Sportswear in Fashion - Topic of the day 7/16/24
How do you feel about the resurgence of sports jerseys appearing in fashion? How do you find balance between wearing sportswear and not looking like you think you're on the team? Are there certain types of jerseys that work better than others?

those brasil baby tees are gonna be the reason the ice caps r gone in 5 years
but its swag
continuing the conversation on dress codes, wearing sportswear should be illegal outside of playing sports and I will not elaborate
I carve out a specific exemption to me wearing yoga pants all the time because yoga is not a sport and yoga parts are hot, sexy, and cool
Yes, very reasonable and nuanced. š

I don't think of myself as a sportswear guy, but I don't hate people who are, or think they aren't "properly" dressed.
i wonder if jerseys will occupy the same niche of formality in a century that polo shirts do now
Also, even though I don't think of myself as wearing sportswear, I wear sneakers and gorp outerwear (Patagonia), which is absolutely sportswear according to intended function.
I mean, aren't LL Bean and Orvis, at their root, basically sportswear for WASPs?
less sarcastically I agree that the further mainstreaming of gorp and related stuff probably lends itself to broader acceptance of other more conspicuous sportswear in the rest of fashion
button downs were invented by polo players
its sportswear all the way down
/thread. Leo nailed it
similar energy but i've come around on these joints, they're cute
and even back in the day ppl were whining about the encroachment of sportswear into normal attire
four sport athlete
It's all sportswear. Double vents on a blazer were for riding on horseback.
I truly hope in 200 years people talk about the amount of midriff shown on football jerseys the way we talk about lapel width on sports coats.
name 4 sports
High heels were to keep your feet in the stirrups
i just associate this too much with like dead on arrival streetwear startups
every streetwear brand in existance bricks a cropped jersey
rite of passage
š
So, basically streetwear guys need OCBDs and blazers because they are sportswear.
I'M KIDDING.
Goated jersey is black midi x BCNR
Dressage is sportswear
Founder of Patagonia
God I haven't stopped dreaming of this since you first posted
once you get into the world of outdoor sports the definition of sportswear expands so much as to be nearly meaningless
arctwizzy shell jacket is sportswear
yeah I was talking about sports jerseys and apparel when I wrote this totd lmao
nearly no one has ever managed to do a good "off bike" cycling jersey
To actually add to the discussion
S Tier: Soccer Jersey
B Tier: Baseball and Hockey Jersey
D Tier: Basketball and Football Jersey
footsketball
the ALD cycling jersey is cool but unfortunately ruined by the brand logo
actually
Sportswear worn correctly
you can say that about all of their jerseys
I need that sweater vest. Is it sportswear though?
sportswear is anything you wear on the sport
I love and collect minor league baseball hats
it's a cycling jersey
Minor league hockey is good too
So many random mascots and logos
Everyone needs a Modesto nuts or Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp hat
Maybe a Fresno Tacos alternative logo
I remember when I was learning about MFA there was a great inspo album of fits with varsity jackets, cricket sweaters, and the like. Mostly Japanese, as I recall. Anyone else remember that?
Sportswear is cool. It kinda exists outside of the cultural context that i (and i assume a lot of us) grew up in so i dont have a super informed take on the matter
Worth pointing out that a ton of designers draw from it heavily. Rick owens especially
A lot of his classic designs are takes on 90s streetwear
Red Wings jersey inspo
Mostly posted for random collection of people
Venezia FC jerseys >>>> Any fashion brands attempts to make an inspired one
look to real sports teams for cool jerseys, look to brand lookbooks for how to style them
IDK I think the Venezia styling shots are pretty hard as well
speaking generally, but agree
FUCK
my local team just ripped the aime leon dore lookbook to promote this season's kit
Moto pants / cycling jerseys / vintage basketball jerseys are my fave sport wear related pieces
Itās literally just ald lmao
i guess technically i support it-
(but also that one is stolen valor just wearing a repro prl rugby shirt is insufficient)
hey if ALD are gonna do inspirtion from sports teams, only fair they do it back
for me the first image that comes to mind for this topic is a gammon in an England football shirt so uh
I think letterman jackets are really cool, maybe because they aren't very common here
This is an interesting thread
What about the olympic uniforms? Someone posted the Mongolian uniforms the other day, which are really pretty
I did some reddit archaeology and found this varsity jacket album from 2013: https://imgur.com/a/inspiration-album-varsity-jackets-jjjiy
That looks sick, ty
I think thatās a little different, itās basically formal wear thatās worn only for the ceremonyās iirc
The US one is a lil uhhh
I donāt like the giant polo logo

It was hated at the time but I have soft spot for the real Pistons jerseys from the 90s
This year has jeans
Idk for me it's chic people wearing like, Brazil or Barca jerseys š
Lately I've seen a lot of jerseys of countries in the Copa as part of sick outfits IRL
Letterman jackets for fashion depending on how they're done personally can feel a bit too far into posing as someone you're not and maybe don't want to look akin to, because people take high school/college sports seriously lol. I guess another example of how cultural context matters
I didn't watch sports growing up, so I feel strange wearing any kinda jersey
I've been floated the idea of making trivia team varsity jackets though and that'd be fuckin sick
I guess I'm very attached to the idea of sportswear like that as a commemoration of something
I can't quite fully separate the context from the piece itself and I'd prefer if those who are more interested in it have the opportunity to present themselves as such
big fan of olympics uniforms! the norwegian winter olympics had some pretty great looking jackets for their volunteers / staff
olympic branded clothes / sportswear are also so plentiful on ebay and the likes
the french usually also have some great looking uniforms
my excuse is usually that the item was gifted to me
Which is the True starter jacket? The satin bomber or the half zip pullover?
When it comes to jerseys/soccer shirts, the odd thing is the more of a fan you are, the more you won't wear something just because it looks good. I'm a diehard for a few teams and I don't care how good another team's jersey (or anything) looks, I won't touch it.
Luckily, the last few years have been pretty good to sports fans in terms of team-related gear, and it's fun to mix it up (tshirts that aren't ugly, sweaters that hit).
I'm mildly obsessed with some of the RL Yankees gear, but that's more like a collab than sportswear (outside of the everything-is-sportswear historical context).
I had a varsity letter for Academic Team. I always sort of wanted a jacket to piss off the football players, but I never got one. š
I've cooled off on varsity jackets recently but I think they're cool
I think if you're gonna wear one with patches and shit on it it's gotta be A) Not yours and B) from before the year 2000
So about cricket sweaters, they might be a little underappreciated for how much swag they have as the sportswear they are
I'd think the way to style one is with a big or even gone wild collar like cricketers used to but for example Jerrod from OCBD Blog prefers a T shirt and that works ig
swag levels are off the charts. I want a cricket sweater so badly.
Also, I've really enjoyed seeing how we took a broad view of "sportswear", and found the MFAD twist on it.
<serious>Really good TOTD.</serious>
<snark>Almost as good as dress codes.</snark>
Reflect on the feedback you were given in that thread instead of making cheeky jokes
Iām sorry cricket sweaters are not sportswear
This topic almost exclusively covers jerseys
not sportswear in the context of this totd
but as previously mentioned the term sportswear is pretty much meaningless because of how much it can encompass lmao
when someone says sportswear thatās immediately what I assume
A jersey or cap or something actually used in sports or the culture of it
Otherwise converses would be sportswear
Which theyāre clearly not
Cricket dont wear cricket sweaters in game
They don't in T20, they often do in the traditional forms of the game like for county, and test matches. Or just village cricket š
My first post was all cricketers some pretty well beloved ones among them
I grew up with ā½ like oxygen, but also cricket around
I see your point but I think cricket sweaters are like rugby shirts in that they've been contextually separated from their sport enough to no longer immediately read as sportswear the same way a baseball or soccer jersey would
and honestly baseball caps are approaching that territory for me if they aren't there already
True - especially in the US, I suspect cricket sweaters in prep/Ivy stuck around from when people actually played it more than baseball.
In India they're probably very very old fashioned upper class coded now (but also everyone has nostalgia for players who always wore whites with sweaters!)
Different cultures, again
isn't that the fate of a lot of sportswear?
Super obvious statement but I'm sure different baseball caps conjure up the sport more or less
I found the broad historical perspective interesting here, and don't feel the need to draw the line and say "XXX is no longer sportswear"
Old pics of bowlers in big sweater cool :LizeBigbrain:
I think when people refer to sportswear they refer to jerseys and not polo shirts.
Whatās a good hipster soccer/football jersey to get? Like no one popular. Ideally a level or two below the Premier league
I like the retro germany kit with the trefoil
which I understand doesn't really answer your question
The most hipster (scottish 6th division semi pro team)
there's a team in the italian fourth tier that had an insane one this season
newcastle jerseys when they still had the beer sponsor
Was cricket literally ever played more than baseball in the us
Hol on
Ok yes but before any of the modern style took hokd
I love the getafe burger king jersey because of how random of a sponsorship that was
holy shit lol
that's sick
Juve pink jeeps are sick as well
just tell me when to stop
can I retroactively spoiler this
check your local USL team!
mine
the most hipster one in europe would be FC St Pauli but the jerseys are ugly as shit
I feel like 10 (or maybe 14 lol) years ago there was a bit of a moment of American hipsters who don't follow soccer wearing jerseys for African and Asian countries. And there's lots of those that go hard.
the grail is the FC Clapton 'no pasaran' kit, insanely low level team put out this banger
ny cosmos pele jersey
Amazing
That is very hipster
Sorry I was in and out but these are all great. No USL team near me but I grew up near Detroit and I like that one. I live in Nashville but Iām not sure I like the NSC jersey
Would be interested to hear how attitudes to sportswear as casualwear differ between people with a slim or athletic build vs plus size people. As a fat person, I feel like wearing stuff that's overtly sportswear is kinda awkward unless it's something so mainstream that it's lost the sporty connotation - e.g. Vans skate shoes, retro basketball shoes, sweatshirts, etc
Also interesting to read about how football/soccer tops are perceived in different cultures. In the UK, it's very much associated with hooligans and footie tops are banned from various situations and are generally frowned upon outside of match day.
Like, attitudes from plus sized people or towards plus sized people? I'm a person who swings between plus sized fat and plus sized fit pretty regularly based on my lifting goals and my experience is: anything can look good on anyone.
ALD, mentioned prev in this thread, goes up to 2XL and does a great job in this exact category
converse are fairly popular shoes of people that do weightlifting
I wear rick shoes to the gym sometimes that doesnt make them sportswear though
Knee sleeves or a skintight competition singlet thoughā¦
why not?
Both, tbh! I think one influences the other.
I feel like rick draws from sportswear but is different enough to be distinct
Like its inspired by the pieces and silhouettes but takes on a totally different function
I just can't imagine wearing a top that's like "track athletic team" over my body that's clearly not run in years unless it's for a bus
if many people use them for sports itās sportwear imo
I am realising, however, that some people are thinking of sportswear as wearing a top of a team they support - which is a totally different scenario than wearing a top of doing a sport if that makes sense
I think we can all agree that when I wrote this totd I did not intend for yāall to start talking about converse all stars
And are not sportswear
I can wear air max 95s and those arenāt sports wear
I can wear a rugby shirt and that aināt sportswear
I can wear a baseball SnapBack and that aināt sportswear
What's that saying about the difference between a cult and a religion being about 2000 years? The difference between sportswear and casualwear is about 20 years.
i just donāt think these categories are mutually exclusive
Babe I donāt go to your house looking for technicalities
Answer the damn discussion topic
In good faith
I literally just wanted everyone to talk about wearing sports jerseys lmfao
This topic made me think about jerseys and basketball shoes
See the picture attached to the topic
ACTUALLY
Read the topic!
Sportswear ā jerseys
It starts off with jerseys but asks about sportswear
Heās the guy that wrote the thread
He knows what he meant
Yeah but people can interpret things in a way one didn't intend
I mean, fuck me for thinking a thread titled "sportswear in fashion" is about sportswear in fashion and not just jerseys
jerseys nuts
maybe the real sport is the friends we made along the way
I apologize for the discrepancy
Hockey jerseys with shorts is my fav
But if you read the prompt and thought the intent was to discuss polo shirts and fishing vests idk what to tell you
I will do better with tomorrowās topic
We havent discussed proper ping pong attire yet
Y'all like esports jerseys
Iām extremely disappointed that nobody brought up Nigel Cabourn at all today
you posted emilie
That should have teed someone up š
i think i figured you post nigel after ngl
mb i had to post ALD like a meme
Yes, love these
I want the black skeleton kountry jersey so bad
Not my style, but I love a styled hockey jersey. I had two high school students come in wearing hockey jerseys last year not even knowing they were hockey jerseys. They said they just saw them online and liked the color and fit.
Same š
hockey jerseys rule when styled well
Gotta support the team
there's a thin line with baseball jersey between nigel cabourn and this-
rare kendall brick even though dramaturgically it makes sense
āRare Kendall brickā idk about that
Just pair it with workwear and or milsurp
okay rare clothing brick sue me lol
that said i feel like there's a way to make that less cringe (sartorially)
Kendall Roy's Good Fits: A Thread

