Decent dress shirts I use daily for my job, got a half dozen of them
I do not think of Spier Mackay.
don't buy anything final sale. But if you need a cheap suit they're hard to beat. I feel like I'm moving into nicer stuff now though
40 Contemporary jackets fit me perfectly
I think spier is great for your first 3 suits
After that you can start to MTM and branch out
Rise is a bit too low on the pants and it’s still a bit slim even contemporary, so I have to size up at least once and have my tailor take the waist in and let out the seat
Probably the biggest thing I’d change if I go mtm or buy from a different brand
I think the shirting is kinda meh
I got a contemporary medium casual oxford recently and I'm returning it for a contemporary large. Their contemporary fit shirts are definitely what any other store would call "slim" IMO. For me it's the armpit that's the most limiting factor.
Other than that, I love the shirt and I'm excited to get the large one.
Their standard stuff ends up being quite good for the price imo. Anything they try to do with spice just ends up being awful imo. I also second chuck’s thoughts on the general fit
I have a closet full of S&M suits I get a thousand compliments on and that look way better than every other suit at weddings I’ve been too
It kinda takes owning and wearing a few of them to understand what they’re missing
i still have the green (?) cotton s&m suit of yours saved but honestly worried spier won’t fit me the same way, especially because of the pants
Yeah that’s one, pants could definitely be slim. They have a buck of measurements but I don’t think any pants open wider than 8”
Would be an epic MTM
Spier is good for entry level and the vast majority of people don’t need/want to get past that
Design-wise they’re pretty much blatantly copying other menswear brands but it’s also not like there’s been that much innovation within the last ~60 years anyway
Their fabrics are mostly ok but are always lacking the little key details that I want (e.g. lightweight linens rather than heavier linens)
Their choices of pattern are usually pretty ugly tbh and it takes a good eye to identify what to get and what not
I love Spier, but wish they could have slightly more consistent fitment between garments in their various fabrics. Never had a major issue, but could go for more consistency.
Overall superb for basics, and imo a hard value to beat. Sure, a fair bit comes from other’s catalogues, but if you can get comparable still at like 1/4 of the price, I think that’s chill.
Def never thought I’d say this, but their pants are too slim. I busted a side seam in the top block of my chinos the other day, and don’t even have thick thighs.
Pants are def on the slim side
I love Spier. Only bought their shirts though. I might try their chinos and shorts but i'm a little concerned with the fitting since i definitely don't wear slim. I'd suggest buying different sizes of the same product, keep the best fitting one, then return the rest for free. Done it quite a few times.
Has anyone here ever tried their Paper Chinos? Curious what they mean by "feeling like paper"
Dry and a crunchy fabric I presume. The product description seems to nail it tbh
Styleforum didn’t seem to like the paper chinos
Styleforum doesn't like a lot of things. Including modernity and the invention of sneakers.
I don't like loafers
Anyone actually visited the storefront? Heading to Mississauga for work in a few weeks, wondering if it's worth stopping in to dial in my size
Absolutely disgusting. How dare you insult my footwear of choice
My tassel loafers weep
Yes, it’s a warehouse in the back and basically a Men’s Wearhouse in the front
I personally think it’s worth it but I hate doing returns
Thanks Virt! Will drop in on lunch. Appreciate the tip
Don’t expect anything in the way of service though lol
There’s a reason they’re able to offer things for so cheap
I have an appt to visit in October, when I have a trip to Toronto.
What's the verdict on their chinos and linen pants
I like them, especially on sale. I’d suggest going for the contemporary fit, because they tend to be slim.
I bought their Hollywood trouser a bit ago and love it. Should have some linen high rise chinos coming in next week too
Nice, thank you
And what about the polos
So many models so I'm a bit lost on the variety as I'm about to buy a few
I’ve only really gotten their Johnny collars.
Got one regular one last season with an old button down collar design and it’s too weird. Basically a regular button down collar but on a polo.
Also have another knit one that I like. Quality on all of them is pretty good. My oldest are ~2 years now and I haven’t had any problems
There are a few too many styles of polo rn tbh
I'm eyeing the Knit version
Might check the Johnny one and the OBDC collar one looks intriguing
Will also kop a shirt collar one unless the Johnny one turns out to be class
I dig the Johnny collars. Pretty much all I’ve worn this summer and last. Have one on rn too haha
The knit polos are dope but I had to buy Large when I'm normally a medium. Overall I'm obsessed with Spier and think their stuff is fantastic for the money. I have been wearing their linen shorts, seersucker shorts and shirts, bought a knit linen suit, I love their stuff
How’s the knit linen suit? Is it the one with the drawstring trousers?
