000s
Sapphire glass but still small and thin
This is usually the deal breaker for me but my SKX007 has a special place in my heart
Admittedly it’s less important if it’s a sports watch
My Milgauss is a bigboi
But that’s the exception for me
Don't need a dress watch if you don't get dressed up Milgauss is the exception to my not liking Rolexes, so of course it's wildly overpriced now even compared to the regular overpricedness of Rolex
lol only because they discontinued tbh
It was such good value when we purchased it ~10 yrs ago
how much if you don't mind my asking?
I forget exactly, maybe closer to 8k?
whew
Homage for me then 😄
Probably less bc we got it at discount

My daily driver, a birthday gift from my wife
YES!!!! My only Swiss watch was a Hamilton that knocked this look off, and I gave it to my Mom but she accidentally broke the glass, broke it again, and didn't want to pay to replace it a second time.
her replacement crystal was even domed, it was perfect
Hi ! My father gave me this pretty quartz watch that he wore younger every day. I usually wear black shoes and a brown belt at work. Does the watch strap have to be the same color as the shoes or belt?
Personally the shoes and belt should match
I don't care if none of them match but if you're trying to do the serious business casual+ thing it's supposed to all match
Ok so my belt is finally the problem
Matching colors matters more the higher the level of formality. If you're doing business smart or evening wear, then yes they should all match. Mismatching can be an intentional choice if you're trying to look more casual
Imo the watch band matters less than the shoes and belt being mismatched
my work outfit is not very formal: dress shirt and chinos, so maybe I overthink this.
Eh it's probably fine. Personally it wouldn't bother me.
Should I get a second hand Tissot Visodate for like 300 bucks? I want to buy it to symbolise some recent progression in my career

I still quite like the cyclops haha but this is super nice

That also looks super clean ngl
What's the ref number of this?
There’s no way I can justify it, but man I’ve fallen in love with the Cartier Santos tank lately.
Anyone know of a quartz alternative with a sapphire face?
Oh thanks, my brain equated “tank” with rectangular after a long day. Might look into vintage!

Nah I like this
It’s fun
It will sell well enough but they look horrible to me
Wtf i didn't hear about this detail
This is so bad
I love this nato strap
Did not buy but had to share this Vacheron I saw at an estate sale. 14k bracelet 18k case and they were selling it for 6500
I think the bracelet wasn't original, since swiss gold is usually 18k and there was no logo
Teardrop lugs are nice and good porcelain dial too
This was beautiful--If I were in a position to drop 6k on a watch I'd probably get it
But it's not even just the cost, I have to think about maintenance cost which is gonna be insane with a Vacheron
Got my dads old watch fixed up today. Got the crystal replaced since it had a big crack in it; new battery, and had it resized.
I have been eyeing the fifty fathoms chronograph in steel for a while now, i have small wrists and im buying that watch one day. Honestly the lug-to-lug makes it just slightly bareable but the case is t h i c c
If there are other Tissot PRX owners here, I just wanna let you know that they finally started selling the rubber band separetely on their website (in Europe at least). I've been waiting for this a lot.
What do you guys think of hermes h08? Slightly underrated?
Looks nice on the wrist in most photos ive seen
My friend tried it on the other day, he has 7.5" wrists and it just about fit him
bought a new watch today, 62MAS homage
is it possible for anything Hermes to be underrated
I know they actually have quite a long history of watchmaking, but I don't really think about their watches
how hard is it to change out a bracelet myself with a spring bar tool?
Is there a specific type of tool you recommend that's easier?
Pretty easy. Watch a couple YouTube videos to see how it's done. I have a spring bar tool from bergeon, I think they're standard among jewelers
That being said my watch guy made fun of me for having a dedicated tool and said he just uses a tiny screwdriver
ok thanks, I was thinking I might need to get one with a quick release, but the one I want doesn't have that
Yeah but theyre not exactly well known for their watches as much as their leather goods. When i think about hermes i think about luxury leather bags
Bulova Lunar Pilot w/ basic nylon strap.
Is that the smaller sized one?
yeah, seconding that it's comically easy with the tool, takes under a minute
Yep, 38 mm.
nice, the real moonwatch

@Shrimp my Ride we are watch brothers
Awesome! Yours looks newer and shiny-er🤣
It’s from the 80s but it got polished at the last service 😕
I actually don’t wear it much because it’s so shiny lol
Gotta rough that puppy up!!
It was a graduation gift and was serviced before I got it
Man can't even afford a real Timex
Wait nvm. It actually is the bigger version.
Real happy with the strapcoce jubilee bracelet I just got on my seiko panda
Btw does the adjustment look OK in terms if where the watch should sit on the arm? This is with it on as far as it can go
Looks great! Lovely watch, probably my favourite recent Seiko
got this yacht master for my graduation 7 years ago and wore it almost daily. I still love it as much as the day I first held it
My vintage Sea Dweller that my dad very generously passed on to me. Bought it new 40 or so years ago but spent most of its life in a safe. Extremely thankful that he gave it to me.
Looks fine. I wear mine looser cause I like to be able to move it around my wrist if it gets uncomfortable
Strapcode jubilee looks super sophisticated on the speedtimer. Handsome watch. Enjoy
Strap question - for folks who use leather straps, how do you deal with the smell? Baking soda? I'm interested in trying some leather straps again but the previous one got real stanky.
they only smell in an incredibly localized area, like within 2 inches of your wrist
the answer is technically to not sweat, but really just don't worry about it
yeah just clean em now and again
threw a black strap on my gq breda virgil
Wear it 🔥 it's so sad to own this watch and keep it in a safe
wear it til the wheels fall off
(then get it serviced)

Nice 70s vibes

love it. it's on my list of watches to get
The Lume on my Seiko Speedtimer doesn't seem to work well. Is there a trick to "charge" it or something during the day so it actually glows at night?
Don't expect bright lume from chronographs

It is kinda true though, brightest lume is always after you’ve been outside and then come inside to a dark room

it looks amazing on that red strap

got a new watch waiting for me at home 😈
LETS GOOO
Between those 2 I prefer the white one, I'm not a huge fan of the color on this silver watch.
I wouldn't worry too much about whether the watch case is the same color as your jewelry. A steel watch case is the sort of default, and it's fine to match with gold jewelry.
Other brands you might want to look at in a similar price range are Seiko (especially their essentials line), Citizen, and Orient.
Thank you! Those brands are also on my list; I know from a construction point of view Shinola isn't the greatest but imo they make some beautiful pieces.
https://tornek-rayville.us/collections/watches/products/tr-660-pre-order

If you compare it to a real vintage one it’s affordable! <:crying_sunglasses:796154085446778942>
Dont remind me, this is exactly how I bargain with myself
It's a lot of money for a time only dive watch with minimal finishing
I agree the brand heritage is extremely cool but for the almost 1k USD they want for it, there's just so many nicer watches out there
Yeah but the people that are buying it are probably buying it cause it’s exactly what they want
Like this feels like a very niche watch
No one is going “oh I just want a diver I’ll get a Tornek”
thats why I like it, I don't like any of the more modern styled ones and the middle ground of good looking divers that all just look like submariners aren't as exciting
It’s crazy how many more watch micro brands have been popping up over the last 3-5 years
A lot of formerly (relatively )affordable brands decided to push up their prices, leaving a gap in the market
62MAS homage arrived
First impressions are that it's insanely sick for costing all of £100
awesome! looks great
on the wrist today
side note, what are your thoughts on bracelets on the same hand as a watch? i know some people find this to be blasphemy because it might scratch the watch but i feel like those people also think even looking at a watch the wrong way will destroy its value. also, i don't mind a few scratches or signs of use - i'm not planning to resell and having to constantly worry about babying my watches seems like a stressful way to live
Went for pizza with my friend the other day while she tried to swap her dilapidated strap for a band
They even had a lil LED light at the table
love nomos!
If its sterling you’re not going to scratch much. If anything, a steel watch band will gouge into a silver bracelet long before the opposite occurs.
tell that to the people in r/watches lol
i dont know how people manage to damage their things to the degree they do, I get it if its a huge bracelet it can go up and over and scratch the crystal but you're going to be rubbing against materials harder than silver pretty often
you can scuff a steel watch on a desk, never mind a silver bracelet. I personally wouldn't double up on anything you're trying to baby (personally I don't give a shit, used watches look cool)
i'm with you. i wear all my watches and it shows. i've worked with a guy who was afraid of the desk and he would take off his watch and keep it in his drawer while at the office
One more reason to wear watches that are well within your price range!
What’s the point of wearing it at all at that point..
I mean I’ll be honest I take my watches off if I’m doing manual labor at work but that’s mostly cause I’m worried about the bandsaw vibrations messing with it or slamming it into a metal part
But that’s very rarely

