How do I wear this tie casually?

I love wearing ties, but I dont do it nearly enough. I have a solidly sized tie collection and a good oppertunity to start. This wednesday I have a reading/lecture/workshop about space and the galaxy. There will be about 15-25 people there, I know exactly 1 guy. Dress is pretty casual, mostly jeans. I find it hard to match ties with jeans, I know a 4 hand but that's not even close to a good start. I have plenty of button down shirts in plenty of colours, but the rest of the outfit is still a mystery.

I've browsed his pictures for 5 seconds, love his style the problem is that I dont own any overshirts, that makes it harder trust me its in the plans, but not yet

I think the key to dressing down a tie is to wear anything that’s not a blazer, chore coats or jean jackets can work, over shirts can work

theres lots of casual jacket that can work over a tie, doesnt have to be an overshirt

The tie is real cute btw

It can help a lil but honestly wide ties can be dressed down too, they’re just a bit more prominent That art fit on the left in oman’s post is real wide

ngl looking at artvandelayimportings fits make me scared hes pretty good at this at fashion I was just gonna rock it with some jeans and a cord button down clearly double corduroy shirt but one of the two is open is the route here /s this entire thing is just telling me to buy a leather coat and overshirts ( I was gonna do both in the near future anywy)

Both good options but def you can do a tie with plenty of things, I bet you have something in your closet you could try it with already. If you were gonna buy that stuff anyway tho more power to ya

probably not before the lecture which is when I do need a fit to wear, might let it stew for a day

It doesn’t need to be an overshirt it can be literally any type of jacket

one thing to think about is fit, if its just a shirt and tie a looser shirt will feel more casual as well as making the tie knot a little not perfect, if its super tight to your neck it can feel too formal imo

unbuttoning 1 of the 2 buttons on my button down if only I had a cargo pant cargos corduroy tie and jacket and im there what about a full zip cardigan or a full zip hoodie?

Tie and cardigan is classic tryhard is all in your head. If the fit hits it hits. And if it doesn’t it’s fun trying anyway!

yeah true totally right trying is fun

I’ve been trying to wear ties with pretty much everything this winter. I don’t have the fit pics to prove it, but cardigans, track zip-ups, big shirts that aren’t technically over shirts, every light jacket that I own, they can all work

fuck yeah I love that go you big hype

see thats fire good reminder to me too btw, I want to do more wayt but I work in fashion retail so most of my time is spent in the same 15 items for 6 months and you can only shuffle those around so much before you've seen it all

Sounds like it’s time for a tie to mix it up!

exactly! I work in a mostly business casual store so we dont sell ties, but I had a convo with a couple colleagues from other locations about trying it just need to grab an overshirt

I’m not loving this particular option, I pref things with a bit more structure, the drawstrings/zipper details distract a bit from the tie too The rest of the fit is great tho

agree, i like the base. the hoodie is ok, but i dont love it

I think theres sort of 2 takes here, one is that this is fine and casual and its good as an option if not a bit too blue. the second is that yeah it could be better with a less distracting hoodie

agree w/ this it's a bit difficult to decipher whether it's intentional or if you were an office worker who had to throw a hoodie on to run an errand at first glance bc of the contrast I'd note that in arts original pics the tie acts as a statement piece since it heavy contrasts with the rest of the outfit palette

I'm not really a jacket kinda guy normally so I'm going to have to see what I have that still fits and could be better a good point, dunno if im quite there yet. I was contemplating both orange and red but idk if I have the bravery to go there lmao

I could see those working actually :caught: a deep red could help the black stand out more against the shirt
Hyort
HyortOP2mo ago
idk if its deep enough but might as well try since I have time to burn anyway green chinos would be too smart but man that would be sick with the orange and the tie

Too smart? Pshaw Try it anyway
Hyort
HyortOP2mo ago
lmao yeah oh nooo I meant red or orange shirtsm but then I'd need a lighter jean and lighter jacket option for the red
Hyort
HyortOP2mo ago
theres a single other jacket I have that doesnt have a pattern or embroidery and its also a hoodie but its black and I have also not worn it for 2 years

probably doing a lighter jean option

Yeah i mean I don’t love this but it’s better than the drawstring one IMO. If you can manage it might be good to shop around for another coat option.

I agree with everyone else; it’s fine but not great. However, the event is Wednesday, and if it’s either this fit or ditching the tie altogether, I say wear it. And then if you’re into it, start looking into shirt jackets or chore coats or whatever you like now that you know you’d probably wear it if you had it I should clarify that I mean “fine” relative to the fits that you’ll eventually get off with this thing. For now, remember that the tie is sick, wearing it to a galaxy lecture is a good bit, and you’ll look put together and more interesting than the majority of people there. Have fun!