I’ve been staring at the Sage knit linen for ages lol
Yeah that one. I'm obsessed with it
everything from spier does not fit me
why am i cursed with being somewhat overweight
i know why, don't answer that
Have any pics of the suit? My main hangup is I feel like the trousers would look weird tied.
The jacket slaps tho. Might get it if I like the madras one I just ordered
I'm gonna wear it to a wedding with a champagne knit tie and white sneakers with light gum soles. The drawstring is great. Feels like adult sweat pants
Looks great!
I think the drawstring just isn’t for me, but I might cop the blazer. Looks fantastic in the pic
Thanks! It can be tied so it's not hanging
It’s mostly just that it’s external. If it were on the inside then I’d buy it for sure - I won’t buy certain sweats for the same reason haha
The jacket is great. It's comfy. I wanted it so bad I bought a 40 when I'm normally a 40S and had my tailor shorten the length and the sleeves.
Dang that really does look like sweat pants
yeah the whole suit feels like wearing PJs. I've never had knit linen before but guessing that's how they all feel but the easy trouser really makes it chill
I'm just not a fan. My suits are quite comfortable tbh. The lack of structure in the fabric just doesn't look great imo
I own a number of knitwear items from them and it’s been hit or miss; mostly due to odd sizing and loose stitching. Figure I’d share my thoughts
-Knit polos, cotton: Fabric is good. Fit was weird. The polos are long and the sleeves are so tight on the arms they basically cut my circulation (my arms aren’t huge either). At this price point of ~50, I prefer Massimo Dutti for solid color knit polos. Spier is comparable quality to Abercrombie if you like their patterns
-Silk/cotton crewneck: Best pieces I’ve bought from Spier. Pricey, but still less than others for a similar product. Fit was perfect, material is nice and high quality, very breathable and perfect for cooler spring/summer days. Colors were nice too, I got a sage and navy one.
-100% cotton sweaters: price was so good on these on sale - like 30 usd. Colors are really good. Fit is inconsistent but better than the knit polos. Stitching isn’t great and more loose threads in a couple washes than other brands
Good brand, unless you're in Australia. Shipping cost is massive
anyone have any pics of one of their DB blazers unbuttoned? i’m looking at the linen 6x2 they have as an alternative to a j muesser waverly but all the product pics look so stiff lol
This is a summer hopsack that’s unlined
Does anyone have experience with/ advice about spier's made to order/custom suits? I'm thinking about trying it but I have some reservations. I'm a masculine-presenting afab woman and pretty close to a 34/36S, but probably not close enough that I could order a 36S and get it altered - I have narrow, square shoulders & 34s are usually too small though the chest/waist/hips. How likely is it that I'll get something decent if I tweak the measurements to account for fit issues I normally have with OTR men's sizes? I have some sewing experience so I understand my measurements & concepts like ease slightly better than a total layperson but online mto/mtm is definitely still a big leap and I don't wanna just throw away ~600usd.
I got a MTM suit from them and it was....fine. I think the measurements ended up being mostly correct. I ordered the wrong size pants entirely. But their pattern is v specific and if you're going to differ from the base pattern significantly I'd heavily consider spending some more money to get measured in person, perhaps by a maker that specializes in tailoring for non-male bodies. There's at least one in NYC but I forget the name.
What would be a significant difference? most of the changes I THINK I'd need to make are at most a couple inches but I get how that could stack up to be a lot.
Yeah there are a few in NYC. I went to one for my first and only suit several years ago -kipper clothiers in SF - it was 1800usd and the experience/result sucked. I know a fair bit more now though so I'd probably be a bit more confident this time around.
I'm no expert sadly. 2" sounds like it could be quite a bit tho tbh. You could post basically this in #questions-and-advice to get a bit more traffic and advice from people who know a lot more about suiting than I do
Another option might be to buy something on eBay and pay a local tailor to alter it.
Any experience with their peacoats?
I have an earlier generation peacoat and love it, wear it all winter long.