I bought a $30 Seiko on Ebay from India over the summer. I absolutely LOVE the design so i bought it knowing it would likely need repaired. The crystal fell out and it stopped ticking shortly after i bought it. The full service repair at my local watch store was around $380, so all in the watch cost me $410. that’s in the ballpark cost of what a brand new one would cost me (some are less, some more) but all in all i prefer my more ~unique~ vintage one than a brand new one personally. I guess what i mean is, the watch is probably legit but expect to spend some $$ on repairs. some people would prefer buying new
got it, thanks for the heads up
this is mine ^ maybe silly to some to spend that much one a used one but i just think they look cooler
I dig the colors
wow those numbers are gorgeous
wearing my snk809 today
so good!
I'd not buy a seiko from India, unless I was very confident about the seller. There are a lot of 'refurbs' made with poor quality parts.
that said, it's 25 buckaroos and looks sick, sooo
It’s very likely to be made of cobbled together parts yeah
Yeah gotta be careful with the eBay sellers. Bought an skx a while back and the hands popped off during shipping. Luckily I had the tools to fix it and was planning to mod the thing anyway, but still
thats what im thinking. its no big deal if its not quality haha
got the watch 🥰
Simple Saturday
Nice. You heading out sailing? 😁
I might get one of these tank clones
Aren't the cases for those plated brass?
Seiko have some great steel Tanks that you can pick up for buttons
good call. if i get a metal watch, ill go with steel
Make sure it has a sapphire crystal. A lot of cheap tank watches usually have mineral glass.
Alternatively, acrylic crystals are very easily polished
And less prone to breakage
Just more maintenance tbh
They’re usually more domed so they add thickness though
Iirc
acrylic crystals are more than fine for dress watches
$13000 dollar Cartier Tanks use acrylic crystal
very un tank of them!!
genuine question from an uninformed person on this front, why are watches not using something like gorilla glass
Sapphire is tougher, and a lot.more scratch resistant, but more expensive
there are some phones using sapphire glass but it adds a lot to the cost that most people wont need

Talking Watches With Ed Sheeran, Hosted By John Mayer
Though he's only recently been lionized as a major collector and watch enthusiast on social media, Ed Sheeran has been a passionate collector for over a decade. I've had the pleasure of getting to know him over the years, both through our shared love of writing music and for collecting, and I'm so glad he agreed to sit down with me for an episod...
Actually a really fun watch and insight into a world 99.99999% of us will never see
John Mayer has an impressive watch and Visvim collection but he's such a shitter so I can't bring myself to watch this
there is no way he's worse than Ed Sheeran, maker of the worlds most cringe and insipid tunes
despite his music he’s a charismatic enough guy surprisingly
I refuse to stop being a hater
i dont really listen to his music much but he is great songwriter. music can be gatekeepy sometimes, and dissing popular artists is the cool thing to do.
cringe is pretty different than definitely being abusive toward women
he's got such a long trail of people who said he was dogshit
notably Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift who both indicated he was abusive
that plus his pretty-much-irredeemable interviews in the 2010s
where he used the N word and said he had a white supremacist dick
like much cocaine and booze isn't the same thing as a mea culpa
wait is this Ed Sheeran? I'm European, we don't know that other guy
i can’t tell if this is bait or not
I'm genuinely not joking, I've never heard of John Mayer
That's pretty wild ngl
I'm assuming he's super well known in the US?
I assume globally, he's been quite a big star for a long while now!
Didn't know about this though which is a shame cause I genuinely liked the dude plus the vis and watch collection is just 👌🏽
I guarantee you he is well known in europe lol
are you under 25?
not in the UK, apparently only had 2 songs in 20 years in the top 10 charts?
far older
oh, sorry, in the top100
I'm not going mad, there's even someone on his reddit from the UK talking about it https://www.reddit.com/r/JohnMayer/comments/irkiwv/john_in_the_uk/
I dont think its hard to understand why hes not more popular, even as a devout fan, alot of his stuff is incredibly corny
okay it might be thisI think viewing this as anything other than a regional niche is a surprise
Oh, I'm sure he's really well known loads of places, but just not here
being like "I'm brit and therefore the corniness is why people don't know him" and talking about ed sheerhan being also corny is like ???
idk
anyways it's surprising you don't know him
I mean there's loads of massive EU bands the average American has never heard of
but he's an actual shit guy
so now you know
edit: damnit I wanted the more you know rainbow star -- thank u
yeah he sounds fucking terrible
Man I watched some interviews and stuff too where he felt genuinely apologetic for stuff he's done in the past, and I always just thought it was general superstar nonsense, but that's a bit much lol
I mean that white supremacist line alone, fuck me sideways
yeah the more you hear details about it the more it's like
What was man thinking
love a domed acrylic crystal
my marlin has a nice dome
love it
you can get domed sapphire too. kind of hard to see but this was a domed saphhire swap i did on my skx
gorgeous
Love the domed crystal though
brothers! hand-me-down from my grandpapi. replaced the strap and found a rolex buckle for 20usd somehow 🤣
Is that a datejust with a different bezel?
yep! not the thunderbird tho
Interesting! Is it stock or did you mod it?
i believe it’s stock. my watch friend said it’s the turn-o-graph 16253 ☺️
yours looks so clean (and v v shiny). how do you wear yours with the two tone bracelet?
this makes me hate the cyclops bezel size
so thats what that dimple is called! haha. i dont mind it but it does scream hand me down from grandpapi watch
Cyclopses are a blight
That watch is lovely
thank u ☺️
You remove if you want, it's p ez afaik
if it wasn’t a hand me down from my late grandpa i would. i had this serviced a month ago actually and made sure they wouldnt polish it. man that costed a pretty penny tho lol
understandable

some of the more original designs from China are getting nice
it's definitely got some Doxa in it but still
Anyone know how much I should expect to pay to get a standard ETA serviced these days? I have a Doxa that isn’t running at the moment
that's gonna depend on where in the world you are
These days, I think it's around $350
Canada
just got this serviced + crystal replacement 🥲
Which do you prefer?
I'm not a big fan of paper dials so probably the former. (This is just my subjective opinion, so if possible, it's probably best to see the watch in person before buying it.)
They’re both JDM models sadly, and I’m in the US
I am drawn to the paper actually but I’ve never held one
Very tempting
I always loved the concept of the Piaget Really Way Too Thin
@zacheadams it’s the best value I’ve seen for a thin platinum dress watch
idk if there's a such thing as value in platinum dress watches but I do love it
I see a lot of nice Seiko on eBay as second hand but they seem quite cheap... Is there a big fake market for Seiko?
Also, could you wear a metal band watch with a suit?
Yup. A lot of the watches you see on eBay are either knockoffs or frankenwatches.
Depending on the setting and the type of people present, I think you can get away with a watch with a metal bracelet. If I were you, I would probably keep it simple with a three-hander and not a diver or chronograph.
Lot of ones fixed with cheap parts, particularly from India
Wow, I didn't know it was that bad. Guess I'll never get one second hand
Not from ebay at least. Lots of good places to get secondhand seikos elsewhere.
Nomos mailing list has decided that to wear a gold watch, it would behoove you to learn German
Probably has been asked 1000 times already but I couldn’t find anything based on a quick search, but how would I figure out if a watch is too small or too big. I have smallish wrists and have been interested in woman watches since they’re cheaper and smaller but I don’t know how any of that sizing stuff works. Any resources that y’all recommend I look at when it comes to sizing?
buying a metal strap with links is a safe bet in terms of sizing, because you can always remove some links at home or go to a watch repair shop had have them size it for you.
Thank you! I probably should have mentioned that I was speaking about watch faces. My bad I’m new to watches!
ohh gotcha! i am a very casual watch enjoyer lol. I think they’re usually sized in mm’s, you could measure the ones you’re considering against a watch you already have and see how the face size would compare?
Oooh don’t know why I didn’t think of that. The small casio@watches fit my wrist pretty well so I might just find something that the same size-ish
Ben's Watch Club
How Should A Watch Fit? A Watch Guide For Beginners — Ben's Watch C...
A watch should fit tightly enough to prevent the watch sliding around on the wrist during movement, yet loose enough so it doesn’t leave any notable imprints.
as ever it's gonna be based heavily on your own preferences
the overall vibes right now are that it seems like watches have been too big for too long, so the standard is probably shrinking in the last 5 years
No yeah that’s fair! When I was searching in this discord I saw stuff saying that the typical size depends on the fashion at the time.
The other thing to keep in mind is the lugs, the parts that attach the case to the strap. Longer lugs also contribute to how “big” the watch feels/looks.

This is a pretty gimmicky infographic from a questionable website but it kinda shows what I mean.

Title: Wrist-Guide: NOMOS Metro date power reserve for small wrists
Found on Google from nomoswatchclub.com
I will say lug to lug is way more important imo than watch diameter
My SKX is a beefy 42mm but because it’s a short lug to lug it’s still just as wearable as my 34mm Marlin
Oh okay thanks y’all for that that makes a lot of sense
Definitely true, case diameter doesnt tell the whole story at all.
Also worth noting that visually, lighter and more minimal dials will tend to look bigger.
My best advice, but also very basic, would be to try a bunch of watches, write down their diameters and take some pictures with them on your wrist.
So you can compare the pictures later and let you decide with a clear view of the range of diameters and thickness of the models you tried
I wanted a smaller casio but is this too small
yea i may return this
I personally think you can get away with having a smaller digital watch more than you could with other watches. I think it looks fine
smaller dress watches look great
Agree. Small cartier is very iconic.
yea, smaller watches do look good. just that this watch in particular looks like a childs toy from a vending machine when its that small
My Bulova Parking Meter finally arrived today!
Thats sexy
Been thinking a lot about the watch for a few months. Pretty happy with the purchase now that it's come in - feels nice to wear and I really like the design.
Watch is big but I'm also a big fella (7.8 inch wrist) so it works out.

