Thanks. D'oh ... whenever I checked travel times in Google maps the public transportation was slow and the taxis fast. Then I realized I was doing this in the States and it was the middle of the night in London. Setting the time to midday and of course the tube is the logical choice.
I still would like to know if there are enough classically styled suits and sports coats there but it sounds like a worthwhile trip anyway. Man does not live by museums alone.

Any recommendations for dress shoes like this? the cheaper the better
Those shoes go with very little in the way of suiting and are totally wrong for black suit. Black is very limiting and the only color shoes that look right with a black suit are black ones.

Yes to all the above, but know too that Saks Off Fifth used to sell Made in Italy suits with Zegna fabric. They're decent bargain suits but were never high end.

It just doesn't fit the way a double breasted jacket should fit. Along with the shoulder problem I think it's just too big for you.

where to find light grey trousers like these
Gray wool flannel trousers are thick on the ground. (The second pair look beige to me, though.) eBay is full of them, usually for cheap. I paid like $25 for some lovely Canali trousers.

Storing wool/cashmere to avoid moths
I assume you're washing or dry cleaning them first, which is essential. Don't put moth traps in but cedar or the old fashioned moth balls work (the smell of the latter is awful though).

Does it make sense to use a weekender bag for air travel?
That's one reason I travel in a teba these days. My wife has a balance handicap so I carry my clothes in a backpack and put hers in a wheely bag.
