Fast Fashion - Topic of the day 7/23/24

Industry-promoted overconsumption is real. Even brands that tout themselves as slow or not fast fashion are unbelievably fast from the perspective of "how often do I need to be buying clothes". Completely new sets of clothes in brand new cuts 4x a year minimum, collaborations and special releases and seasonal sales and whatever else gets people to tune in 365 days a year. Like, none of this is normal or sustainable from a long-term perspective, even if Shein and Zara are the worst offenders.

Yeah they shrink a lot on the first wash. Good news: they probably won't shrink more. Bad news: I have not had a lot of success stretching them back out compared to denim. Personally would size up if that's an option.

Cultural Capital - Topic of the day 7/1/24

I think style of dress is definitely a form of cultural capital. I think fashion as we think of it on MFA (i.e. displaying competence in dressing) confers almost zero cultural capital in the sense of social mobility or power. Look at the average terrible fit from academics, politicians, etc.

I guess it's easier to dress down than dress up, so maybe something like Acne or You Must Create or A Kind of Guise since they do a wide range including footwear and some suiting. Plus lots of interesting pieces and I get the small dopamine hit of new patterns each season
