Maybe you could get away with a PLA plate but I suspect it'd wear out after a few swaps. I don't really trust plastic friction fits.

I wouldn't try to do hotswap without a plate, it'd be super unstable and unpleasant to type on

My build is with a plate. All the keys are mostly stable, the 2u ones just tilt vertically cuz there's no horizontal bars to keep them steady
