Music and Fashion - Topic of the day 1/3/25
Now that everyone's finalized their Spotify Wrapped, let's talk tunes 🎶 How does music impact how we dress? (And how much of this impact is from musicians themselves?) What genres or musicians have been most influential, either to your personal style or fashion in general?

While currently I don’t think music or musical artists influence much of how I dress (maybe there’s some second hand influence going on through people directly inspired by artists), there was a phase where I thought Alex Turner was the shit and that I needed to dress like him. Needless to say this remained a phase.
Maybe I oughta look towards musical artists more for fit inspo?
my ex shopped exclusively at rag & bone bc he was a fan of the national
Actually, while I’ll never pull it off this lives in my head rent free
Actually this got me thinking. For a big part of my life I’ve been on the “sad dudes with guitars” train musically and I’m pretty sure this pipelined me right into ivy/milsurp/workwear. So I stand corrected?
The David Byrne big suit is iconic
well, personally I'm a musician and I listen to a really wide range of music and I would say there is impact with what I like w/ clothes. However, one could probably find some broad correlations because my tastes are all coming from the same general place
there are some musicians I would like to dress more like, but I don't think thats to do with their actual music
think there's something to be said about what you wear to diff concerts though
Wish I had more good band merch
Most of my tees are metal band tees, so yeah
idk about how the art of music interacts with fashion but the punk movement musicians and crowds have certainly, and still constantly, influence my view of clothes. I like watching people wear whatever they want, with a hint of rebellion/otherness. For me this occurs most often at concerts, which are movement heavy places full of diy, influencing and restricting what is worn.
i think everyone is influenced by music in fashion whether directly or through diffusion
like i don't rly look at musicians as inspo or anything but maybe the people that inspire me do
i don't always enjoy it but i admire the music videos/concept photo portion of k-pop and the storytelling involved
I don't really dress like it, but early 80s British post punk and late 80s/early 90s DC hardcore have a slot in my head for all time.
I hate to say it but i think flares are out for a while
Ysl is doing 80s, gucci is doing doo doo crap. There arent any big fashion forces drawing from the 60s and 70s rn
Not that I would usually wear one, but The Clancy Brothers notorious Aran jumpers do look comfy, especially in the current weather.
99% of it is from the musicians themselves, but the musicians themselves have a huge impact. Hip-hop, Pop, Rock, and Punk have absolutely influenced fashion the most imo.
Vivienne Westwood and 70s British punk, Run DMC and Adidas in the 80s, Like all of hip-hop post kanye tbh as much as he sucks
Redman
ive been on the hunt for some Serge Gainsbourg inspired shades. Theyre a model called Marly Sport, but i wanna try em first cuz i cant blind buy glasses.
but yeah, his music is cool af and i think dressing like him would make me cool af too
I saw this sweater in a seventeen music video and bought it :xd:
I bought two fairisle jumpers recently purely because of my undying love for Paul McCartney
Paul is one of the all time greats
I grew up around a buncha blues music, gospel, folk/country, and a whole lotta classic rock. It’s hard to overstate how much of an influence a lot of these folks were on my fashion choices tbh. Hank, Waylon, Johnny Paycheck, Son House, Howlin Wolf, Junior Kimbrough, Link Wray, Ronnie Milsap, Sabbath, the list goes on and on.
