When Rule-Breaking Becomes the Norm - Topic of the day 8/31/24
Once upon a time I'm guessing you heard a bunch of rules about how to dress - from your parents or friends or the internet. What previous "rules" have you broken and adopted into your regular dressing and what was the context (function, personal style, coincidence)? Do you see a reason to ever go back to the old way?

I think you have to know the rules before you start breaking them. It’s not breaking the rules if you don’t know what rules you’re breaking. And it has to look intentional too
Just like how abstract artists know the rules of traditional art and can draw, it’s important to be able to know traditional rules before you start deviating from the norm
Mixing metals in jewelry bc they only had the gold colored nose pads for my frames 😎
The only rule is you have to look cool therefore I never break the rules

Different kinds of denim at the same time, sleeves rolled loosely, dress watch with tee shirts, bandana on always
I don't know the rules bc I can't read
Frankly, most rules are silly
I like that my watch straps are no longer decided by my belt color
There are things you should watch out for while dressing. But none of these really fit into neat lil rules
Agreed
I feel like in a business setting this still applies no ?
Weren’t white socks illegal before or something
That’s all I wear now
The only rule is you have to look cool therefore I am always breaking the rules
:cryingderek:
formality in general was the biggest one for me; wearing things like suits or blazers or ties in casual settings and with different things feels more authentic to how i dress and what inspires me
i still respect "traditional" dressing when i think the situation calls for it but for the most part i wear what i think is cool that day
Rules are great if you're starting out, but you can't have a cool unique style without breaking some rules
I think what makes “rules” in fashion more difficult is that it’s all contextual. “Don’t wear white socks” isn’t a fashion rule, that was specific advice that was reacting to dudes wearing the same white ankle and crew socks either everything including a formal suit and tie to the office.
I’ve not really knowingly broken a style “rule” bc stuff like that and “match leathers” only apply in specific circumstances. You’re not breaking a formal rule if you’re not in that context or actively subverting it somehow
