Got this vintage blazer for a wedding. Does it pair well with black trousers?
Yeah it seems good. (In the future, just standing neutrally with your hands at your sides makes it easier to judge the fit, even if it’s not the most natural pose)

See if they have a “long” or “tall” size. It might be labeled with an L or T after the chest size

paper found in pocket of deadstock poly flares
Not sure but I find these all the time in thrifted suit jackets, sometimes still attached, sometimes loose. I assume it’s something to help keep track of things during production

The sleeves definitely need to come down, but unfortunately the whole jacket just looks too small imo

How long did your wardrobe take to catch fire
I flipped my entire wardrobe in less than 10 months. I wasn’t intending to, but the combination of joining this server at a time when I was going through a bunch of personal changes (divorce, moving out of state, etc) put everything into hyperdrive. I hardly recognize my clothes from a year ago. I wouldn’t say my wardrobe is killer now, but at least I wear clothes that I appreciate and I enjoy getting dressed. That’s never really been true until last summer

Regarding the variation in shirting measurements the best first step is to measure a SHIRT that fits you best. Tagged size variations are still annoying but sticking to actual garment measurements will help

If you’re talking sweatshirts or something similar you can look for “tall” or “long” sizes

If you’re talking about button down shirts, you can find them in separate neck and sleeve measurements. I wear a 16-36, which is less common but still findable. Knowing your measurements will help a ton.

Spier & Mackay suit fit check
Do you have pics of the 42R? This seems pretty snug, but not terrible. Can you comfortably move around? Hug someone? Raise your foot up onto a chair? If it’s constricting I’d size up. Though you’ll definitely, definitely need a longer jacket, as beans said.

What makes a good suit?
I’ve been working this over in my head recently too because I thrift a lot of my tailoring, so i end up with pretty mainstream stuff that looks like (and was) someone’s old business attire. I try to mix it up by wearing casual shirts underneath or whatever, but the cuts are just really bland. I keep my eye out for big lapels, low gorges, interesting muted colors or anything else to make it not look like a boring business suit.

What makes a good suit?
“Good” vs “bad” is inherently going to involve considering trends, but I agree with oman that it’s mostly about intention. Big, drapey fit is in, but this fit from last week still crushes: https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1356400448986288250

Cocktail Attire
I’d recommend at least a jacket. If it’s meant as traditional cocktail attire that would at least be a jacket, dress shirt and tie. Grey wool jacket sounds the most appropriate, but also dress codes have gotten more and more lax in my experience, so you might not be out of place with any jacket and tie. You can always check with the host!

Suit Suggestions Calgary Canada
Agree with raisin about not jumping in to MTM. A lot of the questions you have are more personal preference, so it would probably help to just go try on a bunch of stuff and see what you like. I can’t help you with where to do that in Calgary, but I think that’s the move. Scroll through waywt looking for suits, check out lookbooks from different companies or even this inspo zeo just posted https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1117803378521673768/1355590575943979040. If you see something you like we can help you with how you describe it when you go shopping

How do I wear this tie casually?
I should clarify that I mean “fine” relative to the fits that you’ll eventually get off with this thing. For now, remember that the tie is sick, wearing it to a galaxy lecture is a good bit, and you’ll look put together and more interesting than the majority of people there. Have fun!

And then if you’re into it, start looking into shirt jackets or chore coats or whatever you like now that you know you’d probably wear it if you had it
