Your aesthetic - Topic of the day 9/28/23
How do you describe your own "aesthetic"? Do you try to stick to one clothing aesthetic or do you do some sort of combination? Or do you not follow any aesthetic at all?

Loud streetwear drawing heavily from prep.
Its some combination of streetwear and prep. I try to keep myself in this lane (leaning more one way or another depending on fit) to keep my wardrobe and personal style more focused. Think its a common mistake people make early on to try to draw from too many different aesthetics, and end up stretching themselves tooo thin.
Middle of the road "guy with clothes on" with hints of military/workwear smattered in
Vintage with a focus on militaria and workwear. I’m not just attracted to the aesthetic, but the history and construction of militaria and workwear garments are really fascinating to me.

i did it too, one of the biggest steps forward was narrowing my focus lol
Yeah I remember making a topic about it cause I started to feel it https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1136806026394484756
Last year I've assembled a minimal workwear wardrobe (thanks to waywt posts) and I'll stick to it for the time being. Going from slim-fit levis and chinos to fatigue pants feels so good lol
And I switch style when summer hits to linen camp collars and shorts (more preppy might say?)
I’m SSense styling core with a hint of c*nt and quite a bit of slut but I think I’m getting mfad pilled into slight Ivy influences
But I’m probably one of the people here that really buys into trends
The cropped rugby is true ivy slut wear cant wait to see the next evolution
Thank u
how you gonna say you are unique in buying into trends when almost every day people be wondering if they should grab a new trend here lmao
But also believe it or not my every day work outfit is mad workwear inspired LMAO
Bc my inspo is ig and tiktok baddies and their inspo is 30 yo men
I’m feeling targeted when someone uses 30 as generic old dude age
The "trends" people are grabbing here are og107s and 505s lmao
My style as of right now is very much rooted in heavily worn/patched/repaired/stained vintage, especially my own DIY stuff. Im really drawn to the detail of heavily worn clothing as well as the history it represents. Recently I've been focusing more on mid century European workwear and I've been trying to go for more oversized silhouettes when I can with some more modern pieces thrown in.
Closet is full of basics and essentials
I guess minimalist aesthetic with intention of branching out to work wear / ivy / prep
(says the guy who bought paraboots yesterday)
and learning to develop my own style
lmao true true, i mean more the fashion focused users but yes
Charli is wearing cropped rugbys for crying out loud. Definitely different from the established MFAD house style that lurkers/newbies are deciding whether to buy into
again, im basing this on a subset of users
but yes im wrong
I’m gonna be wearing a long sleeve shirt in a XXL tee and Mary Jane’s tomorrow ffs what’s more trendy than that
Depends on season, but to put a label on it, I'd classify it as "lazy luxury".
In summer it's very Umit/Haider/retro druglord vibes. White/off white as a neutral base. A lot more colour as well.
In winter it's predominantly olives and blacks, but the style leans more on the military side (often with sleek combat boots and tapered pants). Again, Umit and Haider as a stylistic reference, but more on the Haider side. In winter the silhouette tends to be more tapered than the wider fits of summer.
I've been trying to use more colours in the winter months, which I want to keep experimenting with. A few years ago I used to wear exclusively black/white/grey in winter, so I'd say it's been a successful experiment so far.
I feel like your aesthetic is the guy I want to talk to on a yacht party
i need more druglord in my style
love sleaze
Vintage and 70s inspired tailoring with a weird mix of contemporary “fashion” brands as well as western and workwear
Honestly i dont know ive never stopped feeling like my style is a bit all over the place
Ive just gotten more comfortable in that ambiguity
Weeg I feel like your style is very cohesive
If that helps
I really want to think that my style kind of orients towards looking at two primary axes of aesthetic reference points:
* Implementations of sleazecore or French riviera homage during the summertime (Malti's albums have been a big inspo in this regard)
* Fall/Winter focusing on an academic look
These two are counterbalanced by looking at implementing whatever is in my wardrobe in a dad-adjacent way, as well as the fact that I search for colours, patterns and textures I find to be comfy, cozy and out of left field. I mostly found patchwork garments and brands to be at the center of this idea for a while (Certain garments I've purchased from Loewe, KPC, and Haider Ackermann have pushed that idea forward), but now I've been focusing more on finding garments with material or cuts that suit my body shape to best forward these theses.
I used to follow brands like Charles Jeffrey Loverboy and KidSuper as saved searches, but now I've realized that not every piece needs to be idiosyncratic to be a showstopper. Beams Plus and finding more thrifted garms that act as my basics has really helped me lay a foundation so that I can support whatever ideas I want to play with next.
I want to be consistently pushing myself in terms of what I'm able to accomplish with colour combinations in my wardrobe, and I hope that whenever I post fits, people will recognize them as me.
Boy I love talking about myself
relatable
you've heard of dark academia, now get ready for: light academia
i dress in tree color palettes and wear sweaters when it's not too hot

