Saving For Something Big - Topic of the day 10/18/24
A penny saved is a penny earned - I'm guessing Ben Franklin was talking about clothes. How do you plan for a big clothing purchase? Do you prefer buying an individual item or a series of smaller items all at once? How do you budget for this? How do you handle the need to own something RIGHT THIS SECOND in response?

FINANCIAL LITERACY? IN MY FASHION GAMER HOBBY CHATROOM?
Steal everything then it's free
i tend to just buy a lot at once rather than piece by piece. its like im really frugal then when something i have saved gets to a price i want, the floodgates break and i might as well
:nooooo: can’t steal from ssense
But I can use my L3 Btec computing skills for hacking :blobfeelsevil:

how do you handle the need to own something RIGHT THIS SECOND?i don’t. i mean i do. but it becomes a “next paycheck” that turns into “next paycheck” because i’m at least good about not driving myself too deep into debt
are we not all just debtmaxxing?
pay card down from limit > rack it back up again
i have very little impulse control. i have just enough to keep my account functional
but it is extremely satisfying to buy something i’ve been watching for several months
like i got the cord vans i’d been staring at for eons a while ago and i was hyped out of my mind all day
but more generally speaking i can’t save for something unless i can section it off
Saving for something big is so much more satisfying
It’s just tricky because you wait too long and then it’s gone
I literally have no sense of budgeting when I see clothes I like but I can only speak for myself as someone who lives at home during a gap year
I am most definitely making purchases mostly based off impulse
But imo it’s way better filling wardrobe holes than making spontaneous decisions
I find that I just simply don't browse clothes when I know I shouldn't be buying shit or otherwise I'll eventually stumble on something I genuinely like
Identify your gaps so you can be decisive when purchasing
For a while i have been kinda trying to save "clothes money" and spend it in person at cool stores. It works for me because i travel for work so im in places with pretty wide and interesting stores decently often, and its fun to know i have money some money saved to walk into a cool store and be able to buy the cool stuff i want.
I think my purchases are impulse but they tend to be garments / ideas I've sat on for longer
Like I've wanted an cardigan for a few years now and it was like my first (and only) qna I ever asked on the subreddit
I only just recently got the cardigan I've wanted the entire time but that purchase itself was lightningfast
Individual jawns first, I switch between upper body and lower body every year or something so one year I’m pretty much focused on pants and shoes and one year I’m focused on upper wear like shirts and jackets. This year I bought both, though there’s an imbalance in the pants side but it’s been really tough to get good fitting pants at a reasonable price. I don’t really get the urgency of owning something this moment any longer because theoretically I have a version of most modern male fashion staple and if I don’t have it I have something in the same tree.
For big purchases I become a depraved freak, shifting into a learned expert on lee loco jackets or rumors on which contractors made the best junk for the military. Only then, at the deep basin of the dunning-kruger ravine will i place my order
My grails are all way out of reach rn so I just go to the thrift/eBay and try to find a similar vibe. Also sell your old jawns to make room physically/financially for new ones!
For bigger spends I like to wait a few weeks to see if I still like it, but like virt said if you're buying on grailed or smth you might miss out
I waited years to find one of my grails at the price I could accept, I will lurk like an absolute fiend.
I like this a lot. I was doing the same for a while myself.
I found that I was a lot happier when I had experienced something in person. It’s a lot easier to figure if you like something if you can try it on and feel the piece rather than just staring at a Ssense model.
Very real lol I deleted Grailed from my phone and stopped browsing and haven’t bought anything substantial since February. Turns out the clothes you do own get a lot more wear when the hunt isn’t on for something new even if it is subconscious
Everything I want is either $300 or $30 smfh
I have considered getting a job to fund my clothing purchaes, lol
Atm I'm waiting to hear back from Nike :linkBow:
If I get in than I can get a discount on Converse which is sweet :linkCool:
then I could try and get those Rick Owens Converse
cheaper than the geobastards anyway
not with that attitude
@Sam
Ok
Yeah sure
I do kinda want to just save for a fair bit so when I need to get new clothes I can easily pay for it.
set aside x amount per month that you can reasonably go without then only buy clothes from that pool
Imma be real like this discord got hella jokes about blowing up your finances to buy something but if you seriously fuck up your finances on clothes that's the dumbest thing. You don't need any piece of clothing right now
This shits about putting shit on not buying new expensive toys
You don't know shit about whoever is joking about blowing up their finances anyway, 99% of the time they are joking
Just like the dudes blowing your life savings in the stock market are mostly rich enough they don't even notice the loss most of the guys joking about blowing up their finances on designer are not actually suffering whatsoever from it
Basically don't be fucking stupid
I’ve been known to buy dumb shit but yeah I’ve never fucked up my savings, credit, etc to buy anything much less clothes
buy what you can justify buying be it in terms of budget, closet space, fitting into your wardrobe, whatever
I just walked through DSM and touched a bunch of $1800-$3000 garments but that’s just not where I’m at lmao
Simple reality is you can dress really good on a budget, it requires extra effort sure
But some of the best dressed people spend the least
im broke and have been broke for the span of my entire fashion journey. the best way ive found to save for more expensive items is to be very picky about purchases and to not buy a bunch of dumb cheap filler stuff im gonna wear maybe twice because i have issues with it
In a similar vein if you aren't super locked in on your style your impulsive purchases are often gonna be shit
Just due to not actually having a good sense yet
I’ve found having an idea of what you want be it in terms of inspo or a specific list of garments (eg “khaki high waisted pleated pants with extra long inseam”) helps limit stupid purchases
absolutely
Just wanna be clear in general to all the younger people in the discord that people are joking. Don't fuck up your finances cause a stranger on the internet who might be making more money than you've ever had at once is joking about how they "blew their budget"
Go slow, be smart
It will be more fun too if you dont end up buying something your forcing into your style cause of how much you spent
And ya, be able to visualize fits with something before you buy it
If it doesn't come to mind when you're thinking about fits it's probably not the move
And I mean fits plural, not one fit
:bloberm:
you're certainly right, yeah.
i don't need anything atm.
i think the hardest thing for me currently is just not having a coherent sense of style.
:mood:
find what you like in #inspiration or people waywt fits and use that to build a cohesive idea of what you like
dont just brows individual pieces on ssense forever
its way harder to define a sense of style when your looking at one shirt or pair of pants isolated
that comes with time and experimentation really there's no fast track to developing a personal style
ok
i haven't been working on my inspo in the last couple of days, except for that bit i did for the Pages document
🤔
i guess the only real way i could describe my style currently is just real casual
but yeah, one thing i could do is work on the inspiration
I think I'm just also having doubt about whether this is working for me
whats working??? putting on clothes
getting a sense of fashion
fashion skills?
you have been here for like a week
trust
most of the best dressed people in here have been building up there style and colection of cool shit for years
ive been doing this for 9-10 years and still exploring my style
yeah, my first post was on the 5th, so almost 2 weeks
it's not a long time
i think i'm just finding it hard atm
respectfully, no shit. it's a large industry and it's difficult to sort through everything to find what you identify with. you've been doing this for 2 weeks. your enthusiasm is noticed and appreciated and it's perfectly normal to have no clue what you're doing for much longer than the first couple weeks.
just keep putting on clothes. ask yourself what you like and don't like about what you're wearing. you can ask other people this too. then ask yourself if you own anything already that you think could improve on it. if you find there's a trend of thinking your outfits, multiple outfits, could be improved by a specific piece you don't currently have, consider looking around for that item. don't settle for something that sort of or almost is exactly what you want, be patient and find something that you think is just right.
eventually you might get bored and that's when it's time to experiment and try something new and fun. ultimately, this should be fun. but blowing a massive hole in your bank account for a ton of stuff you impulse bought because of the brand or without putting any thought into it doesn't sound very fun to me.
you're doing fine, just remember you don't need to immediately buy everything you think is cool right now this very second
thanks
I just set aside a percentage of income for jawnz and if it’s in the jawnz budget it’s in the jawnz budget. If it’s not, I wait till it’s in the jawnz budget
First year I considered doing a budget
And then if I can’t wait, sometimes I steal from the vinyl budget
Which I do a lot
I went a touch over but the real problem is being outta dough before the end of the year
As well as the Canadian dollar being Monopoly money
There’s no one right way to budget
But at the end of the day, you have to have some semblance of a budget
I just calculated what I spent the year prior on clothe
Went
Whoa too much
And then brought it down to 60% of what I did
I spent like 2 or 3 years buying random dumb shit and consuming hundreds of hours of fashion and clothing information before realizing I was being a dipshit
Don’t do that!!!!!