would make an easy totd
or else turn into old money discourse round 2 who knows
Thats not really true any more. If anything you're more likely to not be let in a pub on match day, especially wearing the opposite teams colours. I wear jerseys all the time for running and never have an issue anywhere.
I wore converse all stars while playing basketball for my university, they do the job!
I used to wear a lot of soccar t-shirts because my uncle loves soccar and occasionally give me some.
What I noticed was what would happen whenever I was at a gathering of people wearing them is all the soccar fans would gather around me to talk about soccar.
I've phased them out of my wardrobe because I don't like wearing polyester.
So it's true they're still banned from certain situations. I mostly remember them being very much banned on non uniform days in school and not allowed in college. I never see anyone wearing them casually unless it's a match day, but I also don't like football and only have a couple of friends who do so maybe I'm not seeing as many as you do, or maybe it's also a reflection of where I live.
I can't think of a single place in my city (Liverpool) that bans jerseys, it is an extremely football mad city. But I have seen it in London, around places that had more problematic fans (Chelsea, Millwall)
Chelsea :xd:
Probably is true that like, Latinos are more likely to wear jerseys anytime anywhere
I think they got a boost in the US due to Ivy + becoming Tennis sweaters here as well. RL and others usually refer to them as that, and they seem to cycle through popularity. I love a good one
Love the idea of this "Tennis cardigan" from Velasca, but wish it had pockets

I havent been wearing jerseys but i have been wearing some t shirts sold by soccer/football clubs. Some of have really dope designs. For example I got a p cool shirt from a sparta praha shop in praha this summer. I think the big red star looks cool.
