Basic Outfit in 2025 - Topic of the day 3/22/25
The basic wardrobe changes every year. The basic wardrobe in 2022 may not be the same as the basic wardrobe now. What changes do you think are now part of the basic wardrobe?

It’s crazy how sort of splintered out fashion is now there’s like 5 or 6 different “basic bastard” packs u could give out now
HORSE POWER, HORSE POWER
ALL THIS POLO ON I GOT HORSE POWER
Following. Basic bastard uniform reminds me of simpler times.
It's like basic stuff is being made overcomplicated now for the sake of content creation (specially in fitness and fashion)
You can still wear whatever uniform basic bastard if you want to just not be naked.
Yes, that's the approach now.
theres only so many times someone can publish "ocdb, chino, shoe" and have dudes pay attention.
Yupp
i think there's also been a shift from teaching men what clothes are towards encouraging the development of personal style
But then while taking a walk - I see 5 different folks dressed exactly the same way (aka uniform) - and realize that this must be the new tiktok trend. (not on tiktok myself).
Which is a highly positive development.
honestly a simple guide would help me
by simple i mean a few choices per... part? top layer, bottom layer

And similarly, everyone used to wear a slim button up with slim jeans and white sneakers
I used to equate it to wearing a suit - all look the same - and that's the way it should be.
However
This
And this
are both positive developments
I would be interested to hear which outfit combinations y'all would consider the basic bastards of 2025 (or late 2024 for that matter)
I think online mens fashion culture used to see clothing more objectively "this is how X should fit", "these are the colors of pants you need to have", whereas now the culture is way more open ended. It's a good sign of humility imo, although it probably makes things more frustrating for newcomers.
It reminds me of Ametora where early on Ivy-loving Japanese men felt like they needed a rulebook on how to follow Ivy Style. But over the decades, those hard rules fell by the wayside as people felt comfortable finding an aesthetic and dressing to it.
This feels modern BB to me:
Shoes: white sneakers, chunky sneakers, loafers, chunky derbie's
Pants: PRL Andrews, straight fit denim, or fatigues
Shirt: OCBD or Chambray
Jacket: blazer, chore coat, denim
I live next to a school. The uniform is oversized hoodie or crewneck and big jeans with stacking. White sneakers are still in, but not the 2010s minimalist style
Yeah, that is roughly in line with my observations as well
I still see plenty of people wear slim jeans, even in places like NYC.
well yeah there will always be people wearing all kinds of things
for femme presenting people my age the wardrobe seems to be leggings and hoodies or sweatpants and hoodies, or black/ light wash straight/baggy low rise jeans, plus some sort of small top
masc ppl my age who i interact with don’t really tend to dress basic so idk what they do
1. Wfh tech employee
2. Guy who loves Throwing Fits
3. dieworkwear adherent
4. raw denim guy
5. prl guy
I fear u went 0 for 5
What I see (for folks not wearing Parka or Puffer in winter):
Footwear - New Balances of various kinds/ Salomons/ Club Cs/ Blundstones
Outerwear - Overcoats, Macs and Barbours now that it's warming up a bit
Bottoms - Fits are all over the place to be honest - but straight/ wider fits for those who seem like they put some effort. See Medium/ Light wash denim much more than good old Indigo.
Tops - forgot what summer looks like by now
1, 2 - don't know
3 - There is a blog which publishes Spring/ Fall inspo
5 - Polo Ralph Lauren
i just opened this thread up and im glad we've kept up the reddit tradition of the blind leading the blind
Let the one eyed man show us the way
Speaking strictly about MFAD, which is where my experience with internet fashion starts and ends:
If we’re defining “basic” as an easy recommendation, what people recommend in QnA might be a more accurate measure than in waywt, which seems to me to have a huge diversity of styles, particularly recently. In this case, echoing some above, some individual items I would say are PRL Andrew’s, duck boots, blundstones, straight cut wranglers, and wool coats that go past the knees. (there are many more, for sure.)

Started on MFA because I was trying to stop wearing jeans and t-shirts every day. 9 years later I wear jeans and t shirts most days but they are more expensive
there's still plenty of people near me who dress like it's 2010 and will perish if they can't get a j.crew gingham shirt and navy fleece vest, only now they wear hokas
people who actually wear these styles fully and earnest can jump in if i'm wrong but to sort of build off of carrion's assessment in reverse order
5. some mix of ivy and preppy, and inspired by take ivy - chinos, polo shirts, ocbds, shetland sweaters, jeans, loafers, blazers/sport coats older than they are, and in the summer stuff like madras, Baggies and boat shoes; probably wears sneakers or logo caps to show they're With It but not in a Streetwear kinda way
4. wears raw denim and things that go with raw denim, but usually a fan of leather as well. maybe they wear bandanas, maybe they wear old jewelry, maybe they wear vintage tees.
3. either it's someone who has a bent towards tailoring or it's someone who read die workwear's advice and looks for the most versatile wardrobe, heavily concerned with fit and color coordination (the Basic Bastard essentially)
2. either they dress like your average tiktok content creator or your average instagram content creator; in either case it's a mix of the first three except with more sneakers, wider fit clothes, and probably designer stuff for no real reason
1. has two answers
1a) hoodie, t-shirt, maybe a button down, jeans or chinos and sneakers or chukkas.
1b) person who wears The Socks and things that go with them
also i wish digs were the standard of how to dress for people, things would be a lot easier lol
If a person came up to beside themselves, driving around town begging (thru text) that they need to dress better…
Ill tell them to go to buck mason
Basic in NW NJ would be a hoodie with a random landscaping company on it, joggers, and boots. My idea of basic is Namu shop. I’m not sure what’s happening out there anymore.
also basic is a relative term as people have expressed
zeo it's simple
plain color t-shirt blue jeans and sneakers :linkDab:
