Tried on a few Bedford jackets today. I thought they were ok, but not amazing. But I think that style isn't really my jam.

eg jackets are so damn good. loiters have my favorite detail: the buttons on the back to bring in the waist end up giving you a double vented finish. A callback to an older jacket they did, the "Baker" which had pleated vents and a callback to an era of tailoring that i always lose track of. Either way, ingenious way to build in a vent
Comebackkid brought up the polos for SS24 -- my brain glossed right over them. Looking back at it, they look great (and also can't get more excited for what looks to be a double breasted tropical wool blazer)

Anybody have feelings about "New Bedford" vs. Bedford?
They style differently. New Bedford closer to a sport coat, Bedford closer to a chore coat. New Bedford has details like functioning cuff buttons, sewn buttons, etc whereas Bedford is a plain hem on sleeves and uses butcher buttons. New Bedford also is a bit slimmer

nah, new bedford was explicitly the New Bedford. It looks like this season's jacket lineup is bedford, loiter, shooting jacket (collarless joint), cutaway (open quarters fwk joint), db jacket, andover, maine guide (what a throwback). No New Bedford that I can see

id love to finally get a bedford. i tried one on a couple years ago and i remember it fitting really nice, i just wasnt confident enough to have something like that in my wardrobe yet
lots of great fabrics this season, already a few out at nepenthes. my favorite is the uniform wool serge they use -- the same fabric used in old police uniforms and they've been using it since like 2010. Still milled in the USA, though I forget who does it. Always ends up in a dressier style (used to have a baker in it) . OBSESSED with this brand, however, can't really afford the clothes. I did get the lace-up version of their Vans collab.
What I love about EG in particular is their asymmetrical designs that are actually wearable in day-to-day life given the right context, which I actually call "wearable weird"

I actually wonder, since EG clothing have special stitching and construction made, does anyone actually get them altered to fit them better or just accept it as it is?
This looks pretty tame for EG, however, I like the colors and the collar looking like a mockneck
the rule is trust in Daiki and just buy your size
EG Construction is pretty barebones, honestly nothing special. Cut stuff up! My rule is "what is the intended fit of this" before I chop it up. example: the 19th century is a bit of an a-silhouette shirt with a blousey effect. To try to chop it into a Normal Dress Shirt wouldn't match that intent, and thus is worth grabbing something else
but different seasons fit differently
The only tailoring i’ve ever had done is simple hemming on pants/shorts
Fit varies by season but i’ve been doing L for tops and M for pants for long enough that I just trust it will fit
that only bites me in the ass if i buy something from the slimmer fitting era and it’s too small haha
100%. Also exercise caution on just "sizing up" on pieces from that era. I've gambled a few times doing that and lost (but i'm also a fatass with 0 drop and short as hell).
It feels odd to tailor a brand like EG to me. With traditional tailoring you really@need stuff to fit your body right. But EG is so casual and pulls from milsurp that I can’t imagine doing something like slimming a jacket

disagreed, tts or up on most of it. pants fit small (so size up) unless they're alpha (s/m/l). Hoodies are tts, shirts are tts and fit long and a bit big (think BB Big Shirt circa 1992)
Yeah shortening pant legs and shirt sleeves is the most I ever go with altering clothing

eg a size 30 workaday cords will be 15" waist, rather than a contemporary pattern which puts it at 15.5" on a 10.5" rise

I haven’t bought workaday stuff in a while but I used to size up on pants compared to my mainline EG size
My current brain worm is last years aircrew pants in the heavyweight ripstop. I slept on em, then bought a pair on YJP recently but the order was cancelled

I'd say it's really a subjective thing to talk about the "intended fit".
For me, I try to view it in the context of what a designer is referencing (eg: is this a riff on a blouse but trying to put it in a more masculine context?), how the brand and stores style it, how I think I'd style it. I try to think about the mods I'd make to it (eg slimming) and think about what it'd do to the proportions of the garm.
EG: If I am slimming a shirt that is wide -- will it be in proportion to the length of the shirt? Will the pockets be in a spot that's a coherent spot for a pocket (or too far to the side?). Once you start to get into calculus of things like "well, I can move the pocket too" you usually are better off just getting a different garm

