If your friends don't like you expressing yourself I think it's their problem. I wear Cuban heels pretty often and only ever get positive comments, but my friends are cool and my work is very progressive so your mileage may vary

It depends on context. If you're a student and it's the general uni jobs fair expectations will be low. If it's an industry specific event expectations will be higher. Chinos/tailored trousers + Oxford shirt + some appropriate top layer (blazer or jumper) is a basic formula. Given your position I would focus on making sure the other elements fit well rather than overly worrying about a jacket
