Is my style drifting towards conservative without me noticing?

So I watched this video (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHOhHPugkDY/) and now I'm worried that the smarter and beige clothing I've adopted recently fits a conservative/old money style of clothing with awful connotations.

When will this trend end 😭 I’m tired of seeing conservative fashion and those idealogies leaking into these niches. Leave us alone 😭 #fashion

Sam you're just dressing like a normal guy. Conservatism in fashion is so far from what you're doing I don't even know how you got that idea. - There are no hard rules to what makes something politically conservative short of clothes with literal political slogans (see MAGA hats). - This content creator is conflating wealth with conservatism - Old money is not a real aesthetic

I think I just watched the video and thought that, by dressing somewhat less casually and more formally that I was unintentionally adopting conservative outfits :linkSweat: Sorry, anxiety sucks

As somebody from the uk, nothing in your oufits suggests anything like what is talked about in the video

It's not just this guy, I've seen a bunch of articles in the last year about the "old money" "conservative" trend. It's the new "dark academia" and I'm pretty sure it has not very much to do with political conservatism. It's more like the weird trad wife culture on social media. But I'm a mid 30s boomer and don't understand any of this, you kids go off I guess

generally, there is a very very loose assocation between say Tories, and dressing in a more traditional/formal way, but none of your outfits are giving off that connotation

I am a regular attendee at actual political events in the UK @Sam , you don't need to worry about this based on your current outfits/inspo.

This reel is so dumb It's a stretch to jump from brands producing boring dark sweaters to political conservatism. There possibly is an insinuation that not showing skin is tied to conservatism which is insulting and false. There's the whole history of elements of Ivy etc being worn by academics and radicals You're really casual. Might well consider trying out being more conservative fashion-wise, if you're interested. Get good at dressing in menswear, and then play around with it. That's what I'm trying to, would like to be doing

he's not fully wrong but he's distilling a far more nuanced take into a 30 second reel

sol of pairofkings wrote about ivy style and towards the end notes how it's been used by conservatives in recent years (and a helpful comment cough notes this has recurred in history). yhe key is in the context of who/how these are being worn and from what i know of you Sam you are not engaging with clothes like this https://onesizefitsall.substack.com/p/systematic-racism-birthed-ivy-style?utm_source=post-banner&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=posts-open-in-app&triedRedirect=true
Systematic Racism Birthed Ivy Style. 60 Years Later, There's a Cust...
This week on One Size Fits All, I explore the conditions under which Ivy Prep developed, why it matters, and who — in modern fashion — owns the look.

He's moreso calling out the brands, figures in the space, etc. and not really anyone's personal style imo. As zeo mentioned there's a decent amount of truth in there, but I don't think it's aimed at someone who wants to wear PRL and neo-ivy stuff.

It's ironic that the current conservative regime and ivy league student body is at opposite ends of the political spectrum and are so against each other, especially with administration's response to Columbia University student protests.

i think there’s a difference between prep and conservative. the two don’t have to be inherently intertwined - shrimp makes a really good point about wealth being conflated with conservatism too. ‘posh’ clothes =/= conservative even if it gets you called a tory… speaking from experience haha

Ivy and Prep and similar have tons of history of subversion as well so it's not at all a 1:1 ivy/prep/trad == conservative values

I don’t see conservative in those examples he used.

yeah, all of the actual politics aside i don't quite get his examples. especially the prettylittlething rebrand. i get that fast fashion is gonna reflect trends but its not like fake quiet luxury gives off any sense of wealth, its just minimal. in my opinion at least nothing about it looks like ivy or prep, just more modest
kewlpinguino

and fr i would not call these conservative

(to be 100% fair the PLT rebrand is a little irritating but for different reasons abt what quiet luxury even is, articulated here https://www.the-independent.com/life-style/pretty-little-thing-rebrand-b2710164.html anyway im probably gonna stop bc i think im getting off topic)
The Independent
The glaring problem with PrettyLittleThing’s rebrand
PrettyLittleThing has got a new look, chasing after the demand for so-called ‘quiet luxury’. But for Katie Rosseinsky, it’s just more evidence of the void at the heart of fast fashion

i would argue fake quiet luxury is to convey some sense of wealth, or at least something beyond just minimal, otherwise people would just dress like uniqlo mannequins and call it a day i agree there's not great examples (the first in particular; a lengthy discussion can and probably has been had on Black people's adopting of traditionally ivy or preppy styles especially as trend cycles continue)

Where is the line between quality basics and fake quiet luxury?
zeometer
zeometer2w ago
"quality basic" doesn't have to mean "minimal clothes in neutral colors and silhouettes"; if your personal style lends itself to wearing yohji or vivenne westwood (as examples) then your "basic" may not be a white uniqlo supima tee same as if you gravitate towards tailoring from day-to-day; your basic might be a suit

I wear mostly Kaptain sunshine and Sage de cret. That probably leans a little too workwear to be labeled as fake quiet luxury, but who knows with these gen Z kids and their names for everything. Lol