I think I tried on Carlyle pants with that pattern. They looked great, but didn’t fit. FW19. The pattern was stunning in person but they didn’t have my size left

Do folks prefer the Andover jacket as a 3 button or a 3 roll 2? I got the tropical wool one from last season on sale at Nepenthes recently and it came with the lapels pressed as a 3 button, but I feel like I've more often seen it styled the other way
Anybody have any Woolrich Woolen Mills pieces from when Daiki was at the helm? I remember wishing I could afford it back in the day and I kind of want to track some down but not sure how to distinguish which pieces were his (other than the ones I distinctly remember, like the back/blue check coats and vests)
yeah, i've got a few. Key giveaway is when the garm has a tag with writing - That indicates daiki era. Tag is always Woolrich Woolen Mills with the sheep. The WWM Sheep tag was also shared in the mcnairy era. Stuff from that era isn't bad but definitely missing on detailing that daiki did. Shirts and pants didn't have the writing tag, so are a bit tougher to judge if it's mcnairy or daiki eras

I actually have the knockaout short version of this, picked up from YJP years ago, but was wondering if anything else had been made of this fabric, or what term did EG used for this. Never seen it elsewhere than knokabout short and jacket.

I know the guy behind Randy’s Garments interned at Nepenthes and this shirt is the Koolnit poly mesh (no stretch).
I don't think the shorts have much stretch at all.
got hands on a few things this week from current season. while they are not for me, the plaid heavy twill shirting is so nice. gem after a few f/w seasons of good patterns but middling fabrics in the shirting. also can say everything i tried on felt the same in sizing as s/s (shirting and bedfords)

imo a lot of eg, at least in recent years, legitimatly fits oversized, sometimes aggressively oversized
it's only a half-joke to trust Daiki and go tts. there's no real shame in sometimes sizing down
the short answer is, as al mentioned, it depends on if it's new or older
if it's a newer cruiser, and assuming you're going to style it in a Weeg way, I think you're safe sizing down

2011 wool cruiser is safe to size down. 2012 and 2013 were more tts. 2017?(the Woolrich season) tts or +1. 2021 tts or down if you're slim/not layering

19th c is one my fav shirt patterns. The round hem is great untucked casual but tuckable for a good slouchy suit.

Its probably so, if you are climbing and you have to hang upside down, you can transfer your items from the normal pockets to the upside down pockets and then you dont lose your stuff. Think about it

they’ll have a wider array of stuff for sure
as in just B&M, or nepenthes specific? NNY will have pieces that aren't online, special installations somtimes, and older season stuff that's tough to find. Nepenthes also has a few house lines beyond the normal EG/Needles/South2 West8 umbrella that they don't wholesale. Woburn Walk out of the UK, Garment District Productions in NY, AiE (wholesaled but nobody carries em), used to have Rough & Tumble

With a t-shirt or long sleeve button up with jeans (if that's what you mean by styling). trying to decided between the small which lines up nice with my shoulders and sleeves ending at wrist (albeit not quite a "relaxed" fit). Versus the medium which is a little baggy in the shoulders & torso, and the sleeves go down to my thumb joint

I have a combi suit form SS20 in micro sanded twill, I find it nice, maybe a bit lighter than the twill pants I got (they are SS22) and the texture does definitely feel a bit different to the touch but not much, and can be worn next to skin without issue. The one thing to note and surprised me is how much cat hair my combi suit picks up

I was hesitant but the poly blends really are different once you handle it in person. for the aviator jacket I have, the poly coats the outside of the cotton fabric so its poly "waxed". Feels just like a waxed jacket but can be washed by hand.

