obligatory post of saying that home hosting is not as nice as u think, and can easily cost more per month than if you would've just gotten a shared plan on a host dedicated to minecraft
honestly i think your best course of action would be to look at your local area's second hand market
and desktop computers can be repurposed as servers if you're not looking for things such as ipmi
this too
but homelabbing can be a good experience if that is the goal
if you're goal is to have fun playing around with a computer and learning the ins/out of server management. its a great investment. if your goal is get a nice minecraft server up and running for an afforable price. then home hosting is not it unless ur willing to sacrifice performance and the time
if you need ipmi, just search for retired servers
those older xeon x or e series ones
supermicro/dell
do not the HP
hp servers have a nice management platform, but fans are real loud
speaking from experience
the HP server idling beats all my 5 R430s, switches, a R520 idling at the same time
This can be your homelab π
For real though, ebay will be your best friend.

Dell PowerEdge R430 Server Dual x E5-2690 v4 2 x 120GB SATA SSD
This would honestly be a great starter for you, the E5-2690v4 is relatively modern still
nononono
avoid 1Us for homelabbing
I love my R430s, but 1Us can be loud
consider options like the R520
something 2U, or even 4
way quieter fans
I'm just speaking experience, the 520 only supports the 2400 v1-v2 series, not fast enough for a decent mc server
Theyβre fine for me tbh, I have these 1Us and 5 R430s with x2 Xeon 2697v4s in them, theyβre all fine
still louder, so depends on where op wants them
dell's
Third-party PCIe card default cooling response
gets me every timeServer racks are just storage systems with cooling I can use consumer grade hardware on right?
I want a rack and the thought of compacting an entire ATX setup interests me
Yeah, you can build using a server chassis
Racks don't always come with cooling fyi
mm I dont even have a rack
my things are just stacked on top of another
maintenance is a true pain in the back
pull all the things onto the ground, and then work on the one as needed, then put everything back on top
Carpet?
even wood
Carpet can be a source of static electricity and fry things, and wood is not good for cooling
They are lifted off the ground normally
