Navigating Dress Codes - Topic of the day 7/14/24
was about to say this. I used to be into historical reenactment and I don’t have an issue with groups being serious about enforcing historical adequacy in their costumes (and once you go outside of civil war reenactors there’s a lot of weird queer people, so not many will bat an eye at someone messing with gender. It’s not like there’s not a ton of historic evidence of cross dressing) but that’s precisely because you’re choosing to go play grown up dress up with your free time and you could do anything else

Navigating Dress Codes - Topic of the day 7/14/24
yeah ^^^ i think most schools i’ve come across get it wrong but the ones that are like “everyone must wear chinos and our t shirt or polo every day” are at least being consistent. i saw a video of a school in india that defied tradition by just having shorts and a T shirt for all the kids and that seemed cute and practical to me. i nearly went on an exchange year to japan in high school (cancelled by covid) and they were gonna make me either go full transition or completely back into girlmode

As a nonbinary person I think strongly gendered dress codes, which so many are, are evil. I also used to take the bus home at the same stop that picked up a bunch of private school kids and not only did it make gender nonconforming kids have a shit time, it was also utterly ineffective at preventing class based bullying

The Capsule Wardrobe - Topic of the day 7/9/24
I wouldn't say I'm a streetwear person but I don't wear blazers or my formal shoes often and I feel bad for "neglecting" them by letting them sit in my closet. i just don't feel like it's really "me" when i try to style them into my normal wardrobe unfortunately

I think it's good to be prepared for a formal event where not being dressed up would be seen as disrespectful, but there's a lot of formal stuff that's not a real part of my wardrobe & I don't wear outside those contexts

I think it's a bit like the visualization step of the konmari cleanup process? Like, there's nobody who can determine what'll spark joy in your wardrobe for you

(I hope I've back read thoroughly enough to not be repeating others' points) I feel like capsules can be a useful concept for figuring out how to dress at first. Like, if you think you need to buy 15 sweaters before you can explore your "ideal" style then you're gonna be spending way too much money and you might not like it in the end. You'll be better served by trying to figure out how to make a lot of combinations with a little bit of clothing, and then you can see if you actually like that experiment and what you want to keep doing and what you want to drop. It's also good to think about versatility that way to avoid buying things that are legit cool but don't work well with your wardrobe. I feel like I see capsules a lot in womenswear especially, which makes sense because the idea that you need 500 gajillion different outfits is really powerful in that space, and reinforcing that you don't need that to be stylish (nobody said Audrey Hepburn was an outfit repeater for wearing ballet flats and high waisted capris a lot) is important. You don't need to spend absurd amounts of money or dedicate a lot of space to clothing to dress well, and being deliberate pays off. For me, I think of it as similar to doing a color theory exercise with my painting. I enjoy packing for a trip and figuring out how to be absolutely perfect in every possible combination, but I wouldn't want to make it my whole closet.

Hair 💇♂
I used to really hate having straight hair, because I couldn’t ever get it to do all the slightly wavy fluffy styles i liked, but eventually i stopped trying to do those styles and just let it be spiky and found a style that worked with it & now I don’t mind it at all. I just had to stop fighting it… Considering how common straight hair is it’s very annoying how rare good haircut inspiration images for it are

Hair 💇♂
if that’s not rhetorical, actually a lot of things. hairstyles that require a lot of maintenance convey meticulousness and rigidity, whereas hair that requires less styling looks dynamic, and a haircut that looks like you let your hair grow out seems casual and laid-back. if you’re not vibing with the long hair as it is, you can style it differently (half up/half down, barrettes, a ponytail or a braid, bun or claw clip, etc) and see if any of those gives you hints as to what looks good on your face. the 12pell barbershop instagram also has some useful videos to demonstrate places you could go with the length you currently have if you’re interested in a cut

Any cloths repair experts?
the thing about a scarf is that it’s kind of perpetually moving, mending a small rip in the front of a shirt is a lot more complicated simply because it will always be getting seen when you’re wearing that shirt. if you feel reallly extra you could needle felt over the repair but i wouldn’t worry about just stitching it back up again

solid watch under 100 USD?
I had a timex weekender for a while and it was decent, but the movement is VERY loud. Like, it bothered my roommate across the room when I took it off at night type of loud. Secondhand is also an option to get something that would be over your budget normally

which wool sweater will keep me the warmest?
The warmest sweater I have was felted by the previous owner and I also can only wear it during winter. When possible I try to just get anything made with wool/actual animal fiber.

Tailor Recommendations Bay Area
I have some very basic tailoring skills, because my pants size is somewhere around 29x28 and usually I have to get 30x30s. Learning to hem pants is the easiest, waistband is complicated (especially on edges like the seams on jeans), and anything involving shoulders is advanced placement. I learned by developing sewing skills first and then trying to follow tutorials specific to tailoring. If you want to be really good at it, you’ll need to learn from a professional. It’s also quite hard to pin garments up on your own body, especially torso.

Tailor Recommendations Bay Area
^^ He mentioned one tailor he uses in his most recent blog post (the part about commissioning a polo coat) but Steed is a bespoke tailor from the UK that travels to SF 3x per year, so definitely not the most convenient.
