Long-form Fashion Content
In the pursuit of knowledge and its potential application to my own style, do you have any long form fashion content recommendations?
- all formats good (visual essay, podcast, article)
- topics of interest: fashion history, base discussion of technique, commentary on contemporary fashion/designers (regardless of aesthetic)
- would avoid "how to dress" or similar content unless it's in service of the above (and/or are funny)
- open to mens- and womenswear but would like to avoid purely womenswear centered content
- doesn't have to be purely fashion content but it would help (especially if in podcast form)
- open to full books that aren't just advertising for a brand but it's a lower priority as my backlog is already an issue lol
Stuff I already subscribe to/like: Articles of Interest, Pair of Kings, Apocalypse Duds, Backseat Driver, Trees & Nylon, Style & Direction/A Little Bit of Rest, OCBD blog, Esque
Stuff I am already aware of: Blammo, Canoe Club blog/podcast, Ivy Style, StyleZeitgeist, Throwing Fits, Fashion Elitist, Ivy-Style.com, BBSP, Bl*ss Foster (the content is great but he is garbage)
Books Already Read: Ametora, Status & Culture, Take Ivy, Black Ivy

Im personall, eyeing Avants "An anthology of westernwear"
I enjoy the Garmology podcast, some really insightful interviews with various creators, brand owners, writers & academics, craftspeople etc!
Avant has a few different great mags out all are great
https://www.youtube.com/@FashionRoadman does good longer vids, especially around runway shows and business of fashion.

Hi! I’m a fashion journalist published in Vogue, GQ, BoF + More. I talk about fashion history, analyse runway shows and create discussions around trending fashion topics.
Bruce Boyer books? I enjoyed True Style. Didn’t agree with everything in there, but it was easy and worth the read.
how do feel about frfr books zeo
i am a slow and methodical reader because my brain is mush; currently reading "slaves to fashion" by michelle miller but my bookload is filled
These are talked about a ton but I didn't see them on your list so I'll add them:
Ametora
Status & Culture (I generally disagree with the conclusions here but it's still interesting)
i am kicking myself for not adding a 'books' section but I've read both marx books...good writer, albeit interesting thesis to status & culture
and thank you all for the recommendations so far 🙂 i will uh, attempt to take a break soon from active consumption/simple fit posting and appreciate the breadth of resources to take in in response
Ok if we’re doing books… The Fashion System by Roland Barthes, Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano by Dana Thomas, The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled Into The Spotlight and Made History by Robin Givhan, Fashioning Identity: Status Ambivalence in Contemporary Fashion by Maria MacKinney-Valentin, and Fashion and The Fleshy Body: Dress and Embodied Practice by Joanne Entwhistle are all excellent
2 and 3 are more fun storyish and the other ones are more academic (which is kind of obvious looking at titles) but they’re all really good reads
That western wear edition of Avast looks super interesting
abusing lame duck privilege to comment - thank you everyone for the recommendations (and@adaptation who came in after the buzzer with a lot of quality reference texts)
also garmentology is great - kinda the midpoint between blammo and TF in terms of energy level
