The best argument in the world not to do this, at least with anything that isn't removable, is that it is more difficult to resell.

I don't need nor want my initials/name imprinted or embroidered on every single thing I own.

I’m a big fan of personalization, I’m a bookbinder/book conservator and I collect historical bindings that people had tooled with their initials and/or the date

My stance is definitely swayed by the fact that like holfram i think the best thing is wearing someone else’s initials People live and die and leave their marks on the things they owned and lived with and I think that’s cool

Thanks I’m suppressing the urge to post every single one I own lol Does tailoring also count as personalization? Food for thought

it looks tacky to me so i don’t. also i want to strangle parents who do this to their kids because it’s a safety hazard. (in the sense that it gives a complete stranger your kid’s name, opening the door to various bad and/or uncomfortable interactions.) now familial heraldry is different, that shit’s cool as fuck. tartans, coats of arms, and equivalents? that shit’s awesome also it’s easier to more subtly work into your outfit

I have a ring with my family crest but it’s too small for me and it’s also gold so resizing is expensive :nooooo:

Also monogramming/engraving can look good if the overall way it’s done is clean and properly done. It can also help add onto the story of an object if it’s a piece of jewelry. Not engraving/monogramming because resell value is a poor argument, because taken further it’s “buy whatever is in style and inoffensive because I might make more money when I sell it again”

I always liked the look of these Supreme bucket hats with all the pins but hated the idea of buying it with pins I didn’t pick myself, so this spring/summer I’ve been planning to get a hat and gradually buy pins and do one myself!!!

I think I learned about monogramming from "the preppy handbook"

Totally agree with this. I have my grandfather’s watch, which has his initials engraved on the back, and I adore that detail. But I have no intention of engraving my own initials on my own watch.

I lived in the South when I first moved to America and was extremely perplexed by monogramming which these people put on absolutely everything. Could not figure out why grown ass adults had to put their names on everything they own like they're in 1st grade bc where I'm from you only put names on your things when you're a child and lose things at school

possibly the only name that increases resale value of things rather than decreases

i love personalised things. got a tote bag my girlfriend made me with a guitar embroidered onto it and i love it it’s nice to add touches that work for you. too often folks get concerned with resale value (more related to my music interests) but it’s far more important that what you have does what you need it to

based personalization in the sake of like, adding imagery of your own is infinitely better imho than including your name or initials

Initials/name can be cool if the font/script is pretty. But yeah personalizing it all the way can be a good addition to an item

Yeah im with lyon on this. Imagery > name/initials. But thats propably a matter of what kind of aesthetic your into. Though im tempted to embroider a name tag onto one of my shirts, just for shits and giggles. Or maybe pronouns?
