hey, new to klipper and printer seems to be working tho the part cooling fan does not come on at all, causing failed prints.

upload your actual printer.cfg and ratos.cfg please. Also a pic of the fan wiring at the octopus
There is a config zip, does that not open?
here
ill get pics
ah, I somehow didn't notice that. Most don't zip them together. Something at work blew up, i'll be able to read in a bit
its an old printer i got from a friend, havent been able to set it up because it required updates and that crashed the printer so had to hard restart.
I also get this error on the klipper screen when printing
okay, in the blurriest pic I see a single blue wire, and right above it a red and black wire. Is that red/black the set going to the part cooling fan?
Also, have you tried manually setting the fan to 100% to see if it turns on?
Yeah I put the fan at 100 and nothing happens
I’ll check the wires in a min, just popped out
kk. We need to make sure that the port that is supplying power to the fan is set to 12V, and that it is actually on
The blue red and black leads to the 4028 fan yes
With that connector
I think the ports are correct, tho I’m not sure if the config is correct to read the fan
And you mentioned about testing the power to the fan. Will I need to buy a volt meter ?
A multimeter would be very valuable for building a printer, yeah
I can't quite see where the jumper is next to that red/black, can you verify that the jumper is on the middle set?
Just found this in the shed haha
score!
They seem to be on the closest set of pins
It’s a bit dusty haha
aha! That means it is 5V. Move it one set to the left
Ok will try, just eating dinner. Thanks for the help, I’ll let you know
My fingers are crossed for ya
Did you notice errors in the config for fan section?
no, that seems fine
Set fan to 100, Removed the wire and tested the pins in the port
This is fab spec
yeah you have it plugged in wrong. Those red/black wires need to be in an always on fan port
https://os.ratrig.com/docs/guides/4028#pwm
look at the image slightly further down that shows the wiring
and make sure you set the jumper for that port to 12v otherwise you will fry your fan
When I change the port, do I need to change the config to read the correct port?
you can't assign those always on port in the config. As long as your blue wire is hooked up to the correct port, that is how you control the fan
My motherboard fan is in that port ?
think about it this way, the red and black wires of the fan can be hooked up directly to any 12v power supply. The blue wire (PWM) is what controls what turns the fan on/off and controls the speed (0-100%)
This is how my current 4028 part cooling fan is connected
oh, you changed it from what we were talkinga bout earlier?
Yeah I tried
This image above is my current wiring
Why didn't you just use the far right port for power AND ground? would have been simpler as you already had the right connector on the wires
No this was how it was I mis identified the cable
The one I thought it was is the heat sink fan
Shall I remove the black cable from the 4028 fan and connect it with the red in the always on port ?
I would, yeah. Remove a variable from the equation while we get it working
I think I fucked it up haha
just depends on how you want to do it. Connecting the ground to the heater has the advantage of not having it turn 100% on boot
Yeah well I might need a new motherboard ffs, good time for an upgrade tho haha
so yeah you want to follow this diagram https://os.ratrig.com/docs/guides/4028#my-fan-runs-at-100-until-klipper-boots
So when testing with voltmeter I slipped and saw a spark now it’s fucked
shiiit 😦
Haha
It’s a octopus 11 so probs worth an upgrade anyway
I got the printer for free so not to bothered
Rat rig v3.1 400
Any recommendations for boards ?
i like my octopus 1.1, its pretty common for ratrigs
alright
yeah octopus is a good board
@TheTik @blacksmithforlife 🇺🇸 I just got my new board, I’m wondering what to do for installation because the machine was already configured right, can I just swap everything over to the new board and turn it on, go through ratOS/local configure set up??
Or do I need to flash anything before I wire up the board, I have no idea haha
you have to flash the board
when in doubt, start over from the beginning of the electronics (just skip the pi install stuff)
Almost finished working it up,
Shall I unplug everything to flash ?
It says to flash the board then do ratOS/local config set up. But don’t tell me how to flash, I’ll look on YouTube to see if there is a guide
yes, just provide power to the board and USB connection to your PI
Right
I have this on the old SD, is this correct or shall I find a new version
follow the documentation and instructions - you aren't so far and it is going to cause you issues
https://os.ratrig.com/docs/installation#preparing-your-control-board
Ok, can I use the printer as the power supply or plug it in separately? Sorry if I’m asking dumb questions
yeah, use the power supply you have that supplies 24v and hook it up to the new board
Thanks
How the fuck does it flash, the ratOS can’t see the board for automatic flash, and when I select as flash it says fails to fetch
I’m such a noob
With my other printers it’s simple haha
you have two options - DFU or SD card
follow the configurator and it is simple too
to use DFU, you have to put it in that mode. Otherwise, download the firmware.bin and put it on the SD card
Omg I think dfu flash is working
It’s insane how you guys just know everything haha
I have been hanging out here since like 2021 - so I have seen most issues already
if you do a discord search, you will see the same issues come up again and again
Seems like the pi isn’t connected to the internet?
you have to reboot the board so it isn't in DFU mode
that is part of the PI setup - https://os.ratrig.com/docs/installation#wifi-or-ethernet
I thought it was connected because I’ve been using it before and just the board being changed. Surly the pi is connected otherwise I won’t be able to connect to the ratOS wizzard
Yeah the pi screen seems to be connected
the PI hosts its own hotspot if it can't connect to the internet
so yes, you can still connect to it without internet
Alright I’ll try to re do the pi config first then flash board
@blacksmithforlife 🇺🇸 can I just ask what this jumper is in the middle of the board, my old board didn’t have the jumper on but this one came with it on?
thats J68, yeah?
Let me check
Yeah
J68
Maybe it connects local power to the pins that power the pi?
Should be the jumper for the 5V supply from the Pi via USB.

I have my pi powered with the car cigarette plug
So I don’t need the jumper right
My old board didn’t have it installed
I think you've got it wrong. This pin ensures that your board receives power from the Pi. Not the other way round. This is also stated in the documentation I have linked.
It’s still loading haven’t read it yet
This makes it easier to flash the board. otherwise you would have to connect it to a power supply. once your power supply has been connected to the board, this jumper is no longer necessary.
I would have liked to copy the text from the documentation, but it's a picture and was too much for me to write. 😂
This is what I get with your link
I don’t need it then
here you go:
Yeah thanks
Now back to where this whole problem started haha
Part cooling fan
you're braver than me, doing it all on mobile 😄
I’ll ad the black to the connector haha
Oh my discord is on my phone, my pc in background
Need to find a new connector, that one only has a red pin haha
Not a bad idea to have a bunch of those connectors and pins spare
Yeah I got some somewhere
Can’t find them might have to try and re use a pin
I have a fan
Loud and powerful, might need to slice at 50% haha
Woohoo!
I slice at like, 30% for PLA
But run your own tests
be sure to mark which message is the answer to help future people searching for answers
How do I do that, just need to mark the correct wiring diagram as the answer to my fan not working.
I think you do a green check mark react emoji
No worries, I'll mark it for you