The 'good' thing about having been insanely broke forever and now having a good job is the holdover mentality of not spending too much out of the fear you might need it next week
Forever blessed to not ever had a credit card
When I got a real job I went completely overboard until I eventually dialed back haha
Yeah my first Im not struggling job I immediately went and bought a pair of Jordan 1s because I played university basketball in converse hi tops
I love that
Gotta treat yourself within reason
Yeah, as a one off its great, not so much as a habit
They got a warehouse
:gigachad: then its doable
booking my flight to montreal now
Have a separate account I dump a paycheck into that is my fun money. I'm frugal by nature so it piles up pretty easily and I'll routinely have 2-3k available without thinking about it. Clothing is kind of odd because I normally only use it for things that are very expensive but infrequent. Even nice clothing (at least by my standards) does not cost as much as say....furniture.
I also pick up some side gigs here and there and get bonuses, which helps too.
This is not a personal finance server, but the value of my clothes versus the value of my furniture isn’t even comparable 😆
We will see where I land. Right now I doubt the value of my entire closet equals the cost of the sectional couch my wife insisted we buy😂
Honestly, it motivates me for side gigs too. Reviewing 750 pages of government grants for like....$400? Hell no. If I have something I want to buy with that though I actually consider it.
some jackets’ll run you a cost equivalent to a nice entertainment center
the joy of buying full leather from a very esteemed company brand new in a very popular design :pdead:
that too
The joy of buying a stupid plastic piece of crap from meme brand covered in someone else’s skin juice in a very popular design :myboy:
Yeah....I suppose I am fortunate in that my style doesn't really align with those🤣 Maybe it will evolve but right now "nice" caps out around $500-600 for me.
theres a mew fit in here with this that goes dummy hard
trust me ik ;)
Seconding the budget thing. I think having one is really important in general and specifically when into a relatively consumption heavy hobby like fashion.
Personally I budget by taking the money thats left at the end of the month (already having taken into account savings etc.) and that goes into the "fun budget" for stuff like holidays, clothing, etc and I then subdivide that for different purposes.
Apart from that I also had a phase where I spent way to much on clothing in the first half of the year bc I just started my first fulltime job and suddenly had a lot more money. Readjusted that by now by just dialing up the amount that goes into my savings account.
As a metal fan I hate this stupid thing so much
nah it’s hard as hell
Indeed
Cult of the lamb vibes :letsfuckinggo:
:LambDancing:
this. i blew my clothing budget this japan trip and i’ve never regretted buying alot on trips. it’s so fun to have an irl shopping experience in such concentrated areas. plus having the memory of picking something up and putting that shit on in another place is one of life’s greatest feelings
I have been saving to buy a rolex. It is probably a psychology decision.
It's also hundreds of millions of dollars of advertisement they put out
Yeah but you really need to experience that to truly understand what you want moving forward. Lots to learn.
no you dont