Word to the big boys, their stuff runs small and shrinks pretty bad, so size up and air dry. I did like the polos while they did fit
What do we think of their overshirts? I've been recommended their chore coats and with their ongoing sale, the former could be interesting as well
Are their sizes actually one size bigger than regular shirts? I'm comparing with them with the polo chart and it seems the S is matching the polo M
That would make sense for an overshirt
Double checking it since it starts at XXS rather than XS and avoiding a skintight fit although I'll only need to fit one layer underneath at most
It’s not really 1 size bigger, it’s more like “intended to fit as an over shirt”
Every time I’ve asked about their larger measurements for outerwear over the last 3 seasons, I’ve always been rather explicitly told not to size down
They actually emphasized on sticking to your regular size despite one size down's dimensions being slightly bigger than a shirt?
Yeah bc it’s an over shirt?
Any thoughts on their shorts? Thinking of picking up a few while they are on sale.
I have a few pair and like them - same sizing as trousers. A pair of linen ones I picked up this spring saw a ton of wear
Going to Toronto this weekend. Have an appt at Spier and MacKay. Does MFA have any particular tips or recs for S&M?
Particularly looking for casual jackets and overshirts right now, but open to anything
Your luck just ran out if your size is M/40 for overshirts
"Terrible" selection left with their ongoing sales
Then again, you have access to a physical location
Honestly, as long as I can get measured and try some stuff on I'll be happy.
I think I am a size 40 tho. 😀
Try everything on in person bc their measurements are spotty LOL
Also be careful with pattern selection bc a lot of theirs are ass lol
Shirts are good, jackets are good value, but I’d recommend contemporary fit vs slim
Trousers are decent value but also quite slim
Outerwear May be where they shine most tbh
Hard agree with Virt. My general advice is def contemporary fit over slim, stick to their versions of classic items rather than their awful attempts are "interesting" items like the fkin down puffy sport coats 🤢
Also p good to size up on the pants and then get the waist/seat tailored to fit
Their slim jackets don't fit me, so that's an easy choice. I'm 38R or S in their jackets. For pants, I'm on the fence between 32 slim and contemp. Slim is too small, contemp is too big for pants
Gave me this as a freebie even though I didn't buy anything.
It's not a Supreme crowbar, but you gotta start somewhere. 😀
Unfortunately no outerwear to try on
I kinda like the puffy blazers lol
Def very trendy and not meant as serious tailoring, but kinda fun to pop on every now and again.
You can tailor the contemp, you’re limited with the slim
Also you’ll learn to appreciate drape
Already used the mug for it's true purpose: taking a fit pic. 😀
Might get chore coats, field jackets, overshirts and harringtons explicitly from their store because of how reliable their options are
I agree on the outwear shout
Been disappointed with the fit on their trousers
And I missed the return window like an idiot so I have a bunch of stuff to get rid of
Ulster cost was a great pickup though
Fit check on this Ivy Oxford? I'd like the sleeves to be longer and the top button is uncomfortable to button.
Sleeves seem short. You probably want to post in #styling-suggestions or #questions-and-advice but if the top button is tough and the sleeves I’d pass
How is the knitwear?
Ok for the (cheap) price.
What about the higher end pricing
From what brand?
Spier & Mackay
I'm talking about their knitwear items around 150-200$
Those are also less expensive versions that are okay for the price. The type of knit/garment is just more expensive in general
Decent value for wool knitwear at retail prices. But I always felt like I wanted a denser knit
Seems good for stuff like turtlenecks that you wear under a jacket
So it's mostly for layering huh
The taupe turtleneck looks class
They also got that cricket vest that's intriguing me
I like my shawl collar cardigan from them
I find their jackets to have too narrow and restrictive of an arm, which is too bad because I really like them otherwise, especially their double breasted jackets
anyone have experience with their knit hoodie? https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/charcoal-hooded-long-sleeve-sweater-fw23

Anyone tried their denim? How straight is the contemporary fit?
I’ve got the high waisted denim jeans. Contemporary is pretty slim/straight imo
Here’s a pic from a hike where I’ve got em on
Thanks for the picture!
Does anyone have experience with their overcoats? I'm debating between the navy wool/cashmere blend and some of the Zanieri 100% wool options.