In general more expensive designer and designer adjacent brands I'm more likely to trust their textile choice
in more recent years there def has been a shift to more synthetic blends, but also the synthetic blend stuff thats been coming out recently have been really nice

i was unsure of the poly blend stuff until 2019 when I got to handle (and subsequently buy) a floral jaquard madison parka. i've used it a lot over the years and it's holding up pretty well after 4 fall/winters of wear. i'd have zero issues/doubts buying this at retail again.

The other one isn't in the best of areas granted, but it seems to be getting better as new bars/taprooms/restaurants are opening up around it. In staying that, you'll not get any trouble there if you're just going about your normal day visiting a clothes shop

A flat-lay is a really tough way to critique but the J Crew jacket is longer in the body and more slim cut. Generally just more standard and boring. The EG one is boxy and cropped which is more fun and interesting on that style of coat imo.

They are shades of the same in nearly every way, but the difference will be in how to style. Intentionally longer sleeves on the EG one, more option for tapering. EG jackets typically cut a bit more of a straight or even A silhouette, whereas jcrew will be a typical V taper (even if not drastic). From there, it's about the details -- the zip, the signature snaps at the hem, the lining, the slant on the check pocket, the internal pockets, and styling it as a match with the fatigues

I'd rather think of eg as craftsman style, rugged and durable with purposeful, functional details
the association i made between the two is less about the extraneous aspects and more about the quirks and fun parts of the house. while the designs are laser focused and intentional, when the garment gets to me, a lot of those details get adapted into something they weren't made for, like putting my credit card in my hat's pocket and tap on the card's reader with it, or using my work shirts exclusively when i am not working
btw i had never heard of the winchester house but it's now on the bucket list of my future west coast road trip.
side note, the climbing pants from this season are so underrated

yah i've noticed the smaller ones may not have a lot of the collab items
I tried on all the Uniqlo collab jackets yesterday. Despite the parka being my favourite online, it was my least favourite in person. The fabric is real smooth and it reads very technical to me. Looks more like a raincoat than I expected. The silhouette is cool though and it kind of makes me want a fishtail parka but I think this one's just not for me.
The utility jacket was the standout to me though. I low key want to sell my green Patagonia parka that fits too slim on me and buy the green utility jacket.
I liked the cut of the bomber but the texture of the polyester exterior kinda ruins it for me. Feels like Halloween fake spiderwebs in hand. I also liked the utility jacket but neglected to try it on

Bought a pair of rip stop fatigues. I’m a medium across the board but these things fit huge. Anyone ever shrink these through washing/drying or something? Or should I just pass them on to someone who can fill them out? Don’t want to mess with them if it’s a fruitless endeavor and rather keep them in a solid state for their next owner

Wrong brand thread but that’s something I love about the Kapital ring coat. It’s long, but cut longer on the sides and shorter in the center of the back, so it’s easy to ride a bike with but still has the long coat vibes. I think I read somewhere that bicycle riding was specifically the consideration that led to that design choice but who knows.

If you've worn EG for long enough you remember the years where they were really undersized. The newer stuff is oversized but the earlier seasons I'd have to buy XL for everything.
I’ve noticed that in proxying earlier seasons. An S 19th century shirt the last few years is 56cm p2p but the same size further back is <50cm

unsolicited rules of thumb for some seasonal ids:
7 buttons on a shirt = post 2020.
6 buttons = , look at the tag.
Tags: black with white text = post 2014, white 'new' tag = post 2013, old tag with black threading = SS06-fw2012. Red thread 'old tag' = pre ss06.

Workday is indecipherable (intentionally, it's supposed to be 'seasonless'. Cuts and all that still have changed dramatically, though never been as slim as mainline)

They do, tabs with two snaps on them. I believe they’re ground pants. They’re still a little loose even snapped on the second button! I just wear a belt or let ‘em ride down a bit.

i think 18 was the beginning of the embiggening, but sizing didn't change until 19. my fw18 flannel work shirt in medium, fits almost the same as my fw19 one in small
also, within the skinny as hell years, 2016 takes the cake. i got a few things from 14-17 and the 2016 stuff i can't fit in at all anymore

how do the fatigues fit? i've read some descriptions that they're kinda tapered but it's kinda hard to tell from shop photos. Some have the fit model with a bunch of stacking while others look solid from the front/back but no side angles

EG currently fits somewhat big but the cut is very intentional. If you want the EG look go TTS. Sizing up/down risks a few oddities in things like sleeve/jacket length etc
On ripstop, it's not my fav fabric for jackets. I'd probably look for a Bedford in twill/double cloth/moleskin over ripstop myself. But it's a matter of taste.

