I bought a RRL button up for myself at a 2nd street and it ended up becoming too small for me. My partner wears it all the time now yea

See question from me linked below. Basic situation is this: I can get 50% off anything from ralphlauren.com from a family member (so PRL, RRL, RLPL, etc). I love the RRL look, but have avoided since items are so pricey. So what RRL items would you recommend I consider picking up? Budget is $500-1,000 for initial purchases. I buy most of my clothes off of eBay, so am used to getting really good deals, even on things that originally had a higher MSRP. Got a ~$300 Scott & Charters sweater for $30 last week. Gorgeous and looks basically never worn. Have also bought several excellent condition Brooks Brothers 1818 line suits (>$1,000 MSRP, $700-800 sale price) for ~$75 recently. It seems like many RRL items aren’t a great value even at the 50% off, at least compared to brands with equivalent quality and less price/brand premium. So am planning to be pretty discerning with what I get. Thanks for the help! https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1260400668129362010

i have some nice rrl second hand stuff... contemplating getting a particular shirt jacket but waiting til' black friday for that
warpweftwatergate
I’ll buy (and have bought) their western shirts at retail but the pricing in general is so exorbitant for what it is tbh. I’ve always felt like I can get the exact same shit elsewhere, for less, and better quality
Salty Buckets
Salty Buckets3mo ago
I think that is usually the case for most items from Ralph Lauren
warpweftwatergate
Well tbf everything within that brand umbrella other than RRL is boring prep school garbage

I think the Naomi Glasses collab stuff is really cool

I recently got a rrl satin blouson/bomber secondhand. Looking at the retail price of it made me shudder bc its definitely not that nice.

I DO still lust after one of those shawl cardigans they make though Havent found anyone else that makes ones quite as cool

I'm a big Polo guy for more of their heritage pieces, but imo the biggest issue with RL other than the prices is that a majority of what they sell give more costume energy than actual everyday garments I'm into trad US style which Polo does still provide in some regards, but it's very hard to find trad pieces from them without it being too costume-y
Legs

On the other hand, I hear that's one of the main appeals of RL: that their clothes feel like they transport you to a Hollywood set of some fantasy America
Spuck
Spuck3mo ago
As a European, I feel they probably encapsulate a sort of idea of America we have in our heads. Which is funny considering the origins.
warpweftwatergate
Look at my fits, I’m a fan of the costumey shit lmao 🤣 I get whatcha mean though

100%, and Ralph Lauren himself even admitted that an interview (not directly, of course) that he tries to encapsulate what x person would wear and try to replicate it in his clothing brand. Though if you talk to many of the era like Dick Press, Polo in the 60s through the 80s/ early 90s primarily focused on old school Americana Prep with a more modern and flamboyant take compared to what the other big names like Brooks Bros and J Press were putting out at the time. I think now with the rise of Purple Label, RRL and such, Ralph Lauren's umbrella is no longer focused on the Prep/Sloan Ranger look and now primarily targets the old money "aesthetic" with prep being reserved for a few of their heritage pieces.

I think that's probably a fair critique, although I'm far from qualified to speak on most of their catalog (especially since I'm mostly buying vintage stuff and not engaging in most recent stuff outside of lookbooks). A lot of the stuff I see that's popular on here, like vintage Andrews feel less "old money aesthetic" and more like what I'd see preppy characters wear in 80s/90s media.

I would prefer to go for vintage but I have an athletic build and a waist of 30" for andrews and anything with a 11+" rise, and most Polo clients in the 70s-2000s were not as skinny as I was, so finding good condition trousers in my size is a hunt
Legs
Legs3mo ago
I feel that, athletic with a 31" waist
Salty Buckets
Salty Buckets3mo ago
Yeah, I have a 30/32 inseam and usually when I find my waist size, the inseam is like 27-29" which is also suboptimal. I just got tired of the hassle and bought two pair new from Polo that are high waisted

Mood. 31" waist and ~23" thighs rules out most vintage flared/bootcut jeans I've tried to find.

Yeah that's another reason I like Polo trousers. True full cut. Drape is excellent as well

FYI, RRL doesn’t typically go on sale for Black Friday or holiday on the core and current season items. The “sitewide” holiday sales are pretty much only for PRL and RLX. However, you may be able to find the shirt jacket from a non-Ralph Lauren shop that carries RRL and is doing a store wide sale for Black Friday. That’s probably your best bet to find on sale before the end of the year. When switching seasons RRL will typically discount to 30% off on the prior season items. But never more than 30% off. So expect to see 30% off RRL items in January on RalphLauren.com. If you let me know which shirt jacket you’re targeting, I’m happy to speculate on whether will end up on sale in January based on whether it’s a core item or seasonal. (My sister-in-law works for RRL, thus the knowledge.) Good luck!

I’d been coveting an RRL shawl collar cardigan as well until very recently. (I can get 50% off through my sister-in-law, though even 50% off the $795 MSRP for the cashmere ones is still an investment!) Anyway, I tried a bunch on in-store to figure which one to get. And ended up not liking any of them, mostly based on the collar shape. The collar is quite high up and not as “full” as I prefer in a shawl cardigan. Great fabric and texture, but doesn’t have that classic long puffy collar/lapel. The collar is flatter and top button has a higher buttoning point. The RRL ones look similar to this Steve McQueen one, and less like the second brown one. Just wasn’t the style I was looking for basically. Alas!

I'm really going to have to do some digging around for more affordable alternatives 😅 Chamula do some lovely knits (that also aint cheap)

So I ended up buying a Todd Snyder lambswool one off eBay for $95. Was a really great pickup given that the cheapest similar alternative is the Spier & Mackay one for $198. A more expensive option than Spier for the classic look would be the lambswool or cashmere ones from The Armoury.

Ah, I'll have a look out, I'm in the UK so those brands might be less available, but cheers for the heads up!

Lots of good UK options! For ribbed shawl collar cardigans, check out the lambswool or cashmere ones from William Lockie. Looks like they are carried by a bunch of UK retailers. For RRL, I think the hand knit ones are really cool. Derek Guy loves them for example. Great textures! https://x.com/dieworkwear/status/1679634132853489666?s=46

RRL SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN They're insanely expensive, but if you can splurge on one, RRL's hand-knit shawl collar cardigans have no equal. They also do more affordable machine-knit cardigans (nice, but not as nice). Kanata & Canadian Sweater Company's Cowichans are also cool.

They look to be about $600-1,000 on eBay, so still a serious investment.

Yeah those are the ones that got me obsessed A lot of cardigans I find are too fitted/slim, which isn't what I'm after

Really wish I’d been on top of the Naiomi Glasses drops before it all sold out. So many cool pieces! Definitely. Great length and fullness on those pieces. I definitely will try to get one at some point!

I expect that piece would end up on sale in January, but no guarantees of course! A bunch of stores are stocking it though, such as Milworks, Berkeley Supply, Snake Oil Provisions, Huckberry, End, etc. so I would expect at least one of those to discount 20-30% between Black Friday and Christmas. Good luck!
