Recommendation for my black/silver style?
I'm currently trying a new style
* Neutral colors (mostly black, some dark grey. occasionally light grey)
* Minimalist, solid colors - no logos/branding or patterns
* Sterling silver necklaces and bracelets (I think the sheen of silver adds a brightness to it that steel doesnt). I ordered some pieces from Luke Zions.
* I may get a piercing
The intention is to have somewhat of a gothy look but elegant refined and not overdone. I want a slight edge, but to still be approachable.
Currently, my go-to outfit is a black tanktop, a solid black unbuttoned overshirt, black jeans and a pair of all black sneakers. But I would like to branch out from that? Are there any recommendations you'd have for this style 1) What kind of jackets should I get for this look? Would a leather jacket - in context of everything else I'm wearing - make it look too edgy and overdone?
2) Overshirts: While I wear mostly solid clothes, I am open to having a neutral color overshirt or 2 with an abstract pattern on if it fits the look. 3) Belts. I'm going to get a black dress belt with a silver metal buckle. Are there any other belts for a casual setting that would work? (Would a eyelet grommet punk rock belt be overkill?) 4) Shoes. I currently have Asics GelVenture 9 and Adidas Kaptir 3 (both in black). And I have Stan Smiths if I want white. Should I get a pair of chelsea boots? Would tactical boots or something like doc martens be overkill for this look?

do you have any existing outfit pictures
This plus silver jewelry + proper ironing lol
cool. my knee-jerk opinion is to get an overshirt that's in a thicker material like corduroy or something, or a leather jacket would work too, since the thin black on thin black (that doesn't match slightly) imo does not look very intentional
i don't think a leather jacket would be overdone
Would a leather jacket on an allblack outfit and silver chains look too edgy’
I really don't think so
I like your point on mixing thin and thick
I would like a more interesting overshirt than the one i have currently
Black denim might be interesting to you as well -- jeans or an overshirt or a jacket etc.
Ive seen some black overshirts with white floral patterns or a bunch of white doves on then.
Yeah i could get a black denim jacket. A dark shade of blak
I also think something interesting would be like a issey miyake-style pleated jacket
Only too edgy if you think it is!
Would the punk rock belt with the holes in it (for very casual outfits) be overkill
this?
imo, also no
Id like to wear rhat but id pair that with specific clothes. I wouldnt try to dress it up
What kind of shoes should i get for the all black look.
I have 2 allblack running shoes and 1 allwhite stan smiths
Re your point 4), I'd also get boots yeah. Black chelseas and black doc martens are not overkill, they're very commonly worn
I’d try a different shirt or a different styling. I like tucking and you could leave it really unbuttoned to create an interesting silhouette
Id like to get some shoes that are fashionable and 1 thats dressy
Ive thought about a pair of fake yeezy foamrunners but those are probably played out rn
Do not wear Yeezys or fakes
Not bc they’re played out
Its okay to go fake if u dont want to fund a nazi but yea i agree
Fakes fund terrorism so no it is not
with all-black dressing I like outfits that have a lot of different black textures. The obvious options are leather & denim. I'd stay away from prints for the time being especially if you have some chains. Imo prints can more easily look "overkill" than a pair of docs.
Id like to get 1 black shoe thats fashionable but casual and another pair that i could dress up
Would leather pants be overkill lmao
yeah, so get docs
I also wouldn’t want to send the impression that I do wear shoes designed by a Nazi even if they aren’t real
So many reasons to just pick better shoes
I don't have a lot of experience with leather pants but I think they look sick as fuck so also going to say no to the overkill there
I also have a bright bubbly demeanor and thst helps offset the edginess
So ill get boots to dress up
What about casual sneakers that look futuristic
I kinda like the adidas 4FWD futuristic type look. Idk
Whether it’s “too edgy” or “overkill” is entirely up to you! Some people really like the styles and bold statements like leather pants and lots of punk motifs but others don’t. It’s all up to you!
I guess we probably should back up a bit and suggest that you go look for some inspiration photos of all-black outfits that do appeal to you
True a lot if this is subjective
Could do some black trail runners
There’s a lot of techy sneakers out there
Mainly i want to be authentic and do the goth look in a way that fits me
Rather than trying to copy all the tropes and be a stereostypr
Pic is white but they also come in black
I also have white clothes.