I had a nyco Bedford which is kinda similar and I found it kinda hard to wear. It wasn’t heavy enough for colder months but not light enough for when it was warm, it was also too slim for my liking which made it even harder for me to make use of
The NB jacket (New Bedford) is way better imo, little bit roomier for layering, I have mine in dark brown corduroy and find it much more versatile, I was wearing it in the last fit pic I posted to WAYWT. I usually size up to an XL because I’m kinda inbetween sizes but I wear an L in any modern EG

I picked up an older Bedford (pre 2013) and I'm trying to figure out the material. It's 100% cotton, a greenish color (greener than khaki but not olive), midweight with twill like outer and the inner side feels softer/brushed. Any ideas?

EG isn't cheaper in Japan, because it's made in the US. So if you're looking for better deals on Japan made stuff stuck to Kapital etc.
EG quality is pretty solid, but idk if that's really its selling point. A lot of it is improvements on simple items with fun details. Construction is an added benefit

Like a really thicc Donegal, quite fluffy and soft. I like it but suspect longevity might not be great. Luckily an interliner won't need much/any washing.

Andover is a weird jacket. Definitely the most Tailored of the eg jackets.
Would be hard pressed to recommend ANY old ones though, they were all like drop 8 and cut overall strangely. Talking here pre 2013 (old tags). After 2013 is a whole different league of the same strangeness

Best to compare measurements then. Of the EG pieces I have, I went with my usual size of M for tops which fits relaxed but I have to get XS for pants to have them fit my waist well. But in the end it’s personal for how you want it to fit

tangentially - tried some ss24 shirting today. really great. snagged the ivy popover in the iridescent blue. fit is consistent with the flannels and 19th ct i've gotten the last few seasons. fabric is far better than i expected

How have EG’s fatigue and over pant sizing changed over the years? I know the shirts have gotten longer/roomier; wondering if there’s similar changes with the pants
pants have gotten bigger all around (waist/thigh/hem). inseams have all been fairly consistent between like 29" and 31" ime.

I mean, EGs current thing is being pretty oversized. It's a vibe. They do go down to XXS from what I know, but not sure of availability of those sizes outside of Nepenthes stores in Japan and maybe the NY one.
Silhouette is a thing though, and if you don't want to buy into the EG silhouette there's other places to get stuff similar to the ivy shirt.

19th century BDs are just a particular take on an OCBD pattern really. They fit really long and very A-line.

Much wider at the waist than the shoulders. Like an A.
Not all of EG does but I've had EG inspo pieces for awhile in my mind. I really love some of their wool shawl cardigan jackets I've seen on eBay for example

I think theres overlap with your style and EG, but especially these type of shirts are not that distinct from other brands, and are specifically aimed for the EG silhouette

How does the heavyweight cotton ripstop on last seasons fatigues compare with the spring summer ripstop and/or orslow fatigues? I assume it’s warmer and obviously heavier, but does it fit significantly differently due to the weight? Been trying to move away from denim because the heavier fabric can make getting the perfect fit a hassle so I’m trying other fabrics. Sorry if this is more appropriate for #questions-and-advice
The fit is about the same in my experience it’s just a little more rigid due to it being a lot thicker and heavier

that is going to be absolutely tiny and extremely cropped. even the mens version was tiny. Also stiff, as that's the "double cloth" which is both cool and stiff as a board. I had fatigues in that fabric that I wore daily and couldn't really break in

I keep my ID and debit card in there when I run errands and I’ve had many a cashier get uncomfortable when I started unzipping that pocket

