Planning for a modded Minecraft server for school
I have gathered with the students department to make a Minecraft server, it is planned to be a modded server. I must make a plan of what I need.. I have the hosting ensured, rough estimations might be around 15-20 players max on specific times.
I must take into consideration:
- desired platform (forge OR fabric) (will be chosen by students tbh)
- desired modpacks (self made modpacks are unstable. Would be pretty to find an adventure+tech styled modpack in a recent mc version)
- JVM flags setup. I need help with this. I do not know how to tune JVM flags

Do you guys believe that 6 gb of memory is enough? I'm definitely going to pregen terrain
Id suggest Fabric as its newer, I personally really love BigChadGuys+ (With or Without Cobblemeon, 1.20) and 6gb probably wont be enough, id go for something around 10+
https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/modpacks/bcg
Depending on number of mods, anywhere from 12-16 gigs would do fine
My instance atm has 8 gb of ram but I'd rather tweak good jvm flags than bump memory
8gb should do well enough tbh
Unless you are running things like create
obviously you should do gravitas 2
CurseForge
All The Mods - Gravitas²
Gravitas is back, and GregTech came too
91.5K Downloads | Modpacks
smh gtnh only here
shit im gonna play rn. thanks
Oh yeah how heavy it is?
light
And fun?
it was a joke, it's terrafirmacraft and gregtech
aka the two biggest overhaul/technical difficulty mods
took my friend 15 hours of playtime to just get steel
I mean why not?
I'm looking for long term gameplay
for example, this is part of how you make iron in the game
that's after ~12 hours of gameplay, maybe more
dont do it
ive been playing modded mc for 8 years and i wouldnt touch anything greg related with a 20 feet pole
Vault Hunters
Good modpack for long term collaborative gameplay
Lots of fun RNG elements, has something for all playstyles
as long as you have a decent amount of ram
Holy shit iron forging irl
Even with the coal percentages
cough cough
:stare:
I only play gregtech related modpacks :)
sadly fun is one of my requirements for modpacks :3c
Gregtech is fun if you like very techy stuff
gtnh is too much for me tho never got any higher than hv
8 gb is decent 🥺🥺🥺
I can ask for more anyways
absolutely not for vaulthunters
@Deathpacito knows
i've seen 24gb heapdumps where it's virtually all VH
50% vaulthunters itself, then ~30% is dimensions... from vh
LMFAO
Nty
24gb?
i thought at 16 gb you basically bottleneck for a single core
not really, it’s just that Java’s GC tends to struggle at 12gb which harms performance.
You have to do a bunch of flag tuning to make the GC run decently well
our gravitas 2 server is using a surprisingly little amount of memory, although only one person is on right now and it's very early game
What data would you gather from players who are interested t play modded minecraft together? I've gathered preferred version, preferred modloader, if they want to make another paper SMP if there's too many people, and if they prefer docs install or video tutorials
if they love/hate certain mods
Oh yeah
Good one
mods like crate and cobblemon are some that are REALLY devided from what I have seen, so yea its the first thing I would ask
just make a google form (even works for small groups) so its anonymus and no one gets forced into anything and give them some options
I have a Google form kekw
Yeah I'm giving them all options. Most of them are optional for the people who don't care at all
E.g. preferred plataform, forge or fabric
I currently have my eyes on a tech modpack called monifactory because it's a tech modpack that should be quite easy and fun even for new players but idk how bug free it is
I'm also asking my players if they want a normal paper-based SMP with a few qol plugins
Cuz probably the modpack server will be quite limited on player numbers due to resources but I don't expect the server to have a constant 15 players all time
Likes/dislikes
people they interact with
people they hate
imo, make your own pack
my pack was (imo) pretty good because it was multi genre
tech, exploration, general survival, magic
the problem with just tech modpacks, or adventure modpacks etc for public servers is that it narrows the playerbase substantially
making multi genre packs make it so much nicer for people who only want to get involved with one aspect of the pack
rather than requiring you to do something you don’t enjoy to progress
Also a nice option
A simple modpack to avoid mod conflict
Will note this
I will also say, a lot of people like modpacks that have quest books, some people don't
really it's personal preference
I prefer having a quest book that way I always have a goal to go forwards to
Anyone have more ideas or I conclude to start my preparations?
Formulary contents to gather data:
-> custom modpack or premade (both light)
-> preferred versions
-> server style (if only a modded server, two modded server, or additional paper server, or suggestion)
-> forge or fabric
-> hated or desired mods and justification
if you have bad hardware/high player counts or you prioritize plugins:
paper/purpur/puffer
if you prefer mods:
fabric
if you prefer mods and fabric doesn't support the mod that you want to play
forge
would always suggest fabric over forge if you dont have a reason to use forge
versions, 1.16.5, 1.17, 1.21 or newest is what I can recommend
and if you have a server network (or plan to have one), use a proxy like velocity, both fabric and forge supports velocity with a 3rd party mod
Thanks
