The only people who get a pass for quarter zips are cyclists
I like polos and polo sweaters tbh
But only in interesting fabrics and cuts
I don’t hate a 50s/60s style knit polo, but can’t say i like any more than that
hell yeah i like massively big pullover type things with big texture and I feel I have no risk of looking like a fin tech guy. And if someone thinks im a fin bro thats hilarious
I own a polo shirt but honestly rarely have a reason to wear it.
and I AM in fintech
I enjoy a pullover but definitely not those tight fitting ones that seem increasingly common

Every time I’ve tried on a quarter zip I look like I’m in a Lands End catalogue
I got this one awhile back and enjoy it

Actually I’m realizing I just wore one yesterday, but it had a humongous collar so it felt a little different
Zipper polos / quarter zips are an abomination against humanity
Or I’m just a zipper hater
Both can be true
the secret is to have a cool one and to also be cool
I feel like the trauma of silicon valley techbros has created an inescapable aversion for quarter zips thats only really prominent in the US
When I came here I was surprised people hated them so much
I think pullover/popover shirts and quarter-zip shirts can be pretty cool
like in that old timey workwear way
Slouchy sweatshirt ones with a collar have been having a small moment imo. Abercrombie sells knit zips that aren't corpo-coded. Story MFG has a sweatshirt one as does Wythe and I kinda like them in a cropped and slouchy cut
Are you saying quarter zips are fine outside the US?
no
:bloberm:
We also have tech bros in the UK
:why_dissolve:
It's me I'm techbros
Hi techbros
/jk :linkHeart:
Just wear your jammies

I’ll be honest I’ll honest I hate that sticker
it is pretty reductive
Despite all the memes on Quarter Zips and Patagonia Vests - I haven't figured out a better/ more acceptable indoor layer for office
a sweater
Anyone know any thicker ones similar to this? Most I find are too thin and I can't really wear by themselves on top of a t-shirt in fall.

Run hot half the time - and have been wearing Full Zips Cardigans till date for convenience.
A thinner sweater
lol
good point
Long sleeve polos with button down collars cause I'm 2012 menswearpilled
I remember Muji used to carry polos with button down collars
I went down a vintage wool cycling jersey rabbit hole recently. they look so cool
they give big Tory energy to me
Polos as a dressed up shirt always feel simultaneously stuffy and half-ass to me. But loose polos in skate/streetwear are good

I’m sure there are better photos but you get the idea
the 1st shot is insane

i don't think polos have ever worked for me
I wore them as a teenager all the time—but like, oversized with big pants and a backwards hat. As an adult I don’t think I’ve ever owned one by choice
Perhaps a stylistic difference, but I don't get the polo/quarter zip hate. Relatively unexciting I suppose, but that's about the worst I can say. My impression is they do walk a fine line by really being suited for casual wear but having recently been elevated to business attire. Perhaps that is the issue?
I like knit/sweater polos and have one pique polo I like. I love thick slightly oversized long sleeve polos & rugby shirts in natural materials for casual wear. I am with the consensus that 99% of quarter zips are a no go. I have a soft spot for crazy colored Patagonia synchilla style fleeces though. I wear a synthetic golf polo 2-3x/year when I golf, and I am fine looking like a frumpy dad during the most fuddy duddy activity in the world.
For the record, I have one polo and no quarter zips (besides some workout clothes I don't consider "fashionable" by any stretch of the imagination) so it's not like I love them. Just don't get the hate.
I think to me the issue isn’t necessarily the quarter zip, but the finance bro’s that tend to be in them… and they just don’t quite fit my style haha
I’ve not seen very many that make me think “damn i quite like that, i can see myself wearing it”, not got a better explanation than that ngl haha
quarter zips are adorable

