Regular surface distortion pattern towards end of larger first layers VC4
The last image is from my home assistant that stores the variables. The graph contains the temperature data from the cold nozzle and the heated bed, together with the x and y movements. The heightmaps timings correlate with the movements visible in the graph. The nozzle was located at "homed" x200, y200, z15 during the entire test, except during the movements.
I think the images show that there is a clear improvement compared to my previous test which used the original aluminum extrusions (see a few posts up from this, Im blocked from linking to my own posts apparently..). The results aren't perfect. I can see a difference between 25 minutes and 105 minutes of heating at 100 degrees. Could maybe be the other axis with its aluminum and steel sandwich which I guess will twist slightly as well.

first layer keeps getting worse while it’s printing
Heat soak is the key here.
I have ordered a toro3d titanium tube to replace the 20x20 aluminum extrusion for the gantry, the issue is apparently that the linear rail is made of steel. This creates warping due to different thermal expansion factors in the materials for the steel linear rail vs. aluminum extrusion which stands directly above the heat source (bed). So it warps and bends for a long time.
Until it has arrived my only option is to heat soak the printer for a whole hour. This really sucks as a solution but it's a must for me. I turn on the bed @ 100 degrees celcius manually and leave the hotend off.
You can prove this yourself by creating height maps every 10 minutes or so for 1 hour while bed is on 100 degrees celsius. When the warping stops, it is ready
These are my settings related to the issue
variable_start_print_park_in: "center" # Important for heating the gantry most effectively, in the middle of the print area
variable_bed_heat_soak_time: 0 # I do this manually to avoid having to wait a whole hour for each print
variable_hotend_heat_soak_time: 300 # Heat soak the hotend for 300 seconds before print starts
variable_beacon_scan_compensation_enable: True

Stock aluminum profile. Titanium is soon here.
I'll do the same test after installing the titanium.

I have high confidence in it solving gantry bowing! I'll report back with the results once it's installed and tested.

Norway 🙂 thanks for the tip. I managed to get one from Toro3d so it's solved and titanium tube is on the way. Really hope this fixes the bowing and reduces the time required for heat soaking.

Sounds like that might be a bit troublesome for my vc4 400. But having to do 25 minutes of heat soaking to be able to run a test print is seriously eating away at my patience 🥲 And it doesn't really work anyway. I guess I have to try this out.

you did this on a 300? Im having this issue on my vc4 400 and Im gonna buy the toro tube, but currently its not in stock so Im thinking Im gonna try without the extrusion. Did you use short 20x20 alu extrusions to fasten the linear rail, or is the linear rail fastened another way?

First layer problem
@savh tyvm, that seems to immediately solve the issue with inconsistent z-height at start.
Still having the issue with ripples/waves in the print after a little while, but at least the start of the print is correct now. Looks awful. I haven't tuned the material yet though so I'll tune EM, pressure advanced etc then report back.

I have a similar issue.
This is the relevant printer.cfg-section
As you can see I have commented out bed_heat_soak, I'm running that manually before each print for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Another weird issue I have is that the initial z height differs somewhat in most prints. I have to adjust it at the start, and it becomes perfect, then after a while it starts with the same waves as OP showed. Almost seems like it isn't using the bed mesh.
It scans the relevant bed area before each print, so I believe @boinappi suggestion is not relevant?
Printer is a vcore 4 400, enclosed.