"guy who shops at uniqlo"
Comfortable
Guy who wants to wear ivy style but can’t afford it
For a more real answer it’s no real aesthetic, I enjoy wearing all black as much as I enjoy wearing some color, I like larger fitting clothes as they move when I move maybe like lemaire influenced?
Idk hard to describe, feels right to me
Buy used. You can get a blazer for $30-$50
Rugby shirts are like under $20
Ties are cheap as hell
Pleated pants you can get for under $20
I mean obviously I know that
this is my real answer too
but in a less cool way
Ur the one in gq
Job interview core but with chest hair
I think having a core "identity" that has some sort of stylistic consistency is cool
But at the same time some days I just feel like wearing chunky sneakers, a hoodie and sweatpants ya know
I'm also lucky in a sense, because basically I can wear whatever I want to work, and as long as I look presentable nobody really cares. That also frees me from having to deal with the nightmare that is a separate work wardrobe
This came off rude. I know I can do ivy cheap but I’m very specific with what I like and also don’t have a lot of money to blow on new clothes (dad in single income household)
So I wear what I’ve got and upgrade when stuff wears out
Was more making a self deprecating joke than being serious
I feel like being able to wear all of your clothes with all your other clothes is extremely important but I don’t feel like that has to follow a singular aesthetic if that makes sense
this is huge. exactly how I do my shopping
playing with a mashup of styles can be cool too tho
I don't have a good word/phrase for the aesthetic I'm going for. Flowy, nature-inspired, crunchy hiker vibes? Sometimes with a hint of ivy, sometimes just a full on trad-leaning ivy (when I dress specifically for professional events vs casual everyday clothes)
no for sure. it's so much fun. I still have lots of stuff that doesn't go with most of my wardrobe just because it fits a vibe I want sometimes
Yeah I agree, I think I do that to an extent as I can’t describe what I wear with any overarching term. Some days it’s gorp, some days it’s more ivy leaning, but I can wear almost all my clothes with almost all my clothes
Like if anyone has a name for what I'm going for here lmk because I like the vibes
Im running into an issue now which seems like an identity crisis.... most would probably describe my style as workwear and punk rockish, but these dont feel like an "aesthetic" to me because its how I've always dressed. As I develop my style I feel like it is easier for me to know what I don't want to do then to see positive examples I want to move towards. I want to develop outfits with eclectic but quiet textures, and I want them to feel like I've lived in them for a while. And then when I look back at pictures, they all just look the same and unremarkable
Desert plant man?
"hikes on weekends"
I wear very large clothes
I'm just an old dude who is trying not to look to old but also not like an old dude trying to look young 🤣
gardencore
except your garden has ivy vines growing in it too
I made a silly mind map thing a while back.
I'm still very new to this, but I'd describe my moment rn as 'skater slowly trying to get into ivy'
I love the key phrases here
Usually falls somewhere between "comfy goth" and "dude why are you so dressed up to get bagels"
Bagels is a valid event
goth girl
Dusty teddy bear brought to life by a fairy’s wish
Autismcore--Mostly just basic bastard with some occasional elements that I appreciate but most other people go "huh?"
(Also I guess I just came out as being on the spectrum here lol)
"University student overseas but your parents would shit themselves if they see you've been wearing anything even slightly outside of the mainstream so you resolve to wear normal clothes but in black and hope that's enough to appease their weird [x]-generation Asian immigrant sensibilities"-core
lol same, been trying to make things a little spicier but it’s slow moving
I really don’t know what words to use to describe my aesthetic, I take inspiration from a lot of things, mostly womenswear right now
Chill vibes
All I know is that I'd like to work more comfy goth into whatever it is I'm doing at the moment
IDEK i have a lot of niches
- japanese textile flowy stuff
- evan kinori adjacent
- slp wide fit?? lite
- yohji/issey adjacent
and everything in between
'the ALD at home'
I love how this has more to do with emotions, symbols, and a self-reflection than it does with defined aesthetics. Cool way to look at it!
“Am I opium?”, “would hedi be proud?”
whatever I can get at goodwill
What kinda style do you gravitate at goodwill? There’s so many!
Hah very good point. My fit I just posted today was all from goodwill (minus the boots)
But I'm currently trying to find some good looser/wider pants
which is actually pretty easy
GORPy Ivy? Especially the last two with the ranger mocs + baggies combo.
I've always felt like gorp implied nylon, hokas/salomons, etc, and that's def not the vibe tho
But I think the baggies, ranger mocs, and national parks tees are like a softer gorp
Idk, the nylon Patagonia shorts leans very GORP in my mind.
Yeah, soft gorp is a good word
I can dig it
I’d say 60% ivy, 10% loafers, 10% soft gorp (good word gsh), 10% drake’s, and 10% occasionally dabbling in things like milsurp.
Tl;dr: basic bastard plus
My aesthetic is copying people from MFAD and IG who are more creative than me and hoping it looks good
I definitely think you do your own thing
Well thank you I appreciate that. I definitely have a lot of interests and inspirations, that I try incorporate into some semblance of a sensible aesthetic
Aesthetic = big coat big pants?
At this point basically yes