Got to hang out for a bit in the MB&F store in Paris too, it's so full of neat stuff that isn't even watches
Can anyone recommend a good watch repair shop in Boston. Asking for a friend
I'd probably just google maps this and pick a place with 4.5+ stars that's accessible to you
I think there are a bunch of shops in the boston area
Oh I'm actually asking for a friend, she says she's having trouble finding a good place
The place with the highest reviews apparently doesn't service seikos, which I consider a red flag
fwiw I wonder if she's running into/will run into issues with people not wanting to put in hundreds of bucks of work on a watch worth that or less
(unless we're talking a special vintage or grand/king/premier seiko)
my next move would then be to call the top 5 rated places and see if they service seikos and ask what their costs are
a full service is probably expensive no matter the watch
Ok I hadn't considered that perspective about why they'd not want to with with seikos, there might be more to the story than the reviews mentioned.
She actually doesn't have a seiko, that was just a weird thing we noticed in the reviews. Basically she has a vintage tiffany quartz watch that's stopped and probably needs a new movement, she's expecting to pay a few hundred. I understand if this thread isn't the right place to ask for these kinds of recs.
this is most likely the case. nobody honest and worth their salt is going to agree to do a few hundred dollars worth of work on a watch that can be easily replaced for the same price or less. you could even pick up a whole new movement and replace it yourself for under $50. of course the exception would be a higher end seiko (GS/KS as mentioned) but i dont think not servicing seikos should be a deterrent if its a decent shop with good reviews.
for this situation i'd maybe look for reviews from others who have had vintage pieces restored/repaired
These days, Seiko doesn't even offer a long term supply for spare parts and frequently only sells whole movements to independent watchmakers.
If it's an actual Tiffany & Co. (not to be confused with Tiffany) quartz watch, there's probably an ETA movement. Many old quartz movements were designed to be serviced and run fine when cleaned and lubricated (if there's no water ingress or battery corrosion).
if you know what the movement is then you can seek out buying one online and asking a shop to replace it, many shops will probably also willingly source/swap non-standard movements - it might be worth telling the whole story to the shops including the budget
At the risk of sounding condescending, has your friend verified that a battery swap didn’t bring the watch back to life?
And does she need to be in Boston proper or is she willing to travel to suburbs?
Hi everyone, I didn't tell the full story at first because it was kind of complicated and I didn't think it would be necessary for asking for a quick recommendation. She did already swap out the battery and service the movement and that didn't resolve the issue. She then went to the highest rated watch repair person in Boston and he told her that it's impossible to replace the movement because they don't make one small enough anymore. But we know that's not true because we found a retail-facing website that sells the movement we need. (This is the guy who doesn't service seikos, I mentioned this because I thought it was weird and it was faster than telling the whole story) We did discuss buying the movement and asking someone to replace it but hadn't reached that point yet.
She ended up going back to her local bench jeweler after I originally posted and he's currently trying to find a b2b repair shop. I think we're ok for now, but thanks everyone for your recommendations.
interesting, well good luck to her
that's all very odd
I’m soooo sorry to be the guy that said this but this VC is DEFINITELY not genuine
it’s an okay rep though!
He ended up not buying it but this photo was taken at the VC boutique on Bond street.
You should let them know they're selling reps.
(in the end he got a fifty fathoms which suits him better anyway)
bond street in which nation?
makes a little more sense- clearly a display piece than
essentially every ad will put display pieces with no movement in shelves for customers to try on, hence why the complications are are aligned straight and not at different points. this doesn’t TOTALLY make sense though since they are typically factory set at 10 and 2
it’s a veryyy weird way to act though to say your friend bought a watch and send a picture of a vc and then only when brought up say he actually never bought it
i’m sorry he also went from buying a $60,000 watch to a $9,000 blancpain?
Why is this so surprising/unusual? Deciding to buy something less expensive after considering something more expensive sounds within the range of normal to me.
London, presumably
also this is strange to me and I have never encountered such a thing before
I was in the MB&F store in Paris and they absolutely let you take stuff down from the shelf, clearly in good working condition with price tags, and try it on
they let me handle a $40k and $400k watch no problem
and it's not like I'm walking around with an MB&F already on
I think this could go both ways. Yes, kind of suspect to say the dude bought it if he knew the whole story at the time. But could be the guy just sent a pic from ad with no context. If a friend sent me a pic wearing a VC I'd assume he bought it (unless I knew he obviously didn't have the means to do so). And if there's a community that I'm a part of that can appreciate the watch, why not share?
I had a friend who sent me a pic while he test drove a Porsche and then he ended up buying an Alfa instead but didn't say anything about it until weeks later. Knew he was in the market for a new car and I just assumed for the whole time that he was in a new 911
Went from thinking he had a 220k+ car to finding out he bought a 50k car instead. Still a good car, but not a 911. Blancpains are still great watches
London
I think you're overthinking it, honestly.
At the time he sent the pic he was thinking about a few watches, this was the most expensive of them.
I was actually with him, watch shopping in Marseilles during the world cup, when he tried on a 50f and loved, had previously assumed it would be too big for him.
Leather band and dark face watch would fit best with an Americana style yeah? Like this.
that watch gets a resounding Hell Yeah from me

if I found out I had a luftwaffe watch I would not treat it as a "family heirloom"
I'd probably get it to a museum and fuck off from it
there's so much romanticism in the comments (and society) about good ol german shit
if you found confederate shit you'd want to fuckin donate it to a museum too
There are a lot of weirdos (nazis or nazi adjacents) who love to pretend that the luftwaffe was somehow more honorable than the rest of the nazis and should be treated with some higher level of respect
Ive seen a lot of weird romanticism around the luftwaffe in particular
cool piece of history but ya that’s goin on ebay or something at the least if not to a museum like u said zache
Id even not want to put it on ebay cause some wehraboo is gonna buy it

My WW1 watch finally rolled in from the shop
Need better strap options for tiny fixed lugs though
bundts are definitely polarising. Whats the lug width?
A miniscule 10 mm
good lord
What does that thing look like on the wrist? I feel like the bund strap would work better with a trench watch than a more modern field or pilot watch
Surprisingly not bad on the wrist, I quite like it! The bund strap is meh though
Do you not like the style, or do you not like this specific one?
This specific one isn't great haha, the fit on the case is a bit awkward, and it sits on the wrist weird
I found a few sellers by searching for "trench watch band". I haven't ordered from them personally but I'll link a couple that seem like they might work for this watch.

I’m a big fan of Casio’s vintage designs. I wore a Casio Calculator Watch throughout university and now wear a A100 style watch at work
I got the idea after learning that Ripley wore a modified version in Alien
retrofuturist watches are great
However I do contemplate trying something different like a smartwatch or a small watch
Maybe a Citizen BM8180?
I have an A100 and it is no joke my only watch that anyone IRL has even commented on literally ever.
It’s pretty neat, I’ve gotten some comments as well
Does buckle position matter with watches or is that just always going to be down to wrist size? I have skinny wrists and this watch is a bit too big for me lug-wise, but just curious about it now that I’m getting more into wearing one on the daily
Doesn't really matter, unless it bugs you
Sweet, thank you. No, no bugging - just didn’t want it to look like an obvious faux pas that I was unaware of!
No worries at all, I've had a strap literally attached upside down for months before and nobody commented!
My wrists are so small lmao. I dropped down to a 36mm field but failed to account for the lug height which is right at the edge of my wrists.
I’m going to rock it though, who cares 😂
Sanity check: does the fake croc strap work with this watch? I wanted something aggressively 1982. Having second thoughts since the strap is even more obviously fake than I expected.
Looks fantastic, brown leather + gold watch is classic.
Also nobody will be closely inspecting your strap, have o fear
Got my first watches. I couldn’t decide between them, so I got them both lol. I feel like I don’t ever see people wearing the black/gold combo, but for some reason I was liking it a lot
these are awesome, Seikos rule
Yeah they’re vintage ones from like the 70/80s. Idk why I didn’t just get a silver or a pure gold one as my first watch, but I just liked those ones a lot
Vintage quartz watches are delightful and great value
I really want a seiko grand quartz but I should sell some other watches first
Are quartz watches not as valuable as automatics or mechanicals? My dad’s a watch guy and he told me that, but I was just wondering if there’s any other differences in functionality besides the value from the more intensive labor needed for automatics and mechanicals
In general:
- Quartz movements are less expensive to produce
- quartz movements are more accurate
From a cost/function standpoint, it’s not even close.
But mechanical watchers sure are neat
Ahh, I thought it was the other way around for some reason. Like mechanical watches were more accurate because of how expensive they are to make lol
nope
I love the dials on the 70's 80's grand quartzes. It's also awesome because some of them go for double and low triple digits.
Anything with a snowflake dial is super inflated though
Watch collectors are strange (like most collectors), and tend to prefer mechanical watches, so the prices inflate more.
While generally true nowadays, a lot of high end vintage quartz watches were incredibly expensive at the time they were produced.
A modern Rolex will be +/- 2 seconds a day.
A modern high end quartz will be +/- 5 seconds per year.
Not taking into account radio/gps models that always have the correct time.
The variance seems a lot greater for modern mechs. Bad quartz are as good as good mech and cost of repairing mech is way higher.
Servicing a Rolex every 3-7 years to maintain that accuracy is a chore.
I have a mech that I've had to have serviced twice in 13 years and it's also frustrating and cost nearly a grand, plus a few months, every time I've had that done.
The one argument that I've heard for why folks like mechanical/automatic watches is that they involve a lot more of the watchmaking craft (lots of very tiny intricate pieces) where are quartz are a bit more "look what we can do with integrated circuits". If that's something that appeals to you, then go for it. For the most part watches are entirely an aesthetic choice rather than being practical (I rarely am in a situation where I don't have good cell service, and can get time from there). FWIW, I like the precision of quartz watches.
Thats definitely how mechanical watches are marketed as well. If I hear one more dingdong tell me mechanical watches have a 'soul' I will beat them to death with a Gshock
was that just normal wear or do you do stuff with your watches that cause more wear and tear than the average person? i have a rolex from 2008 that has never been serviced and it still keeps time within 3sec/day. same with my omega, though thats from 2018. i feel like the manufacturer's suggested service schedules are just a scam
Its normal to get a service every 5 years or so for an expensive watch. Waiting for something to go wrong means the service could be a lot more expensive
tbf my chinese 62mas runs at +20 a day and I dont care that much, looks rad
normal wear - my watch is definitely fairly niche here and I wish I had an easy way to measure its accuracy/deviance (I have a tool to do it but it doesn't work anymore)
fair, and i get the preventive maintenance aspect of it. but at $800-$1000 every 5 years vs maybe $1500-$2000 to do a more intensive servicing at the 15-20 year mark when something actually breaks, i'll take my chances
of course now that ive said that, both of my watches are going to explode in the next couple of weeks and i'll be wearing my gshock for the next 6-12 months
fwiw both times were complete rebuilds
looks like I spent an average of $800 on them each
and some googling has informed me that I no longer need specialized equiment to test accuracy, internal microphones on phones are sufficient now!
:rafprayer:
nice! i was gonna say, they do have apps to help test too if you don't have access to a tool or local watch repair shop
This is one of my favourites. Not too sure on age, but runs well after a service and cleaning and I'd replaced the rotor
If you have the serial number you might be able to determine age based on that. It looks like Tradition watches were sold by Sears, and a lot of the movements were made by A Schild, which was associated with Eterna at the time. Since this wasn't marketed by the manufacturer it'll be a bit harder to find the right references though.
It is an a schild movement, but not a sears tradition. This tradition was a mid tier/budget brand seems to have been fairly short lived. Can't remember the movement reference (haven't had it open since servicing couple years ago), but I think it was something used widely until about 72
Got it, sorry for explaining how to do something you already tried to do 😬😬😬. It's a gorgeous watch
Ha, no,thanks for the help. Had a look at info I had on it, was a felsa 4000n movement, brand was made by reusser