I wear white poplin shirt with dress pants.
I wear black tshirt + white pants and white sneakers.
I sometimes wear a grey sweatshirt with light colored pants
I do wear some lighter neutral colors in a way that still fits the style im going for
Monochrome is valid!
what do you think about these looks
Id encourage you to look a bit beyond just color when building outfits. Silhouette is extremely important, and IMO becomes even more important when you're using a monochrome palette.
you sound like you might like the mid 2010s era of Saint Laurent for inspo
they did a lot with very slim rockstar-type outfits
it's only edgy if you style it weirdly
like as long as it's not spikes or something I think you're fine
pic 1. love this but id go for a classier leather jacket without the lapels. and straight fit jeens.
pic 2. good
pic 3. id make the shirt white. (i find that black dress shirts create a restaurant host look)
this kind of jacket?
yea possibly
yeah imo i think that would look pretty good with straight black jeans
definitely not overdone
Sandro, Allsaints, SLP for inspo
Though wouldn't buy from those brands
Theory secondhand is a good option
have you found any outfit inspo you do like?
also a nice black graphic tee might be a cool thing to add
also a cool almost black overcoat could be really cool with those, and give you a cool silhouette
im sure there are way better examples of a edgy punky but also not overly macho vibe but right now MGK comes to mind
Hello everyone
hi
I feel qualified to answer this question
sure 🙂
Black and silver is a classic style combo for a reason
You should compensate for lack of color with variations in texture and silhouette
Black leather is a great idea
Rick Owen’s
i think the lack of color could allow for 1 colorful accessory. like a necklace with a shiny red crystal on it.
no
well
maybe
good color combos for this style are black white grey brown green cream
this is a little pricey but i would pair it with a black tanktop
red is a little tricky
Red is tough because with an all black fit it can easily start to look like vampire cosplay
yea for the red, i think it would only do a crystal like that. and nothing else
i like the chains and bracelets hes wearing here
i would caution against wearing large crystals before you know what you're doing with accessories
simple silver jewelry is a good way to start
otherwise it can look costumey
At the risk of being That Guy, I think you should spend some time looking into the ‘darkwear’ designers for inspo: rick owens, ann d, yohji, etc
These will likely be mostly out-of-budget however its a good way to get familiar with more interesting monochrome silhouettes and you can draw inspo from them to start incorporating into your style
what about the watch?
i'd want something thats not too big and masculien, but not too dainty either
Go for a cool chunky silver bracelet over a watch
my plan is 2-3 bracelets on right hand, watch on left hand
chunky watch doesn't exactly scream punk
but it is functional which is nice
yea i dont want overly chunky
the bulova one looks the best, but its a ltitle too big
just start with a timex
where should i get silver bracelets from
Black converse
my feet are very wide, i cant do those (or vans) sadly
i found a great place for silver necklaces https://lukezionjewelry.com/
now i just need bracelets
I’m also a fan of black derbys with a chunky sole, for dressing things up a little but not too much
etsy or vintage
hard to tell if etsy is steel or silver.
Yeah derbys or black leather boots are gonna get you a lot further with this style than sneakers
yea, esp the ones with the teeth on them
if it's silver it will be stamped
do not buy silver that is not stamped
is there anything that stops poeple from stamping steel and trying to pass it off as silver
doc marten mono 1461 time
laws? i think?
iunno
sorry if im being too picky, but i dont think the timex fits the edgy look. its really hard to find the exact watch i want but im gonna keep looking
watches aren't edgy
so
ive been looking for clones of cartier tank and santos. none of them seem to nail it entirely
maybe focus more on the clothes that fit the style you're going for and just wait until you find a watch you like
In addition to black leather, black overcoat would work well too
Heavily recommend starting with black combat boots and going from there
really the cornerstone to a dark, edgy style
i am leaning more toward comfy black futuristic looking sneakers. just because it has a more clean, effortless, cozy look. tho i would like to do combat boots for some outfits
There is room for both
i used to be a sneakers only girlie but the boots just make it so much easier to have a cool looking outfit
and easier to look “effortless” ironically