@algoresky question inspired by your waywt post yesterday: how would you describe the fit of the NB compared to the bedford? I have a bedford that I sadly never really wear because I find it fits me weirldy (a bit short and boxy), and I've sometimes wondered if the NB might work better for me. It looks great on you so I figured I'd ask!
That's a good question. I haven't owned any newer (post 2019) "old" bedfords, only tried on. From my memory it was about an inch shorter in body and sleeves than the OB I tried that season, the old bedford fit a bit boxier.
Comparing it to older bedfords I have owned -- it fits similarly. A bit longer than the older ones. It's got details like a surgeon sleeve (though still the shirt sleeve style construction as the bedford).
Tldr: Fits closer to tailoring where the "old bedford" definitely ends up wearing more like a chore coat

fwiw i'm 5'5" and the sleeves on small are borderline short (at least on the blue iridescent. didn't try others to know if they shrunk differently in production)

Quality is the same - for better or worse. It's how they fill capacity after they finish seasonal production
so made by the same folks and machines to the same standard. Fits are different. Fabrics are overruns (extra from seasonal), stuff they get from jobbers, stuff they run forever and have a billion yards of (olive sateen for instance), and they'll try new fabrics/mills that sometimes they bring into mainline (like the tri-blend-wool)
always wondered about all this. I wish they still used sateen for mainline.

Yeah too tall / skinny. I'm 6'2 but can generally get away with xs eg pants cos I have a long torso. The overalls/combi suits just don't work unfortunately.
M is about long enough but wildly big elsewhere.

How does the loiter differ from the baker? Seems very similar, is the loiter just the updated version?
I think the baker was more a trad sport coat, closer to the NB or Andover/Lawrence. Loiter is more a hunting jacket/field coat/chore coat.

Baker was more cropped. Double vented (vents were pleats). Definitely slimmer than the loiter or bedford. Looser and short than the Andover. Somewhere between the New Bedford and loiter in styling
Haven't run it in quite a while, so I'd expect this one to be slim. The really old tag ones fit similar to the current loiter

those are women's (FWK). Going to be a different fit all around. The fabric is a reverse sateen (as in the same weave as OG107s). Judging from the inner button and tags, SS11 or SS12

if you want a perfect match you just need to make sure the % of materials is the same. i think EG has been using the same poly wool blend in the last 3-4 years but yours is a bit older, i think.

the ancient lookbooks are up on the website. https://www.engineeredgarments.com/collections . Older seasons are really cool too -- they were inventing their own factory / developing new techniques (new machines) and didn't have enough $ to get their own fabrics made. That changed after daiki went to WWM. This means ya see a lot of recurring fabrics, some really weird rare stuff that they got like a single bolt of, and a lot of repurposing of other fabrics. The light brown ya see in the earliest lookbook seasons is an actual sailcloth canvas repurposed for jacketing / bags / shoes / pants

so if you're looking at pre-owned and you don't know the season, you really need measurements
should add they're intentionally oversized. they want you to go tts for an oversized fit

It's just a simple overshirt -- tee or collared shirt under. visually heavy pants if it's the winter wool (sateen, wool, denim, canvas, etc). Non-sneakers is my go-to -- derbys, boots, etc.
If it's a cotton twill or a lighter wool or something like that, you have a lot more flexibility in my mind for pretty much any pants or shoes

In your guys’ experience do the older numeric-sized pants line up with the alpha sizing they use now (small = 34”)?
I usually wear a ~32” in most other pants but wear a small in EG, so I was curious if I should stick with my usual 32” waist or size up on older stuff like I do with the more current pants
The numeric sized pants are true to the size on the label IME, a lot of them fit slimmer in general though so you might consider sizing up for the extra space in other dimensions

I also have this same dilemma, looking at pants that’s tagged as sized 28 and 30 and wondering which one to get. I’m a XS in EG in tops, and waist is 30”. I’m leaning size 30 size I can always belt it up.