Paging some watch folks
@Commie Garcon
he’s asking 245 for the solid sterling Vulcain
What we thinking of that
I can't say as to what prices are like for that watch in particular, but of the two I like it way more
given its made out of solid silver that certainly seems not out there price wise
Yah i’m not super up on vintage watch pricing but i do know this seller and he prices things very fairly usually.
Fwiw i also like that vulcan alot
$245 seems pretty fair too me you could always shoot a counter offer
I think that's a good price. Checking for comps on eBay I see most steel Vulcains from the 60's sell for 100-150, and the more unique ones get into the 2-400 range.
Silver watches in general aren't as common so there'll be a surcharge for rarity
Thanks guys
I found this old piece that my family inherited from an adoptive grandfather. Worth wearing?
Absolutely! I love these vintage omegas regardless of origin, but seeing as it’s from your grandfather then it has a great connection too. The all gold aesthetic is fun to play with too.
Not sure how much you know about vintage manual/automatic watches as I haven’t read most of this thread but if you need any tips let me know, have had a few of these older omegas over the years.
I managed to wind it up and set it correctly with a quick Google search
I think gold is good for my wardrobe too so I'll def try and rock
Nice, excited to see some shots with it!
That’s all you really need. Little general rule with some vintage watches is don’t quick change the date if the time is between like 10pm and 2am as it can sometimes hurt the movement. I always just stick to that rule with all of them as it’s movement specific and easy to do. Just change the time a bit first.
Also if the crystal on top is scratched up, google polywatch and you can find vids on YouTube of how to use it. It’s cheap and easy and makes the crystal look brand new.
Unfortunately I did 😦
But I'll make sure not to in the future
Ha all good, I’ve done it too. If it’s still ticking you should be chill and that’s how you learn anyway.
Also, even if the watch claims water resistance, do NOT get a vintage watch in a sink/pool/shower etc
unless it's like, a vintage Gshock or something
This is awesome!
Fyi you should get this serviced before wearing it. If it's been sitting in a drawer for a long time it'll need to be relubricated, otherwise the movement will wear down way faster.
Gotcha, I'm already on speed dial with my watchmaker friend so I'll have it looked at ASAP
Perfect, just wanna make sure this sticks around for the next generation
It's a gorgeous watch, do you know how old it is? If not you can also ask them to mark down the serial number when they service it
No information on the back so I'll ask them to

The lion's mane pattern of the dial is something that you have to see to truly appreciate.
Besides the dial layout, I just don't like how thick spring drive sport watches are
too many functions
Like every GS GMT I like is automatic because the spring drive version is too chunky
you can solve some of the chunkyness by removing functions too

how do you tell the time on that?
it depends on the model. On this one, it's the little indicator at 12 oclock. So these are all showing 09:56
This one is 11:30:54
this one is 3:15 (the innermost dial is seconds, then minutes, then hours)

How is the durability of the automatic seiko? I got an automatic watch when I was 14 or so and it always broke when i went cycling (not mountainbiking but city-cycling mind you) and went over some bumps. Kinda made me sceptical of automatic watches.
Currently looking for a watch bc looking at these during a presentation/tour is just way more socially acceptable than pulling out your phone.
That being said I will propably have to go to a watch store before I buy anything just to get a better feel of what style of watch works for my wrist.
These watches have no buisness being that beautiful given how goddang expensive they are
They're about as sturdy as a mechanical watch can be, which is never super sturdy in the grand scheme of things. Should be able to handle casual exercise, but really, quartz watches are hands down better at taking abuse, less moving parts.
That’s interesting because I had several automatics that survive city biking just fine
But I agree that if you find a watch you really like the look of that is quartz, just get it
I love my automatic watches but it’s so much nicer to just grab a quartz one out of the case and go rather than sit and set the time and date
I do think that biking with my watch hurt its movement, leading for me to need to service it earlier
so I don't bike with it anymore since it's so fucking expensive to service
What is even the advantage of mechanical over quarz?
There is none
But mechanicals are neat
Ahh. I understand.
From an aesthetic point there's a couple things
1. Mechanical watches go tick multiple times a second so it looks like a smooth sweep.
2. Some mechanical watches let you see the movement either throught the caseback or front and it looks cool.
Also if you're looking at vintage watches from before the mid-70's mechanicals are either your only or primary option.
Some people will make the argument that mechanicals can always be repaired but quartzes will break down faster, that's misleading at best
1a. There are some quartz watches that sweep but they're relatively uncommon
Cool idea for a strap for a fixed lug
My watch strap ;-;
So, in 2019 I bought a vintage Soviet Raketa and in 2020, I cracked the plastic crystal and while working in a hot-ass no-AC building, I noticed steam build up on the inside, and and hour or two later, that it had completely stopped working.
It would wind, but it wouldn't tick
To this day the clockspring is wound tight
Anyone want to hazard any guesses what happened to make it stop?
It had been serviced before being put up for sale but I think it's sat so long I'd probably have to have it serviced and IDEK how much that would cost for a watch like a Raketa
Mine took $75 like 5 years ago
One thing you could consider is swapping the Raketa movement with an easier to service modern one, especially if you only care about the look of the watch face and not the guts inside
I may consider that, because while a mech movement is cool and all, I have been working jobs where there's a lot of "shock" that would fuck w/ a mech movement
So an easier to service automatic or even a high-quality quartz would be an improvement
I'll still look into getting the OG movement serviced and the crystal replaced so it doesn't happen again and have it be an after-hours watch
honestly in that sort of environment get a gshock or a promaster as a beater

You know what watch I’ve always wanted? The one with the Mickey Mouse hands 😅
Is it okay to ask some watch related noob questions here or should I make a thread in #questions-and-advice ?
Asking here is probably fine
So I have found these two watches between which I am trying to decide. Im not a watch guy so I went to vinted and looked for ones that look relatively simple, have a quartz movement and don't cost too much.
Im really only looking for a watch bc I sometimes have to give guided tours at work and looking at a mobile phone to check where I am timewhise feels rude. I think both watches would be appropriate for that.
I think aesthetically I like the citizen a bit more bc I have big hands and wrists and it looks a bit chunkier, which will propably feel more coherent. Though the seller says the battery is empty and would need to be exchanged. In your experience, how high is the chance the watch is outright broken instead? The other issue is the strap of the citizen. The skagen strap looks like it can be easily adjusted/replaced but what about the citizen, bc I am not 100% sure it will fit me. Can these more chunky waistband be exchanged or adjusted?
Price point is 30 for the citizen and 20 for the skagen, bc german vinted as bad as it is can be really quite fun sometimes
No way to tell if it’s broken or just out of batteries afaik. I’d probably trust the seller though. Hopefully there’s some buyer protection if it really turns out not to work at all.
You will be able to add or remove links from the citizen bracelet. Biggest problem would be if it’s too small and the seller has no extra links. If it’s too big, you can either adjust it yourself with a little screwdriver or ask a watch shop to help with that (like wherever you go to get the new battery). Probably best to get an approximate wrist size from the seller and compare to your measurement.
Worst comes to worst you can likely remove the bracelet and get a strap instead. Finding a new steel bracelet that works well will probably be challenging.
cosign all of this
Allright!
Gotta measure my wrist then.
But the citizen feels more in my lane
I like that name
Citizen
Has something egalitarian about it
Its probably the better watch from a construction standpoint too if I had to guess. If that matters
I mean I am not a construction nerd, but I would like my watch to last for a while and not constantly break.
Should be fine but I don't expect anything from watches at that price point if I'm being honest
Just bought my first watch at 15 for £20 on amazon I think it could be better buts its simple and affordable and I like the design and its stylish too I think gon try and get a bigger one/newer one when I get more money as I just sell drinks at school rn
I think it's cool! What kind of bigger/newer are you thinking?
Thank you! I like it for the 2000s look Im thinking a bigger/waterproof version
I like it
Thanks
went with a friend to the Omega store today for him to try on a SMP and a Bond watch 🥲
I'm like pls sir do not get a fucking Bond watch I think u will regret
Tbh I find watches in general so challenging in a fashion context. So many fits are worse with watches and so many watches are borderline impossible to style well imo
I try to just think of it wholly separately
like watches are a completely separate hobby since it's such a small piece of jewelry
yeah I agree with this. but like i need to wear clothes, so if i want to wear a watch I want it to work haha
Watch has been purchased. Lets hope it is a decent one.
The solution is to have more than one style of watch
And simple metal watches go with almost anything imo
You can have multiple straps too, but you can have one watch do it all ez
I wear my g shock with pretty much everything except formal wear
Babys first watch finally in operation
Gorgeous
My wife started a new music therapy job, and I got her the Seiko metronome watch to celebrate. It's very neat.

