I personally use Velocity, but even tho my server only has 15-20 players at a time. I couldnt go without it.

Selfhosting at home isnt really a good idea, but if u really want to do it I do have some tips:
- Run debian or ubuntu on the server
- Install pterodactyl panel to manage your game servers
The rest I dont know, but for ddos you could go with something like TCPShield
