thoughts on proportions / rule of thirds?
I’ve been seeing many more yt influencers talk about the rule of thirds:
- upper takes up a third of the overall height, with pants/shoes taking bottom 2/3. Example is tucked in shirt into high rise pants
- or upper takes up 2/3 and bottom takes up 1/3. Example is wearing long coat
- this is contrary to any other height ratio that doesn’t follow this rule, such as 50/50 top/bottom
My thoughts are i see the aesthetically pleasing side of following this rule and try to incorporate it into my fits, but at the same time, i feel like it’s gotten to the point where it’s hard to pick out pieces or wear clothes in a certain way. For example, mid-length jackets seem too long and give that 50/50 look especially when viewed from behind, and button up shirts when worn untucked can give a 50/50 look .
I feel like i may be too rigid about this rule but I still see designers appear to design clothes that don’t suit this rule - Uniqlo U FW23 broadcloth shirt has a split hem that makes it look designed for wearing untucked but is so long it drapes over my whole booty (6’ for reference).
but wanted to get some thoughts by the community on the rule. do you follow it strictly or do you understand the rules enough to intentionally break them?