Time for an update on the watch market and punching a whole in that whole "investment" thing.

bluntly, did we really need a market/watch guy to tell us that? luxury goods are not sound investments (and never have been)
Based on how many Youtuber's took sponsorships from Masterworks... I'd say it sadly is needed.
Invested in some urushi stonks 📈
Gonna have to retake this with better light lol.
Dial is beautiful but can we get some applause for the case shape
Those lugs are so nice @jjaazzee
It makes me happy to put it on every morning. People talked mad shit about the movement not being great, but the case design and dial are just beautifully understated.
as a movement nerd myself, your happiness when you put it on every morning is way more important
Youd be surprised just how much conversation about watches is as 'stores of value', it sucks.
so clean :hellyeah:
Capitalist brainrot
yyyup
almost as bad is the obsession over stats in watches, vs just buying something you like the look of
Yeah, but that would require developing an aesthetic taste.
6 months in and I still love this.
So much "quality in clothing" discourse is just men trying to not engage with aesthetics.
Ohh, its very nice
Feels a bit like a compass??
Like from the look
Seiko not making one for under 3k with the smaller dimensions made buying the homage an easy choice!
yeah for sure. It's based on Seikos first dive watch from 1962, I love the more vintage styles
(I've been a card carrying watch [multiple] forums member for 16 years, I will not be surprised)
The only thing I don't like, I think maybe, is the name because it sounds like cistern. Maybe that's not a bad thing and it's just an odd thing 😂
Well now I cant unsee that (It's german for Starfish, one of the less weird Chinese brand names tbh)
TIL you can buy a Patek on walmart.com: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Patek-Philippe-Calatrava-2557-18K-Yellow-Gold-Manual-33mm-Vintage-Wrist-Watch/651027924

Not usually a NATO fan, but I like this strap on my Oceanus
Oceanus definitely high on my list of watches I really want
this one in particular
I want to collect odd watches, skeleton watches, Nike Triox, chronograph, watches with weird shapes.
Highly recommend it. They're an incredible value as long as you're good with quartz
already have a seiko SBTM solar/radio quartz which I love. Heard the quality on these is a step beyond though

I've gotta get some of the links removed / I don't have a screwdriver small enough, but my new bracelet is in
seems good for the summer since my sweat is destroying my leather strap
I forget that bracelets tear out hair 😭
I wanted an OEM bracelet but this price made me fucking faint
it's a fucking steel bracelet, $2k is an absolute racket
the aftermarket one above was $100
2k is insane for that wow
I did the same thing as you looking for a leather band for my hermes d’arceau….$800 from hermes….I went with one from aliexpress :keepincool:
yeah the leather strap replacement was like $1.5k so I went with one from Jones in Tokyo
every couple of years I get one from them, usually horween shell cordovan
but if I stick with the bracelet I guess I won't need to
FWIW I remember one of my bracelets grabbing hair at first, but it got much better with time
figures
yeah at first i was not about the bracelet but i got used to it quickly and it no longer bothers me

Very old grandpa's soviet-era watch
I hadn’t worn this serica tuxedo dial in a good long while and now I don’t want to take it off anymore. It’s just so good
recently been interested in getting my hands on a casio databank or a100/f100; would ebay be a decent place to get those? no experience buying watches online before so any help would be really helpful
amazon honestly
latest obsession
Its like a bunch of the neat designs of Seiko but without the one stupid thing they normally have
gonna buy the lorier astra when they restock
dam how much is it looks beautiful
Thats the other watch I really love!
500 - 600 usd iirc
But have to wait for restocks, its a Traska Venturer
good price
i love that it looks like a breitlinf transocean
Got a Casio A700 - I wanted a metal band watch and was looking at analogs but I really dug the styling of this. I know that digital watches aren’t technically dress watches but this feels dressy as hell regardless and I don’t mind wearing digital with a dressier outfit.
Really light on the wrist too, only 6mm thick
I’m interested in also getting an A168 and probably will at some point
Oh that’s actually sweet asf
This is the vintage series model ya?
Yup! It normally retails for $59 USD but I got it on sale for $50 plus tax
They have a gold color version and also sell both with a Milanese band if that’s your style
I think I might impulse buy rn lol
Casio Men's Vintage A168WA-1 Electro Luminescence Watch
Look no further if you are looking for a silver toned watch that can be both durable and stylish, the CASIO A168W-1 might just be what you're looking for. The A168W-1 is a silver toned digital watch that encompasses everything you need. With a stainless steel band and a stainless steel watch face...
The 168 is on sale on Amazon rn so I just impulse bought that one too lol
orients are nice
i'd always been tempted to pick up a orient bambino
This one popped up on local fb marketplace
$100
Couldn’t resist
Haven't worn a watch in forever but feel like it tonight. Here's my old vintage Tag. I miss smaller watches like this.
thats one grail watch down
Also other watches I saw recently

Buddy’s Santos
holy fuckamoli
I’m good for a few years easily, this has been on the grail list for 5+ years

this beauty caught my eye online. i didn’t buy it (yet) but id love a Swatch in my collection https://www.swatch.com/en-us/sunbaked-sandstone-syxm100/SYXM100.html
Anybody try the CMF Watch Pro 2 yet? Looks like it could be a decent affordable smart watch?
Or would the Apple Watch SE be an easier option?
I’ve had this Cartier Basculante 2390 for a while. It’s an impractical scratch magnet that hardly ever fits my outfits, but it flips (!!!) so I love it.
Basculante is the IYKYK Reverso, love it
Wouldn’t mind having a Reverso as well…
new watch arrived, its lovely
I've been too lazy to fit the bracelet but looks nice on sailcloth!
My father gave me his Casio W-800H a few days ago and I can't get enough of it.
I never take it off.
Newest watch in the collection: 33mm Hamilton khaki quartz
Hard to see in the pic but it has a domed crystal
Is this the one they just released? Looks great
Hamilton makes a nice watch. I have a viewmatic. Kind of interested in their aviation watches.
Nice design, little big for my taste at 42mm
I’m a big timex enjoyer. something that you can wear daily and not worry about bashing off something
Classic Casio - I have a 168 coming in the mail this week that I’m pumped for
They don’t make this one anymore (or well they have a different model with the same name)
I like the leather straps but I might order a nato strap as I think this would look nice with green as a field watch
I’d love to get an automatic but I’m not sure I can stomach paying $150-$200 every 5 years for servicing
well apparently this is in an archived channel so resharing for posterity, here's pics of my factory tour @ Glashutte Original
https://imgur.com/a/4SGgg
and a pretty pic of my watch, just after a service
I've had it serviced twice and it's now on a ~$100 non-OEM metal bracelet because I was tired of replacing the strap for a nice Horween one from JonesInTokyo every few years for ~$100
and the OEM bracelet would have been ~$2000 :stfu:
I ended up paying $700-900 for service on average every 6 years and that's just fucking stupid
(obv the watch is more expensive but still I don't think it should just stop working or need that much service that frequently for that much)
they do take it back in Germany for a complete rebuild
but it's still stupid to me, financially speaking
OOF
obviously no watch should ever be an "investment", but it's my only watch and I am just salty about the cost of ownership, particularly given the cost to purchase etc etc
thats valid though
If i could learn to do the servicing myself I’d be more inclined to get a mechanical watch - though I wouldn’t get something super expensive, I’d opt for say the Timex marlin reissue, or something more in that price range

there are kits that teach you how to assemble the movements
If I wanted to look into that what would i search for online?
the ones I've seen (online, not IRL) are the NH-36 movement kits
the amount of parts you can swap on a Seiko 5 is pretty ridiculous though, like you can get aftermarket hands, dials, crystals, etc. to totally customize to your heart's content with a pretty robust and inexpensive watch movement (and case) as the base
Oo thank you!
I could quite fancy a watch with a nato strap
Quartz watches are honestly better for almost all circumstances (solar ones even moreso), and I say this as someone with automatic and quartz watches
For real, like I feel a little weird I fell down a watch rabbit hole and can appreciate a mechanical/automatic piece but it just doesn’t make sense for me but feels like more of the watch community is mechanical or bust and there’s a lot of watch snobbery
But then Again I know people IRL who have said “I enjoy this stupid, dumb, and expensive hobby”
The 'watch community' are honestly some of the most annoying people I've met, especially online. The best are definitely the folks who know it's all a bit silly.
this is why in part it's kinda fun to get into the mechanics of the cheaper automatics

Man imma be real with you
$55 is nothing for a watch
Also that model casio is so highly regarded I think it’s a regret free purchase if you really like it and can afford $55
Ah fuck -digs out wallet-
Oh shoot I had rewards points
I got that and a nato strap in black and yellow for less than $35
neat

Yeah Duros kick ass. Absolute tank of a thing as well, can take a real beating.