I'm interested in the cable-knit that is on sale, but can't decided if the "wider and thicker" refers to the sweater or the cable-knit features. I am a bit worried it will be too thin
https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/heather-cream---cable-knit-crewneck-7787-ccb-cnk
Heather Cream Cable Knit Crewneck
Spier & Mackay
It’s the features — it won’t be a very thick cable knit. Their knitwear is more “I’m wearing this for style” than “It’s fucking cold in the Scottish isles”
for $100 just search for sweaters on ebay
I have the navy and like the coat very much. It's suitable for my mid-Atlantic US winter however real winter like in the plains of the US, Sweden, Russia, etc, it's not sufficient. The coat isn't made with a heavy enough fabric for those conditions. O'Connell's in Buffalo will have better coats for serious winter weather.
what are some do and dont buys of Spier & Mackay?
Do’s: Outerwear, shirts
Don’ts: Slim cuts of pants
My pants in waywt are a contemporary 34 Hollywood trouser. I’d go up to 35 just for more room in the top block - but altogether they’re still a super slim trouser.
their work shirts look nice, so im glad you said that they are on the Do list
Best budget shirts imo. Hard to beat for $25-35 on sale haha
right, and everywhere i read people rave about the quality so thats good, def gonna have to pick up some dress shirts from them
I've been considering getting a MTM chambray shirt from them
MTM?
I ordered a Chambray shirt with a rinse wash on final sale and I have to say that the fit is quite impressive for the price
Wish I could say the same about the denim shirt which is a bit too soft for my liking to the point where the folded sleeves come off far too easily
Made to measure. They call them "custom shirts" on the website
Does anyone know when Spier and Mackay is restocking their website? They had a sale and now most of their suit supply is gone in most sizes
They don’t really “restock”, they just post new stuff
And they also just put up like 15 or so suits
legit almost 30 new ones in the last 2 weeks
Would love their basic trousers to get restocked though...
I have bought their linen chore coat but this coat is designed for giant. I bought this in size xxs and the sleeves length is 88cm! I don't remember how long the sleeves length is listed on the website but the sizing is way off.
How are you measuring the sleeve? Cuz 88cm is longer than the garment by typical measuring points
It's the center back sleeve length, the sleeve length is about 66cm, it is about 5cm longer than the measurement of their size chart.
I agree. I had to cuff the sleeve
Huh, that’s super long then. I’m sure they’d let you return it, or maybe you could ask they comp you to have them shortened.
is Spier Mackay kind of like a suitsupply or mens wearhouse type of store? never heard of them but it seems to be recommended a lot in the discord
Well for one spier is online except for their warehouse you can visit in the Toronto area while the other two have a ton of physical stores
Spier's price point and level of make is on the level of suitsupply while men's warehouse is generally much below both
I see. Thanks!
Spier covers a much wider range of products than Suitsupply, but for suiting the two are fairly comparable. You probably pay a slight premium for Suitsupply but it comes with the benefit of actually getting to try on products w/ a tailor vs having to figure out your own measurements.
Would you guys suggest the core line over the red for a bigger guy? Reading the pants might be an issue
For bigger guys, I think S&M may not be the best choice in general. That's what I seem to recall from last time this came up, but I may be mistaken.
46l 38/32 if that helps any.
Thinking I might call them and order one depending on what they say. I can return it if it doesn't work
Check the measurements
The jackets are cut pretty slim, even their non-slim ones, especially in the arms
I would definitely recommend the "Contemporary" cut over "Slim", unless you are really, really skinny.
yeah i've owned a few different things from spier and at a size 46 i'd have to recommend other brands tbh
i like their classic fit shirts but like everything else feels way too slim
i also like only wear higher rise pants now and spier caps out at like a 12" rise for their "high rise" trousers
Spier's trousers just kinda suck in general unless you're still into the v slim look
agreed
got some cords from them that were very disappointing. not into how they fit really
that said, i am currently considering ordering a couple linen shirts because i bought one for like $30 on sale recently and it's really nice for that price
I haven't really messed with their shirts tbh other than I think they wanted me to try one out in their new fabric so I was able to get a MTM for free or something. Not sure I even still have the shirt
Their jackets fit me OTR so well though. I'm so sad the trouser fit is so wonky I'd prolly wear nothing but their suits
Does anyone rate their chore coat and harrington jacket?
I think they got a new batch of chore coats with actual models wearing them which is pretty cool
I'm pitting it against Everlane's chore coat
Looks p good but there are a lot of cooler vintage options out there for not more money
Not doubting it, but the market I'm seeing from Canada is either expensive, hard to "reach" or not 100% trustworthy like nameless coats on eBay
Which one(s) would you have in mind
I know they don't restock a lot of items, but do they ever restock their basic high rise chinos?
