Regional Style - Topic of the day 11/26/24

There is no better expert of your region’s fashion that yourself! So why don’t you share with the class what kinda special styles your city/parish/province/commonwealth/country has cooked up. Whether it’s the Chicago Cummerbund or the New South Wales jump suit, tell us what you and your fellow residents wear! Are the rumors about your region true?

The region of Austria I’m in does this very interesting thing where people will literally dress up in full on hiking gear for anything that requires literally the tiniest amount of physical exertion. For activities that I’ll gladly do in jeans and boots (like a 20 minute walk through a forest without incline) there will be people with like 5 layers and walking sticks. A colleague of mine has compared it to people near beaches wearing a lot of swimwear in their free time but I just think it’s weird. Fwiw I’m a transplant from a different part of the country so I didn’t grow up with this

I feel like most places Colorado also dresses fairly poorly but there is a fun blend of western wear and lots of gorp. It's not in the zeitgeist at all but it's fun that wearing a wide brimmed hat or western boots doesn't stand out a ton

I’ve seen people change into climbing clothes and hiking boots to go to the playground with their kids

Liverpool UK More than most places, men dress like shit and women put an insane amount of effort in. There's just a crazy amount of high end make up stores here. Mens stuff is very, very conformist and trends change slow, but at the same time some are very specific to the city (Montirex everything, deeply embedded sneaker culture that goes back to the 70s). Still, theres enough punks and weirdos here, especially since lockdown ended, that you find people wearing more interesting stuff, a lot of students, especially increasing amounts from mainland China, bringing in more streetwear kinda looks.

lululemon and hoka and heydude and on running as far as the eye can see… there’s next to no cohesive regional style. you see the occasional PNW staples (classic gorp, flannel, etc), but for the most part, people in coeur d’alene just don’t fucking give a shit or they’re rich and they’re here on a business trip so they’re here in full suits

depends on the neighborhood ofc, but its v easy to see anything from 80s-90s streetwear to full lemaire straight from the runway type looks

Just got back from Miami and while I loved my time there the fashion was hilariously bad. Truly early malefashionadvice stuff infused with athlesiure in the worst ways

San diego being a beach bum town the vast majority of people here wear athleisure or like board shorts and flip flops every day of the year Like you will go into a michelin star restaurant and see and mf in flip flops

Here in the PNW the height of fashion is a lot of Carhartt overalls and blunnies, flannels and jeans, and gramicci climbing pants with the skeletal bird jackets.

Sounds like Colorado lol FL vibes Minus the good restaurant part Also, fwiw, I feel like this sensibility carries over for immigrants from Austria. I know a couple of families that came to the states and they also do this My hometown’s regional style: rural Florida. So, not great! My current town’s regional style: northeast blue collar, so, not great!

Oakland CA. Mostly anything goes if youve got the confidence, and i think some of the old head activists and creatives are some of the most stylish people ive ever met. But in general things are a bit more influenced by black culture, Berkeley, thrifting, and tech. for me, fashion in urban CA means looking experimental and expressive, but also being able to walk in the hood without looking like an easy mark. A lot of the more “cosplay-y” fashion trends dont fly as well where ive grown up for that reason.

I am in Oklahoma. From what I can tell our regional style is to dress poorly. Some people do wear cowboy boots just as a regular daily wear. Hilariously, usually not with outfits that make sense for them.

Y’all are too hard on your cities I think. One thing that I’ve noticed a few times in dc that I really like are little old ladies matching their outfit to their grocery cart.

I am a recent transplant to the coastal south, and it’s an interesting phenomenon where tons of people here seem to really care about their appearance, but it’s specifically in a very conformist manner. Tons of guys wearing tech polo shirts in pastels, lots of tucking of said polo shirts and wearing embroidered belts (usually with a palmetto tree or American flag), cowboy boots, and some kind of rope hat. Very rarely do you see a guy who just threw on something haphazard, everyone is dressed very intentionally in a very specific way.

I genuinely like PDX style even if it’s not always my own
