The two filaments I used both have the same temp specs: 190-220C.

Another thing to remember is that it was going through the filament sensor and triggering it when it would start having problems which leads me to believe that there is inconsistent PULLING of the filament. (Sensor is on the frame and run through a PTFE tube to the print head). I could understand if the filament is bad that it could cause inconsistent extrusion but what would cause it to keep it from feeding consistently? Is there a property of the filament that could cause it to behave weirdly?

Printed another with the same gcode and the original Overture PLA and it failed. I dried it for 6+ hours. Not sure what’s happening with that spool. Any more ideas from the hivemind?

I tried another PLA with the exact same gcode and got a decent print. Not sure why. I’ve been using the Overture PLA for a while and haven’t had anything like this happen before and I don’t usually dry it. Maybe with the changing of the seasons in the Midwest US had an effect on it. I’ll try really drying the Overture PLA and try again. Let me know if anyone has any other ideas to try to narrow down the cause so I can prevent it in the future.

I haven’t yet because it’s a bit inconsistent and a different filament won’t tell me what the original problem was. I get it though. I’ll give it a shot and let you know. Could it be something with my extruder? Something mechanically wrong?

That’s what I’ve been narrowing down. I was using a BTT SFS 2.0 filament sensor and initially blamed it for pausing my prints. I’ve since run filament directly into the extruder and still have the same problem.

I had already done all those steps. My em is about .93. If it were something like em, wouldn’t it have gaps all over and not just later in the print? Some of those prints went quite a while before having any issues. So how would em affect that? Honest question.

I see in your config that your section header has a capital 'C'. ie
[Cam 1]
instead of [cam 1]
. Not sure if it's case-sensitive. I would also remove the new line between the header and mode
just to be safe. It probably doesn't matter but still.7 replies

Started with:
Filament dryer (Fixdry NT2) -> PTFE -> BTT Filament Sensor 2.0 -> PTFE -> LGX Lite
Calibrated PA, temp, flow ratio, retraction
Performance mode on
Currently at:
Orca stock defaults for RatRig vCore 3, Generic PLA, 0.2
Things I've tried:
- Turning performance mode off
- Reset RatOS 2.1 to factory defaults
- Remove anything between extruder and filament (tubes, filament sensor, dryer) and running filament directly into the extruder
- Raise and lower filament temperature
- Drying filament
- Replace PTFE hotend tube and made sure length is correct (was using Capricorn tube with 2mm inner diameter, but currently using generic PTFE 2mm inner diameter after thinking it was 3mm ID but just measured and discovered it is only 2mm)
- Cleaned hotend for clogs. Heat hotend to 190, let cool to 120 then pull filament. Really seems to clean it out well.

MCU Protocol Error
There was another thread about it where miklschmidt said to run this script on the pi:
~/printer_data/config/RatOS/scripts/ratos-update.sh
I think I had to sudo
it, but I got the MCU to boot after running the script and reboot. Thought I would add this here to see if it helped @guesswhatsthisparlor. The post thread I mentioned is here: https://discord.com/channels/582187371529764864/1265727640216539156. Thanks everyone for all your help!17 replies

MCU Protocol Error
I'm having the exact same error installing 2.1. I did a clean install on my sdcard. I've tried updating the Octopus 1.1 via automatic and DFU in the setup and ended up with the same error. Re: following instructions....Are you referring to updating the firmware or was there something else? I'm not working on the beacon just yet because i thought updating the firmware was done via the plugin after I can get the MCU to boot properly. Any further thoughts?

Strange smell after enabling performance mode on steppers
I've since replaced the inlet and switch both rated to 20 amps. I'd already been using 14AWG for the 120v wiring. I've added a 20A breaker and monitor as well. The house will trip before that does and everything is rated well enough to handle what I can provide it so I think I'm good now. Thanks again, everyone.

You can even see in one of the pictures the fuse is still intact.

Strange smell after enabling performance mode on steppers
I’m in the US so it’s 120v. I have no idea why the fuse didn’t blow. I’ve gone back to my old config with a spare switch/inlet and salvaged the 10amp fuse from the melted one since it shipped with a 5amp fuse for some reason. 🤷🏻♂️

Strange smell after enabling performance mode on steppers
The amps I measured from the bed were 9-9.5 amps. Overall draw was about 10.5. Thought it’d be higher considering the drivers are set up to draw 1.1amps each unless I’m reading the config wrong. The performance setting bumps them up to 1.6amps which is why it melted. Didn’t kill the fuse though. I’ll be upgrading to a C20 inlet with a 15amp breaker shortly. That should be able to tolerate anything I should be throwing at it.