polo shirts are adorable

glad we were able to conclude this discussion
me whenever u post

when on a silly little bear, agreed
me whenever u post😴
They definitely have a time and place, though said time and place is ideally not near me
I mean....fair enough if that's the case. Is that how others see it too? Or is this more something about the actual article of clothing separated from its social connotations as being objectively ugly/bad? I realize divorcing the clothes from its social connotations may be difficult as they are inherently entangled but I do find it interesting in the academic sense. Likely relevant to many things in this space...
I think it’s a bit of both. I generally think quarterzips are dull, not necessarily objectively bad or ugly but just not something I enjoy. definitely influenced by social connotations
"Dull" is darn tough to argue and suspected that might be the case.
I have some polos and quarter zips. I never wear them anymore. Thanks, MFAD!
Barging in to the discussion - it seems to me it's mostly social connotations.
Hard to argue a Crew Neck Sweater is not dull - but Quarter Zip is
you guys ever wear like a t-shirt?
exactly
Quarter zip dull
Crew neck not
:gigachad:
Also, are finance bros under 40 still actually wearing these things? It feels like it is past its prime even in that circle.
Can’t say I keep up on finance bros , now that you mention it
Seen over 40 folks wear them in banks. But never in Tech firms I worked previously.
Hate to admit it, but I actually work in finance, but I am very far removed from the NY finance bro scene that style was originally associated with
In my case finance > tech > finance
not in NY - so whatever you wear - it won't come off as "midtown uniform"
since not as many folks are wearing any of the meme'd stuff (q-zips, vests etc.)
My brother is in the NY scene, and I would say most of his friends dress like a Todd Snyder catalogue
although do come across a few folks cosplaying with loafers + barbour for a month or so
I think the true douchey finance bro meme is Loro Piana shoes at this point
+ some of the Cashmere stuff Chamath shows off
although not necessarily finance bro
from Loro Piana as well
God, I hate Chamath so much, but don't want to derail the chat with an even more irrelevant rant
haha, let's agree not to extend it further
Nah you’re good go for it
Sincerely
The two words "douche" + "Loro Piana" - couldn't think of anyone better than Chamath
He is a blatant fraudster & con man, and him getting away with it emboldened others to do the same. Have been on calls marketing his SPACs where they didnt even pretend the company had a chance to make money. It was literally all about how much hype the celebrities they had on the management team could generate with retail investors once it was publicly traded. That people couldn't see through his & Elon's facade of bullshit has driven me crazy for ages. I wish I hadn't been proven so correct on Elon.
Chamath is singlehandedly the one who started what eventually got us to Hawk Tuah marketing shitcoins
And yet - we have another frenzy in the form of memecoins
Beat you to it
Yes
on Elon - I find him to be a mixed bag - lots of good stuff where he places himself at the center of
mainly on industrial growth side
I think the fact that the qzip totd has devolved into bullshit finance chatter really sums it all up
I knew this would derail haha. Lets leave it at that
but then - culture and politics is where he might end up doing more harm than good (I hope not)
thank you for the intervention, good sir
On the record, I tried to drop it and was egged on
nah you're good go for it
Real mixed bag

you got an example of any good stuff
lmfao this topic was a mistake
i hate how all the snowflakes here shit on his dedication to free speech
he's bringing such a big audience back to twitter for ad revenue and they can't even understand it
Stay tuned for tomorrow's topic...MAGA hat styling! Promise the discussion will remain highly focused and entirely apolitical.🤣
Lol - a picture worth a thousand words.
I’m a huge fan of knit polos, long leave and short sleeve, but the short sleeves have to have a slight cuff to it
I especially love ribbed short sleeve polo shirts, though good ones are almost impossible to find for me
These just work for so many situations
Most knit polos I like don’t have buttons, though certain pieces with buttons look nice to me
And I could've chosen better words than these
Anyone have any experience with Quince? I see a ton of red flags based on ad bombardment and traditional retail price crossed out, but the 100% cotton on this polo has me interested.
100% Organic Cotton Fisherman Polo Sweater
Your favorite 100% Organic Cotton Fisherman Crew Sweater now available as a polo sweater. Detailed with fisherman rib texture throughout, the sweater features a subtle collar and a three-button placket that adds a touch of polished style. Made of 100% org
Quince is the new everlane
literally
thats a nice url you've got there
100% cotton should not be the selling point
anyways, back on topic. I know 18east is clowned on a bit here, but I enjoy this quarter button I have from them

nice embroidery details
Very random clothing newb aside re the quince link above. It says raglan sleeves under details. Those 100% do not look like raglan sleeves to me. Is the description wrong? Do I not know what raglan sleeves are? Totally open to the latter....
indeed
Wool is itchy af, and I do like the design. I assumed the URL would just minimize for the thumbnail. Discord should get on that.
Judging by my office I go into thrice a year and calls I'm on, very yes
See but this is nice though it's a functional garment that makes sense, unlike PRL quarter zip under a patagonia gilet for the office fits
If I ever wear a q zip go ahead and chuck me off a bridge
I’m unfortunately wearing one right now
I resent these but they’re so easy to just grab in the morning and put on
How’s Bitcoin doing
Interesting. I was thinking it might be similar to when popped collars were still associated with preppy frat bros 20 years after the last person popped their collar.
Workweary popovers can be good. I love this one from The Rite Stuff