Yeah okay this was worth it
I can’t tell if it’s a little big for my wrist or I’m just not used to wearing a big watch? Either way I’m loving the look and physical feel of it

Amazon, its was less than $10 USD. Just searched around till I found one that had colors that matched the black gold and silver colors of the watch

watchdives Nylon Watch Band 20mm 22mm Multicolor Replacement Watch Straps for Men Women (A25 Black Yellow Gray, 22mm)
Nice thanks!
I think it fits but it's a bit hard to tell from this angle. When you look at it straight on the lugs shouldn't extend past your wristbone
Dive watches are usually bigger since they're meant to be easy to see underwater
When I look at it in person the lugs don’t extend but for whatever reason I can’t get an angle on the phone that shows that.
Looking at it in the mirror from 6 feet away it looks pretty normal too like no question.
That was what I figured, it seems like you're good
The focal length on phone cameras gives misleading pictures for sure
that's why you go old school manual wind :2EZ: sbgw series are much thinner
the new hand wind spring drive is plenty slim as well
Unfortunately slimness in movement design usually requires it to be thought of from the ground up
Since the easiest way to add complication or features to a movement is to just slap a module on top of it
Imo a dress watch isn’t really one unless it’s thin enough to easily slip under a cuff
Habring released two new watches 🤤
The moonphase also comes in a blue dial and a simpler white dial with no pointer date
True but Seikos dress watches are generally slim enough for that
this comment is ringing through my head as I see videos on solar G Shocks lol
literally the most practical watch
Im not helping
Stupid question, is it possible to have a mechanical raketa replaced with a quartz movement for not-absurd prices?
Depending where you go it'll probably be under $200
If the watch has complications it might be more
The only thing wrong with it is the movement. I’m pretty sure steam getting in through a cracked crystal evaporated all the oil
Wound tight and won’t tick.
Basically I just want the dial and hands transplanted to an automatic/quartz movement instead of a mechanical one
Complications means things like a moonphase, gmt hand, chronograph, etc. If it has one of those then you might need a specific movement which would increase the cost. Technically a date wheel is a complication but it's common enough that it shouldn't affect the cost
Oh nah it's just a s/m/h watch
No date wheel or anything fancy
Honestly the only downside to the OG movement is that it's mechanical and that doesn't fare well in environments like the one I work in.
If I had a desk job I'd just get it serviced and the crystal replaced
Todd Snyder is trying to lure me in
Thats a nice looking watch
cuervo y sobrinos historiador that came with that nice humidor
That dial looks amazing
this is what i wear daily, its a bit different: Seiko alba AKA from the late 90's/early 2000's. jdm quartz. its a cheap watch but has a lot of fun gimmicks in the styling
That whips, 90s/2000s had so much creativity
This has been on my buy list for a while. Finally got it and I love the subtle green dial
1990s citizen
i love it
its completely broken, scratched, repolished until serial numbers arent visible anymore, re gilded and completely worthless, barely runs, but its mine and i love it
its the only rolex ill own probably because i like other watch brands
Keeping it pretty basic
I used to have a Fitbit but I lost the charger recently and it was dying anyway so I didn’t get another one.
And then a few days after that I missed having a watch so I got the cheap Casio :xd:
Every time I wear this I’m constantly checking how the light hits the urushi dial. The movement might not be much, but the dial/design is something else.
It’s like Movado if they were actually decent hahaha
Hey all
Complete watch noob (see: I have an Apple Watch and a 15 year old Fossil watch that I can’t get to work again) and I want to start collecting a few classier pieces to accessorize a bit.
What are some things to look for? I really like the look of both the simple designs with just the hands and a clean face/band as well as I like the ones you can see the gears/mechanisms. My fossil watch is a divers watch I believe (has the dial around the outside as a timer) but I do think I prefer the simpler designs.
Also any recs for a very versatile <$200cdn watch would be appreciated. Just looking for some starter points and what people are rocking
https://youtu.be/4JIhQ3Gx7N8
This is a good guide for what you should pay attention to when buying a watch. I do disagree with a couple things he says though
1. Quartz movements are the better option for most people
2. Unless you're going for a sporty style, 36-38mm is a good case size for most men. If you have smaller wrists you can go down to 34mm. Watch size is something where the trend has changed recently but it's moving towards smaller sizes now.

I'd recommend looking at eBay or Chrono24 for secondhand watches in your price range. If you want new, look at Timex and Casio. There will be a handful of options from Seiko and Orient under $200 but not many, and you might have to go to gray market sites like jomashop.
I’ll take a look thanks
Ben is good, and Quartz is like TCW says, way better for most people.
Absolutely don't buy into watch hype, it's even more BS than most of the other fashion subcategories
Theres actually a fair amount of Seiko, Casio and Citizen stuff in quartz under 200 USD. If you find some pictures of watches you like, we can probably dial ytou into something under your price point
If you don't have much experience with watches, I'd recommend going to a department store and trying on some styles just to get a feel for how they look on you. It can be really hard to visualize 36mm vs 40mm without a frame of reference and it's hard to figure out legibility, etc from a digital picture.
Also true, and they never photograph quite right either
I will find some pics from here and post them for examples of styles I like. What’s the difference between quartz/automatic and some of those other distinguishing characteristics? I don’t think the quartz/auto is an “either or” just want to make sure I’m asking right
It's the difference in what makes them tick. Quartz watches are powered by a small battery and regulated by a quartz crystal to tick once per second. The battery will likely last 1-3 years and cost $5-$20 to replace. Mechanical watches have a complex mechanism that causes a watch to tick multiple times per second. Most mechanical watches these days are "automatic" which means their power reserve is replenished by natural movements while you wear it. If you leave it on a shelf for long enough, it'll stop running until you put in on again. Service costs for these movements run higher but are generally needed less frequently.
Quartz movements are cheaper and much more accurate. Mechanical movements are more complicated but a lot of hobbyists prefer them for the smoother ticking or aesthetic/"horological" reasons.
This is a bit over generalized but applies to most watches you'll find under $1k.
@Legs thanks! Re fossil watch I have is definitely the mechanical kind, or I’m assuming as it has to be wound and then worn to keep going. I may go and see if I can rescue it…I’m sure I can but it’s a ~$100 watch so may not be worth any cost. Will keep that in kidnas I search!
Ha dial I see what you did there
If you have pictures of particular watches you like we can help steer you but I think a basic watch with good specs that’s versatile is the Casio duro (I got one recently myself). It’s a nice looking analog watch and a handful of different colors, good construction with 200 meters of water resistance (more than you’ll ever really need unless you’re a professional diver), and it looks good in different straps. If you have a leather strap, metal bracelet and a nato strap it’s one watch that can be worn in most scenarios from casual to formal
They normally retail for $80 but you can find sales on them. It’s definitely worth the money, and punches above its weight in terms of quality vs cost