They don't restock anything pretty much. Sometimes they get returns, but most of the time they just make new things that may or may not be similar to old stock
I mean even similar stuff is fine. Or if anyone has suggestions for high rise chinos 😅
They tend to get a shipment of high rise, flat-front chinos in every season
Thank you! Hopefully there's one coming soon. New office job and all that
Hello everyone! New to the server and I'm looking for some info about spier mackay. Specifically, I'd like to find out what's the service like for ordering outside North America, how long you have to wait, how returns were handled if there were any. I can't seem to find any such info.
Some of this will depend on your home country import restrictions. Here in the UK the instant VAT+duty+fees hit at the border undermines the value proposition significantly by themselves, and you won't get these back if you need to return anything.
Thanks for the info
I've become Spierpilled over the past couple of years and am pretty much getting all my button-down shirts from them. I love the long collars.
Are there any brands at a similar price point doing similar things? Not a fan of present-day Brooks Brothers. Thrifted Gitman is pretty good. Is there anything else doing what Spier does with shirting at its prices?
Basically no, especially for RTW
How's the fit on the contemporary high rise pants?
Depends a lot on the season, but generally Spier’s “contemporary” is more like a slim-straight. This season’s is probably more like a straight cut - I just got some of their Hollywood trousers and they’re not as wide as PRL Andrew chinos
Ah damn, was hoping for a less slim than that, should have known better concerning spier and mackay. Thanks!
Anyone know when the items in their “fall preview” section are likely to be released?
It's kind of random. Some stuff ends up moving to "new arrivals" after a week. Some stay on the "preview" page for months. And sometimes things land on "new arrivals" without having ever been on the preview page.
That’s frustrating. I’m trying to decide if I should keep the heathered grey polo coat I ordered or wait for the camel one to release
On the other hand I guess it’s nice that they do show previews at all in the first place
Usually it depends on when their shipments come in - sometimes certain items get delayed forever, while others pop up and are stocked in 2 days.
They’re usually fairly responsive on instagram, though they might not know exactly when an item will land. Their email usually goes to an outsourced CS department.
But I’m pretty sure they DHL the one sample for pics, and then freight the rest of em
Makes sense. I tried their support, they were predictably unhelpful
Fwiw — I feel like camel is the way to go with a polo coat. And IMO it's the kind of piece where waiting a few weeks is worth it, since it's presumably a piece you'd use for weeks.
Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m just worried that if I wait and wait it won’t exist.
I’m also slightly kinda suspicious about a camel coat less than 1K CAD given there isn’t really anything else on the market at that price that I’m aware of
I think it's probably camel-colored wool and not actual camelhair? Could be wrong though.
Nope it says 100% camel hair from a mill called Leonard based in China
Update, I got the grey/taupe in the mail and it’s actually pretty dope
Camel is the more classic colour with a polo coat but grey works with more things imo, and you gotta nail the exact shade of camel for it to work well with everything
I personally don’t trust Spier’s eye for colour quite as much, and certainly don’t trust their eye for pattern — always way too gaudy
Yeah that’s fair! I’m also a bit skeptical of the unknown quality of the camel hair and I have no basis on which to judge it. Whereas I trust what seems like a strong consensus that their wool is woven by reputable mills that produce high quality cloth
I’m just attracted to the romance of it hehe. I’m not American tho so I don’t feel any kind of heritage vis a vis the Polo Coat as a Thing. I’m telling myself it’s an Ulster instead.
I will avoid wearing it and then probably get the camel one to compare if it comes out during my return window tho.
How do you like their sweaters? I am looking for some 100% wool navy to wear on top of shirts.
I'll ask a similar question regarding their peacoat and how it fares against Schott NYC's
I like them - they’re decently hefty and fairly well made. They’re not going to blow your mind, but I’ve yet to buy one and feel like it wasn’t worth the price. Solidly affordable and well-done knitwear imo
Thanks, nice description
Is the difference between this suit: https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/navy-neo-cut-suit-8879-nes1-hr01-fc
And this suit: https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/navy-150s-neo-cut-suit-9909-neo2-hr01
Mainly that one uses 270g/meter fabric and the other 280g/meter?
If so, which is better? I assume the difference is marginal. Does one wrinkle less than the other?