imo yes. But like bedford, loiter has grown. My old M olive cord is probably 2 sizes down from my newer M poly/wool herringbone
yeah specifically looking at current season stuff. it's a difference of ~2 inches pit to pit and about an inch in shoulder between bedford/loiter
That sounds right. Loiter is very slouchy and it shows in the dropped shoulders
I think it's easy to size a bedford like a chore coat or even a more tradional blazer, but the loiter just doesn't quite work that way imo

Not necessarily. I think it works with a range of fits. But it is inherently slouchy and I just wouldn't try to unslouch it by sizing down

Depends on the season. Fairly hefty. Not worth buying if you just want a "normal" ocbd - just get Kamakura/Jpress/vintage Brooks instead.

A is the opposite in that it's either straight or in this case the opposite of a taper

so it's a BIG silhouette. The older ones have REALLY high gussets that need like a 14"+ rise in order to tuck and not have them slip out. Those have 6 buttons on the placket which is how you can ID them. Even with this, fits vary so buyer beware

Depends on what you're looking for in a shirt. The workshirt is the OG standard for EG and is a rip of a Big Yank shirt. Still has an A-silhouette but is more conventional.
The short collar shirt is a good one up your alley imo, but in all of these if you just want a basic shirt get it elsewhere. Buy an EG shirt for a particular intention

I'd hand wash that or dry clean it if you want it to maintain it's shape. The lining and interfacing (different than a canvas, which no EG jackets have except some southwick stuff from a decade+ ago) will shrink if washed hot or dried at all
If it was me and it was an unlined chorecoat style (eg: bedford) I'd consider washing it normally knowing that it's going to make it really wonky and "worn in". Even then, it'd be a choice to change the garm pretty fundamentally
Yeah it was shrinkage I’m concerned about mainly! I’ve never had anything dry cleaned before so I suppose I’m just unsure about what to expect if I went down that route

yeah. If you use cool water and air dry you're probably okay. If you're at all worried, I'd bring it to a dry cleaner which should run ya like $15. Shouldn't need to get it cleaned often

That'd be the "Tanker" jacket from FW14 or so. if you google "Engineered Garments Tanker Jacket" you'll see fits of it to get an idea of how it fits on someone. The notable thing that you might find off is the constantly stand collar and the handwarmer pockets being pretty high

bedfords are the easiest jacket in the world to wear. Go good with a tee, go good with a button up. Good with jeans, good with slacks. Still the modern chorecoat that happens to have a great peak lapel

Most the footwear collabs are assymetrical cos it's easy/cheap/lazy.
Though fw24 has quite a lot of assymetry in the main collection.

I feel like most people agree RW is just generally pretty uncomfortable but that was remarkably bad for me

It's for cinching the hem. If there isn't a drawstring it was probably removed by a previous owner

Anyone familiar with this shirt? Fabric looks like chambray but it's hard for me to tell from this pic
Chambray from SS10 or SS11. I had that shirt, do not recommend it. Fit is very regular (like 20" p2p iirc on small) but the pleat in the pockets give it a nasty shape unless you're wearing it as an overshirt and the fabric isn't conducive to that

the couple shirts i have/had with that tag i found fit relatively normal (22/23" for a large) at least in comparison to some of the newer stuff i've had
case in point being some bedford jacket i had bought recently and had to sell again cos it was fucking mental big for an XL

There are replacement buttons on the inside of the left back pocket on my pairs
Just getting a non matching button from your local tailor would certainly fit the ethos of the brand fwiw.

Looks like they don't sell them online anymore, damn. You can probably email the guy and see about buying enough to justify shipping, they have vintage metal catseye and bone buttons and all kinds of cool options
I bought a bunch awhile ago and use the old catseye metal workwear buttons on my flannels, they will never break in the wash

I like mine. Use both sides a lot this time of year as top layer and never actually use it as a liner
Looking at a black one with the black sherpa but I have so many jackets. But it’s a good deal and hard to pass up
I’ll say the one annoying thing is that the hood buttons can be finicky and undo themselves on a whim, so I mostly use it hoodless
