Parental Influence - Topic of the day 3/17/25
My father was of a different generation, but wore suits daily. I feel very grateful that he imbued a lot of basic knowledge about tailoring that I think stopped being passed down a generation earlier in many other families. He was a shoe nut. And just for perspective, he had a collection of about thirty black captoe oxfords. Wish my feet were his size, some of them were absolute classics.

Style Spotlight: Heritage - Topic of the day 3/8/25
Is it? I feel like thrifting is so much more mainstream and there is so much more knowledge out there these days. Stuff, online or actual thrift shops, feels way more picked over and expensive than it was when I was growing up.

In general, strong agree. However the old school Japanesd vintage repro brands...Real McCoys and Warehouse for example, make some high quality stuff. Heck, even Orslow is basically heritage.

Gatekeeping in fashion - Topic of the day 3/1/25
That's totally understandable, but I don't think that belongs under the label of gatekeeping. That's just trying to maintain the vibe of a place you like.

Gatekeeping in fashion - Topic of the day 3/1/25
I know this isn't exactly a hot take, but I think gatekeeping in general... I mean in any hobby or area really, is one of the most toxic, unproductive and unpleasant habits. Really immature as well. If something is cool, everybody who wants to know about it should. It's good for the people, good for the product, good for the people who make it.

IYKYK pieces - Topic of the day 2/27/25
There was a blog written by Ethan Newton of Brycelands, in which he said "a man's greatest sartorial pleasures are largely a private affair." I think he wrote it more to say that you can wear what you love and actually 99% of the people won't notice or care. But I also think it can also apply to little details that others can barely see, like a nice dress shirt worn under a jacket and tie, or a good pair of socks when you're not sitting down to deliberately show them.

Aime Leon Dore - What the Hell is Going On? - Topic of the day 2/19/25
One point I will make, and I don't think this is necessarily connected to the rise or fall of their popularity, is it well a lot of people compare their clothes to Ralph lauren, the quality of all the pieces I have touched is significantly lower than that. A lot of their stuff feels a bit cheap to the touch.

Appropriation vs Appreciation - Topic of the day 2/10/25
This is an aside but one cultural appropriation issue that is in my proximately is Japanese culture. It's interesting because the very vast majority of people born/raised in Japan are absolutely thrilled at the prospect of foreigners getting involved in any aspect of their culture. Getting into music or anime, studying martial arts or tea or ikebana, trying on clothes...even the cringiest examples they tend to approve of. However there is another aspect, and that is the Japanese diaspora. And what I've come to understand is that to them, it does affect their cultural identity and it is seen as cultural appropriation. And I've had people from that background express very strong feelings about the matter before. I don't have a pony in the race and wouldn't know how to parse the nuances (although a white guy dressed up as a samurai will always look dumb as hell). I just find the contrast to be very interesting.

Selling clothes - Topic of the day 2/1/25
Japanese market, but I sell tons of stuff on Mercari. Pretty much anything will move there, as long as you research market price and ask a realistic value.

Cold Weather Clothing - Topic of the day 1/29/25
Down is insanely warm and efficient, and is 100% necessary once you hit a certain temperature. "Puffers" are a lightweight option to employ that warmth, often with a boxy hem.
