Eddie Bauer
Starting an Eddie Bauer thread! I actually used to work at an Eddie Bauer Outlet back in the early 2000s. Had no appreciation of the brand’s history at the time that’s for sure. Mostly focused on hiding the regular retail Gore Tex jackets back in the stockroom so I could then buy later for an extra 50% off the already marked down price. My whole family was outfitted in some sweet jackets that’s for sure! Anyway, I’ve had a lot of fun this week researching vintage Eddie Bauer outerwear. The Skyliner quilted down jacket, the Yukon jacket with the fur collar, and the Kara Koram parka are all time greats. Seem to have inspired so many other brands and items over time. The vintage early stuff seems to be pretty well picked over on ebay (and thus properly priced for resell to the collector market), but I’ve set up some searches in hopes of snagging a reasonably priced vintage piece eventually.

Safari Jackets: What brands to look for vintage?
I'm interested in getting a safari jacket, preferably in linen or a linen blend, though a lightweight cotton would probably also work. There are over 2,800 listings for pre-owned safari jackets on eBay just within the US, so I'm not sure where to start my search. What brands would you recommend for a nice, high-quality vintage one?

Favorite Classic Corduroy Pants?
What are you favorite classic corduroy pants? I have a nice pair of J.Crew 770 five-pocket corduroy pants I got via eBay, but I'm hoping to get something more classic for a second pair. I'm in the US and willing to spend up to ~$200 for a new pair or <$100 for a used pair. Preferences - Flat front, not pleated - Wider wale (i.e. 8-12 wale) - Classic fit, so not too slim, but not relaxed/baggy - Prefer to not have a permanent crease, so more of a casual pant style than a trouser style Budget - Used: <$100 via eBay - New: Up to ~$200, though would prefer <$150 Things I'm considering J.Crew Classic 10-Wale Corduroy Pant (https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens/categories/clothing/pants-and-chinos/corduroy/CB491) - These look pretty good at $118, but I don't love the colors that much and they are not currently on any discount. I typically try to get at least 40% off J.Crew MSRP. Freenote Cloth Deck Pant Corduroy (https://freenotecloth.com/products/deck-pant-olive-corduroy) - I love Freenote, and their Deck Pants fit me great, but these are $300 and not on sale anywhere. RRL Indigo Corduroy Pant (https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-clothing-pants/indigo-corduroy-pant/648399.html) - These are $445, but I can get for 50% via my sister in law who works for RRL PRL Stretch Straight Fit Corduroy Pant (https://www.ralphlauren.com/men-clothing-pants/stretch-straight-fit-corduroy-pant/625701.html) - These are $125, and I can get for 50%, but I'd be concerned about quality frankly. I also looked at Todd Snyder and Spier & Mackay, but didn't see what I was looking for. Let me know if you've got any ideas. Thanks!

Setting a monthly clothing budget?
Has anyone had success setting a monthly clothing purchase budget and sticking to it? My spending has become a bit of a "problem" over the last 4-5 months, so my therapist is suggesting I set a hard monthly budget and use that to guide all purchase decisions. I just did the terrifying job of adding up what I've spent in total over the last year. Not fun! I probably need to spend 3-4x less than what I've been averaging... I was starting from zero a year ago, so thankfully my actual "need" is much lower now that I've built up a solid wardrobe. But my taste and standards and knowledge have increased over the last 12 months, so I've been targeting nicer stuff recently. And I would love to replace a lot of the "fine" items with "good" and "great" examples, but I guess I need to slow that process way down. I'm finding that hard now that I really know the difference between "fine" and "great"! Let me know if anyone has any similar experience and/or recommendations.

Waxed Barbour jacket target discount?
What’s a good target price for a NWT Barbour waxed jacket? There’s a sale near me where they have both the Bedale & Beaufort for 50% off, $400 -> $200. Want to know if that is “steal” territory or happens regularly. Colors available are the classic Sage & Olive, and I believe they have my size in stock. Though I plan to try on in person for sizing given the recommendations I’ve seen in the various guides. Thanks for the help!

I have the opportunity to buy anything I want from RRL/PRL/RLPL at 50% off - what should I get?
I have a relative that works at Ralph Lauren. They are able to purchase RRL, PRL, or RLPL items for 50% off full price an 40% off sale price. I’ve been offered to give them a list of things I’d like to buy using the discount. What would you get if you were in my situation? General Notes - Initial Budget (After Discount): ~$1,000 - Current Wardrobe: J.Crew, Wallace & Barnes, Faherty, and a few other similar brands; mostly purchased via eBay over last 6 months - Current Style: Pretty much basic bastard, with a touch of surfer, western, outdoorsy, & preppy at times Ralph Lauren Notes - I’m not really into logos, so would prefer to avoid the Polo logo where possible - I love the RRL style, but have avoided the brand since it typically goes for such an unreasonable premium for what it is. - RLPL stuff looks great and seems very luxurious, but I probably wouldn’t wear most of the items to justify the investment, even with the discount Clothing Needs - Not many specific needs right now; I’ve been able to build up a really solid wardrobe of items via eBay and closet is pretty full - Would happily upgrade to something better, more stylish, or very unique where makes sense (e.g. upgrade from a basic J.Crew shawl collar cardigan to an RRL cashmere one) Thanks!