what are yall wearing today ? I’m rocking the A700
The trusty Seiko sbtm. A near perfect* solar quartz with radio, so it never has to be manually set.
*22mm lugs for no discernable reason
Aw sick
My next watch purchase that I want is probably a g shock 5610, though if I can find a good deal on a 5000U that looks real nice
That is indeed a good looking watch! I don’t need anything super crazy for a first, and like you said a couple options for straps and I’m set for a good number of occasions.
I’m gonna scroll and find some stuff I like later and gather more feedback
I’m gonna scroll and find some stuff I like later and gather more feedback
Ok so to follow up, I’ve grabbed some photos from in here as well as Amazon of some watches/watch styles I like. Also, this is the fossil watch I already have and if I’m not mistaken it’s around a 42-44mm face. I’d love to get it operating again so will see about that going into the weekend.
Out of the pics, I absolutely love the brown seiko, the blue lunar watch (but I’d honestly never be able to tell the time on dunno) and the muted/pale blue traska. I also really like the blue orient watch with the visible mechanical assembly.
That said, looks like I like:
-round face/design
-some color (not incredibly picky on which) on the face, or also creams/whites/blacks
-non dive style as I already have a dive watch as long as I can get it working
-I’ve been reading analog time since I was a kid so with/without numbers is not a big deal.
Anything similar in looks, high quality as these in the $200 range? Under would be better as I’m in Canada and our dollar isn’t great.
Edit: I’m really pale skinned (blue undertones?) so I’ve read that more platinum/silver metals look good and to stay away from yellower metals like gold. Not sure if that actually matters if anyone can chime in
skin tone stuff is bullshit just get what you like more
I think you can find Seiko and Orient stuff that looks like those under $200 USD (probably under $200 CAD too)
that's a pretty broad swath of styles anyways
I believe the orient one with the gears is right around 180-210 so it’s definitely in the range.
The gold seiko presage is 5x that 😂
Anyways thanks for everyone’s help, I’ll pick up something soon and report back
I just realized the orient watch I posted looks like I ripped it from the matrix…neat
Seiko Presage is more but Seiki 5 / Seiko Sport is not
I was looking at the seiko 5 as well.
I remember above people saying that they can be modified/customized to an extent?
they can be if ur enterprising and like to tinker
Also one of the ones you posted a pic of is a Swatch watch, many of those are under $200 USD as well!
A lot of seiko presage (especially cocktail time variants) sell at around $300 grey market. At $200 Seiko, Orient, Citizen will likely be your best options for Automatic. For Quartz/Solar, Seiko & Citizen are still great, as is Timex and Casio.
There are a ton of Chinese brands popping up that I've heard good things about, but don't have any first or secondhand experience with them, so I don't feel like I can recommend them
I’m an auto mechanic by trade and hobby pc gamer. I spend 99% of every day tinkering/fixing/building.
then ur set
So he’s great!
Last question, yall are great. Can the strap be changed on most watches? I assume some it’s a lot easier, is there a style to look for?
yes
easy to change
all types
just buy the tool
"watch strap tool" should find it on google
Thanks!
Also, I'm almost certain that fossil watch you own is Quartz. Most likely a new battery is enough to get it ticking again
I didn’t see a way to access the battery and the instructions said wind it up. That would be super easy though
neat
I stopped wearing this lovely thing over the summer when I got my apple watch 😭
great choice
nooooo
I'd rather double-watch than not wear that
I've been tempted too ngl
I freaking love that watch
did you get that at Tiny Jewel Box
or in Galleria?
(I recognize you from DCD lol)
👀
Nah I purchased it gray market like a decade ago
incredible choices
Ty ty
what's the dial size
like 38?
Yeah I might double watch tbh. I might look like a schmuck but it's a beauty
if I end up getting a smartwatch I'm gonna double-watch like a dweeb
36mm
I think 34-36 is the perfect size so
goddamn
I don't think Tudor sells that style anymore. They have a blue dial iirc but not black
it looks like the base rolex explorer
just with slightly diff dial/hands
which, I know it functionally is
I guess you could use a Sony Wena if you wanna wear both?
@swarles they all look great! The only thing to just keep in mind is periodically (my understanding is every 5 years or so?) mechanical watches need to be serviced. It’s a cost to just keep in mind.
Good to know! I was actually thinking today that I may take the time/tooling to disassemble that old fossil watch and see what makes it tick yknow? 😅
All in all I have a good starting point and really appreciate all the help/feedback
Oh yeah and I saw you said you like tinkering so that coils be a great starting point I think!
I remember watching a video where a guy took apart a watch completely and fixed it up, there was only one part that he used a special tool for (there’s this long coiled piece of metal and he had a special tool to coil it, keep it coiled and push it into the movement
This exists as a double watch option
Don't know if it should
But
It does
pls don't encourage people to double watch, demonic business
If you want to get tinkering on the mechanical side, pocket watches are usually recommended, can be very cheap second hand and easier to work with
Has anyone ever regretted selling a piece?
I think back about this vintage 1930s Hamilton Rutledge I had and sold along with all of my other vintage pieces when they were getting to be too much to maintain. Such a cool piece and I think about it at least once a week still
http://www.hamiltonchronicles.com/2013/08/1935-rutledge.html?m=1
1935 Rutledge
vintage Hamilton watch restoration repair collecting collections
Will probably try to snag another one in the future but clean copies at fair prices are not so easy to come by
a pocket watch is way more cringe than double watching
never
Owning vs carrying a pocket watch are two different things imo - there are some dope pocket watches that exist that I would like to own
But I also would never actually carry it around or be seen whipping out the pocket watch at dinner, personally
Have you sold a lot? I sold a lot and consolidated into a handful of pieces. Don't think about 90% of them anymore except for the Rutledge and a vintage grand seiko I had
I sold like 5-6 watches over the course of my life
every sell was to buy an upgrade
I think maybe I pivoted completely out of vintage too quickly and miss the charm a few of them had
I sold about that many fountain pens too
Ah
and I never regret, I'm an aggressive pruner
there are very few clothes I even bump up against regretting
Mine were not exactly upgrades, more different watches entirely. Or in some cases, helped fund renovations of some kind
like maybe a single tee shirt is the only thing I can remember regretting selling
but I've got one watch and two pens now
I probably don't need both pens but it's not worth it to sell one
Yeah I can't think of many clothes I regret selling
I thought about doing both a strap and a bracelet for my watch but now that I have an aftermarket bracelet I doubt I'm gonna get a strap again
By "both", you mean like being able to swap from strap to bracelet when you feel like it?
yeah
I know plenty of internet watch ppl who do this
I'll throw my sbgm221 on a beads of rice sometimes to mix it up
Honestly too lazy to change it regularly these days though ha
Beads of rice is such a great bracelet genre
Not to wear, to work on
I've sold one watch I do regret a little now, a Seestern copy of a 62MAS, such a perfect watch and now I'm commited to buying the real one for far too much money in the future
I've wanted a 62mas for a bit too
Haven't bought anything new in years at this point though which I'm proud of
I really can't say enough good things about the Seestern one. The best lume I've ever seen on a watch. Ironically the worst part, the movement, is Seiko
Haven't heard of it before but it looks nice
hm hopefully i'm not polluting the chat but i'm headed to switzerland next month and might wanna try my hand at trying to find a gem at a vintage place - any cool lesser known brands i should keep my eye out for?
What's your budget?
And how willing to put up with keeping a vintage watch running are you? The older/more obscure, the harder and more expensive it is to keep it running
All of my watch spends have been sub 100 USD but I'm willing to go a bit more if i'm buying something unique
let's say absolute max 500USD
I'm not quite ready to go ball out :xdcrying:
if that's not enough i'll be content to go look and sigh lmao
For 500 you might have good chances with brands like Oris
i guess the best way to describe this for context I just got a frankenstein sputnik - priority is something that can be used every day but is also cool, i'm willing to sacrifice provenance for reliability. I'm cool to take it in for maintenance regularly but I don't want it to be a constant thing if that makes sense
tbh i'm pretty rookie to this i have an SNK5 and the Sputnik
Thats a good shout
Theres definitely vintage quartz omega in that price range
my main criteria are swiss made and mechanical preferred (but not opposed to quartz)
if i'm buying non swiss made in geneva what's the point lol
everything at this price point is probably gonna be pretty picked through used
I figured 😔
Window shopping it is
I’m not too proud to window shop lmao
I did unironically suggest the Sony Wena which is basically this
If you'd like you could also wear it with a good watch instead of the fake timex in this picture
I'd rather double wrist like a dweeb
A sign from the gods as I'm wearing an Explorer I as I type this
A little bit cursed, a little bit cool
If you're open to 70s/80s/90s I definitely think you can find some really cool swiss quartz pieces in that range
Women's models / <35mm are a typically a bit more affordable too. I've gotten plenty of cool 33-35mm vintage swiss watches for under $500
Lots of good now-defunct brands that you may be able to find secondhand as well. Lemania, Cortebert, Sicura, Universal Geneve, etc
I think you might be able to find Longines, Tissot... I have even seen less popular time only models from higher end brands like Girard Perregaux in that range
A fun option is that's well under your budget is swatch. I have a few vintage swatches that are really fun to wear
I think you'll need to look for a boutique though that's curated (and ideally serviced) vintage pieces though
the cool now defunct brands is actually a good thing to know - if i can find some of those in a w size that would be sick
thanks!
I'll keep my eye out for boutiques
ive never heard of it this is gas. is it jdm only or did they release outside as well
Pretty sure it's jdm only
Damn there’s Suica integrated into this too, game changer
Most of this thread (and what I own tbh) is centered around more historic watch brands or microbrands
Given that this is a fashion discord, what are some of your favorite examples of "designer" watches?
Most of these are likely to be collaborations. There are some interesting examples of both quartz and mechanical models in my opinion
I mean
It's a blind spot for me, but I can link some cool ones I've run across
The Cartier Tank is iconic
So very true
arguably the best price to performance version of the 62MAS is a collab with BEAMS
Cartier as a brand is an interesting anomaly in some ways in that it's sort of the intersection of (mostly) good matchmaking and "fashion"
In general though, much like shoes, a majority of design places won't have the right skills to make a truly great looking watch.
...now I kinda want to see what a Patek Phillipe trainer would look like
Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren have made some good quality pieces, even if they are mostly not my taste
Mixed results in terms of originality of watch designs, but there are a lot of mechanical pieces they have made to good standards
Thats because by and large the mechanical component is from another brand
My intent behind the question was to really table the "watchmaking" discussion as much as possible, but I understand the movement dictates design to a large degree as well
That said, there is a pretty huge spectrum of level of involvement, influence, control, design, manufacturing the fashion brand has with the entire process
Some of the Hermes and Louis Vuitton pieces are quite nice and are not just slapping eta or sellita movements in a case and stamping them with their logo

