The Unicorn - Topic of the day 10/6/24
Despite the leaps and bounds we've made as humans there are still some articles of clothing/accessories that do not exist. What is your "unicorn" - a particular item that does not exist? An item made of a certain material or color? An item with unique or different functionality? (note MFAD is not responsible if your good idea is stolen)

I NEED a THNEED
Good pants
I want a heavy brown wool twill tweed suit. In a turn of the 20th century retro-futuristic but still somehow contemporary workwear / tailoring fusion style. I also want a fedora style hat that doesn't make me look like a dickhead.
I’ve been pondering recently- what new garment could be made which seems totally novel? In a sense everything is iterative/evolutionary… like you could say that the hoodie is a modern equivalent of a cloak, etc. but the recent past of fashion has struck me more as regurgitating the past from new angles rather than making anything totally new. Maybe my perspective is just limited?
Just to clarify- obviously in the avant-garde space lots of novel things occur (as well as lots of iterations of old things) , I’m thinking specifically items which reach the wider public attention
I think temperature moderation is always a challenge, it’d be great if textile innovation could catch up to allow me to dress however i want and not suffer when i’m stuck waiting on a hot subway platform
smh the Snuggie was ahead of its time
ive been thinking abiut how with climate change we're going to get more and more of these wide temperature swings from day to night and what you're saying is a trend i hope i'll see
more layering, more multi-environment outfits
i wonder if the solution is backpack straps on coats, or warm garments that can fit in a purse
thats only ajacent to what youre saying tho
Totally a cool area for new ideas and technology as well, and an Important context you’re identifying.
I struggled with sun protection this summer. concluded that having a big ass hat is important, but it's hard to find one that offers good protection and doesn't look dorky as hell
yes yes yes we need these
I think with the impending end of privacy, constant facial recognition we could see a whole lot more face covering pieces. Im thinking stiff, high rising scarves/neck sleeves to past mid face, incorporated into hoods. Balaclavas and the likes. Obviously we would have to steer into a more dystopian world first. And besides all the social reasons behind it, theres something cool about a hidden identity. It would have to lose its connotation for being used in criminal context only
magic cotton that can go through the wash and dryer after gross 2nd graders grab my sleeve after eating takis
I need a second wardrobe of things for teaching that I don't care if I have to toss into a burn barrel
Gambler?
(Hat)
do you watch any of the techwear brand shows
like boris bidjan saberi/11
I want like kapital double knee pants where the double knee panel is boro
Ive dreamt about something like that for awhile
hate to put it like this, but that sounds incredibly easy to diy
YEAH PROBABLY
I can barely sew on a button
Everyone wants to wear Carhartt till it’s time to do Carhartt things
Easy, simply
1- buy a boro jacket
2- Cut it up
3- pay someone to sew on the panels.
U can get nice boro fabric on yjp for pretty cheap.
Like 50ish bucks for a decently cool looking patches and like 5x5 ft
Good pants
I want one of the pretty patagonia fleeces with the spiber brewed protein fleece material that they used for the north face Junya collab
N more generally I want that tech to be affordable (which is probably the real unicorn) because right now plastics are the best fleece materials
These do exist already, snoods and other partial facial coverings that beat facial recognition software
Speaking of plastics for textiles, how are they doing with solving the extensive microplastic pollution that results from laundering? That part sucks.
True, I’m sure they are working really hard on that
that’s why I’m using my wish on them using the cool biomaterial fleece to make anything other than the world’s ugliest hoodie
Because the current fleece material in particular sheds microplastics like crazy
I’m always an advocate for better environmental practices but I thought I recall seeing a study showing a majority of microplastics is really just coming from car tires degrading slowly over time as they’re used
I still try to go for natural fibers for this reason but also worth considering
Your car has wool tires? Hell yeah
