I use Cloudflare's proxy for my authentication domain address (for DDoS blocking and a bunch of other things they offer)

Additionally, I would recommend you check if this happens in incognito mode.
If you have a lot of extensions in your browser, this can cause this to happen.

When I experienced the problem here, I noticed that all the Peoples that have associated faces have their images on disk, but there is something strange about the faces with the error:
The images do appear when you go to the images of the People with the error
But when you zoom in, the image displays an error (even when you try to download the image)
Therefore, you should also check that the image does exist on your disk and that you are able to view it properly through your system's image viewer

When you claim that uploading via browser is done without problems, are you using a reverse proxy?

Try checking out Immich CLI for bulk image uploads
You can also check out immich go (I recommend it)

Immich is storing my files in a weird way.
This shouldn't cause any problems assuming all folders are indeed empty, but I can't tell you for sure, maybe it's worth waiting for Alex's answer.