✓ We were invited to take a look at the Hermès Manufacture ✓ This is where they produces cases, dials and straps ✓ Come take a look! ✓
Totally understand the reputation "fashion" watches have and that the majority of it is just cheap, bad quality watches that are licensed almost entirely out to another entity
Just thought it would be interesting to collect some of the better or more interesting examples
For example, the lemaire x Lip watch is pretty interesting looking
Beams and EG I think have done a bunch, but most of them if I'm not mistaken are just different colorways for the most part
some of the issey watches are pretty interesting looking
It's clearly designed in a way that your run of the mill fashion watches are not
Issey has had some WILD watches through the years
The Verge
This digital D&D watch lets you roll a fireball from your wrist
Kill (and track) time while killing dragons.
Cool novelty item, but I think I'd get annoyed reaching for my wrist when I could just reach for physical dice and pen/paper
If I was made of money and we weren’t about to see rapid inflation I’d get one
Bright side is eggs will be cheap

first thought is could I swap out the bands for leather ones :happy_thonk:
I expect leather watch bands would fit more with the style i'm going for
i guess it'd look interesting if I'm at a DnD night at my local gaming cafe
I'd thought about outfitting my Casio with leather too lol

literally just buy one from Cheapnatostraps for like 8 quid
:happy_thonk:
Great way to flex on them haters bards
actually, this isn't leather, but it looks alright nonetheless
thats just a regular NATO strap
🤔
which, absurdly, doesn't have any information about its width
Designed to fit timepieces with 20 mm lugs.yeah, other than what it can fit.
oh, didnt see that lol, fair
regardless thats comically overpriced for what it is
Yeah + Student Discount doesn't work on RRL stuff
no amount of discounts are going to save that costing like 4 x what it should

Archer Watch Straps
Seat Belt Nylon Military Style Watch Band - Khaki, Stainless Hardware
Our Seat Belt Nylon Military Style Straps are comfortable, durable, waterproof, and washable. They are made from the strongest, softest nylon weave we could find, and finished with heavy duty stainless steel hardware. They have a handsome, luxurious sheen that will complement fine timepieces and beater military watches
(but very little differnce honestly, I own straps from both)
i like the look of this one more tbh compared to the other one here
having a few different nato straps and swapping them out is fun
yeah same
Midnight or Silver?
I was about to say the bands are the same color
Midnight but that's what I have so I'm biased. Ultimately I think it boils down to personal preference
It’s a tough decision because the midnight is currently on sale at my local tech store, the silver is also available but online
how I arrived with going with Midnight was I considered what colored bands I thought I was going to wear. I feel like you can pair darker and lighter bands with Midnight. When looking at darker bands on Silver, I just didnt like how they looked
but thats just being super anal and ultimaltely darker bands on Silver look just fine. I see a lot of people wear them. A lot of people just dont care. But being a fashion server, I think people like us put more thought into it
Exactly the angle I wanted
These are some examples that I like
I can also get covers like these? https://amzn.asia/d/bZ7rbyk

I love that mint green band
Same
It’s fun without looking cheap or childish
this fucks
Finally got myself a g shock
Timex is tempting me
But I also kind of want a new Bulova Super Seville
Oh fuck that is sick
Great constellation! I don't collect vintage anymore but I was chasing a clean constellation on a beads of rice bracelet for awhile and never got it.
Looks nice on the leather strap too
Thank you! I found a BOR bracelet for a good price but honestly really love this guy on a leather strap so I haven’t pulled the trigger
Both beautiful
I’d considered the pieface(?) constellation a few years back
piepan
Wish me luck, if work doesn’t get crazy I’m gonna call the only horologist near me and get a quote on fixing my broken Raketa and Omega…
One is gonna be cheaper than the other
I have a feeling the omega is gonna be “forget about it” pricing.
$600-$700 😐
(And won’t even look at the Raketa)
Reasonable for Omega honestly
I'm very basic in terms of watches
I have, like, an £11 Casio
I figured.
More annoyed abt the Raketa
Probably insanely hard to find parts honestly
I think all it needs is oil
Cheap casios are insanely iconic and tell the time better than a £40,000 Patek
I've got an F-710
F91?
Yeah
Now that I'm home and can expand on this
Watch doesn't work because I cracked the plastic dome on the watch and, after working in building with no AC, I noticed it was full of fog and put it in a jar with some silica packets
Won't tick, wound tight
But I may just put these away in a lockbox for future fixing and buy a cheap quartz movement off Marketplace
Thoughts on Vostok? Found an amphibian model I like on eBay
it's fine, don't spend too much
$125, but has a rare dial/metal strap
US seller
Vostoks are fun but definitely a crapshoot re: accuracy and stuff. Good watches if you want to learn to regulate them yourself.
125 is okay imo
I should get mine regulated and wear it more often
I may go for it
The Raketa is dead and I’m tired of charging the smart band tbh
Smartwatches are cool in theory, but praxis means it’s just an annoyance
I think the biggest problem I've got with smart watches is that they're just unrepairable a lot of the time
I'd still use my Charge 3 from 2019 or if all I had to do was replace the battery.
I had another Fitbit until a couple of months ago when I lost the proprietary charger.
I decided to replace it with a basic Casio for time and a pedometer for step tracking.
Both of which have replaceable batteries.
I got a little tiny Elgin pocket watch I'm repairing. Unsure if I'll keep or sell it afterwards
I wore a Tudor BB36 for almost a decade then succumbed to a Apple Watch very recently. Unless I start working in a SCIF, I can't imagine going back to a real watch
Escape wheel is broken, so going to have to put assembly on hold
into a mason jar all the parts go
Still torn on the vintage Vostok
Do I want the vintage manual/mech one or do I want a crapshoot with modern QC for an auto?
Or do I just want to go to order the cheap Invicta and call it good?
What Vostok is it?
Amphibian
do you know what movement it has?
or have a link to it
Listing says it’s the 2409 movement
Has a relatively rarer dial and a metal band
If you dm me I can share the listing. Don’t wanna put it out just in case…
In terms of cheap new watches, the Invicta 8926OB is my favorite cause it has a Miyota movement from $300 watches in it, and you can get it for under $100. I like vintage watches to work on though
The main downside is the tacky branding all over it
That was the Invicta I was looking at.
Torn because I want a Russian watch in memory of my late dad (could speak fluent Russian), but I know they’re finicky bastards sometimes
I guess you just have to decide if you want a piece that is more conversation-based but you may need to service, or a new watch that will Just Work™️
I could also just buy a cheap expedition at Target and get the Vostok for off hours stuff
Or keep my smart band for work and the Vostok for non-work stuff
I've never worked on a Vostok but I have a couple Raketas and they are super easy to work on, and you can get running pretty well with minimal effort. And the movements are super cheap if you need parts.
That’s my thought is that as the very least, I could swap out the mech for the auto down the line when it becomes a PITA
I guess I /could/ just get a Seiko like a normal fashion person, but where’s fun in that?
Personally I would get the Vostok
Just need to look carefully at the movement photos to make sure it's not a frakenwatch
I’ll ask the seller and post them here.
You can dm me as well if you want
They work fine until they don't. And not many watchmakers will work on them
Yeah, trying to get the guy to answer my messages
Because worst case scenario I can get the modern Vostok and have a watchmaker swap the dial and hands over and plop it in
But I’d like for it to be best case scenario
one's who don't are LAME
they are fun to work on
donor movements are easy to find
it's not hard
Turns out the only watch sold a while ago, but the guy has a different Vostok for an okayish price
But still, one of them is nicer than the other imo
What do y'all think about the news armoury watches?
Found them interesting
The dial is small right?
A Japanese take on a California dial is definitely different alright
And yeah thats a pretty small dial
I actually like the non-collab models more https://www.paulinwatches.com/collections/lume-modul
I always feel like such a handyman doing silly little adjustments for my watches
Copped the blue dial Vostok
Now I gotta decide what bezel I wanna swap to
Thinking about that dial.
Perhaps the basic black.
no wrong answers
Think I’m gonna go solid black for the bezel
MVMT now selling a GMT without a GMT dial
Man I love my gmt watch with a dive bezel
Ridge also has an ungodly ugly GMT with fake carbon fiber
Tho, of all the dropshit YouTube ad watches, Holzkern takes the cake for ugly.
The bezel is growing on me.
Question: my mom wants to get me a watch for Christmas. Are there any specific Citizen or Seiko y'all recommend? I dress with button downs and general Ivy Style fits

Alpinist, best "cheap" Seiko on the market
alpinist if you can afford it, otherwise save $ and get a seiko sport / seiko 5 automatic
I really hate the cyclops/wart on the new alpinists
Seconding too look at Seiko 5 range if you want a mechanical watch, otherwise one of the million Citizen eco drives
What's wrong with them? Just curious
Cyclops tend to be polarizing imo. I really like it after using one for a bit now but they take away a lot from the aesthetics & symmetry
I just personally think they're really ugly and pointless
I mean they were (and technically are) primarily functional rather than appealing to aesthetics. Especially for older 32-36mm watches, they are incredibly helpful
I wish my Airman had one, sometimes hard to see it without getting close to it
Yeah, that's why I now like mine on the vintage daydate I inherited. But for years I considered them a con and don't really fault anyone for thinking the same
I guess. I also think the main issue is that many companies don't do a cyclops well. Rolex's cyclops, especially the newer ones, protrude from the crystal way too much. Older Omega Constellations, Airmans, etc blend them much better and they don't look like they were simply glued on
Oh that's another thing. I'm pretty sure the vintage lens is acrylic and the cyclops is way more prone to chipping than a flat lens
100% is, but I think that Seiko's execution of the Alpinist cyclops is better than most. Isn't just a slab of magnification. And that uses Hardlex
