Request: suit inspo
I'm getting married next year (likely early summer in an outdoor, mediterranean garden setting) and am considering going down the MTM suit route. Wise people of MFAD, what are your favourite suiting details that I might not have thought of?
Things I know I like:
- higher rise trousers with pleats
- interesting and visibly textured materials
- the way that @The Teenage Gentleman lol dresses
However, this does not seem to be sufficient to pin down what I could look for in a wedding outfit, so please give me some food for thought (even if I end up going down the OTR + tailor route)
Thanks in advance!
P.S. The main question is about general suiting details but I would also happily listen to any fun ideas that relate to my specific situation!

Honestly for a wedding suit I'd just get a very nice and traditional suit in dark navy in a 3-season fabric. MTM could be nice because they'll have a lot of options but imo the risk is fairly high that you end up making a choice you don't like.
The only things I still love about my MTM wedding suit are the general fit (Roger at Hall Madden DC was great) and that I got my name and the wedding date embroidered on the inside of the jacket.
I (very sadly) don't particularly love the fabric. I went with a navy that's not dark enough imo so I just struggle to wear it otherwise now. I wish I'd gotten belt loops instead of side adjusters now as well.
It's really up to your tastes. I find mine have changed a lot with respect to tailoring and so I would have been better served with spending a bit more money on a very killer OTR suit from somewhere like The Armory or Ring Jacket.
congrats- frankly i would also suggest going for as traditional a navy suit as possible for a summer wedding, or at least something pretty close
i dont want to sound like a stick in the mud but generally the styles youre listing are a bit inappropriate for a groom
It's his wedding he can do whatever he wants
i didnt put quite enough emphasis on generally
pretend i circled and underlined that
you can absolutely have fun with it but it will draw attention
I originally wanted to get something different for my wedding suit - like a nice pattern or something similar. But after thinking it through I didn't want to upstage my wife and I also wanted a suit I could wear at other events. I ended up with a navy suit as well and I really love it. I did go MTM with some different details like patch pockets and side adjusters but ultimately if you want the suit to still be wearable for other events you probably want to show some restraint
FWIW I went with NMWA's MTM program which I highly recommend but that's only if you can easily make it to NYC
I like wearing suits for fun and I already had a dark suit so I went for something SLIGHTLY more offbeat (brown microcheck kinda thing) but I agree that if you're not a suit guy/likely to wear tailoring much a really nice dark navy suit would be great to have for any time you DO need one. other weddings etc. If you ARE a suit/tailoring/formalwear guy or have a particular style you're passionate about then absolutely go for something fun that you'll love tho, especially if you can comfortably afford it
Thanks for replies so far! It's a fair point about the risk involved in doing something non-traditional. My fiancée is pretty fashion-forward and our wedding is shaping up to be non-traditional in some respects (very small in size and in an unusual setting) but I'll have to muse on (a) the chances of pulling it off and (b) the rewearability aspect.
Thanks also for the specific recommendations but I neglected to mention that I'm based in the UK
Microcheck sounds like a cool idea! I think I'm in a similar boat in that I have a couple of suits that I like including a mid navy one and a dark charcoal one and so feel an urge to make any new addition ✨ different ✨ but maybe this isn't a sufficiently good reason to go totally off piste
ooo idk what your budget is but go to paris and get a husbands suit lol. drakes london does beautiful stuff too. for something less pricy there's suitsupply, though the fabric options will be more limited.
tobacco (or whatever colour you like) linen would be really nice and easy to dress down/split into separates if you wanted to thrash it later.
Good question re: budget, I don't totally know yet. Probably in the region of £1k (which I appreciate is only limping into the edge of MTM/MTO territory). I absolutely adore the look of Drake's clothes but historically haven't been able to afford any 😅 . Not familiar with Husbands but will take a look!
I actually bought a stone coloured double-breasted linen/cotton suit earlier this year on clearance. It fits pretty well but it's wrinkle city. Still, perhaps the answer is to wear something I already own!
i think like always, this despends on the vibes you want to go for @korgha ! Do you wanat somthing sleek, dandy, ivy, etc?
remember that there's always the opportunity to have the cermony outfit and a reception outfit!
personally i would do a tuxedo for both because i think thats the best outfit for an occasion
but i think deciding on a POV would help as well as if you want to wear this suit again in the future apart from the wedding
It's a good question! A couple of different ideas I had:
1. my fiancée is considering going for a dress with some 50s influences, so I was wondering about some 50s details on a suit (I think I read a blog post of yours about this some time ago...)
2. as the wedding is going to be in a Mediterranean garden, I could go for some kind of more casual, "Riviera" style. I seem to remember seeing some cool inspo albums in this direction back on reddit but I would have to try and unearth them and see if I think it could work
3. as the wedding is going to be in a garden, I could incorporate some green and/or floral elements. I have fewer ideas about what this could look like
I find it hard to work out what could actually look good and what would just look odd/costumey 🤷♂️
I have this article on summer dressing: https://alittlebitofrest.com/2024/07/28/how-to-stay-excited-to-dress-up-when-its-warm/
but in general, im thinking maybe a dark brown summer suit, maybe sandals or loafers, could do a chambray shirt and a grenadine tie
ooooorr
tuxedo with black sandals lol
if doing a suit, you could try to find a 40s/50s tie that is black/silver that has a funky vintage design on it (but its tasteful)
like something like this is fun and "formal"
If I was in the UK I would go to Anglo Italian and get a slouchy DB suit made
This is a gold mine! Will start digesting
Just had a look and those are some beautiful suits 😳
my only qualm with anglo is that the pants are sooooo tapered
I've never worn any of their tailoring but I've read that their house cut is very different from how Jake and the rest of the staff model it. That said if they were to go MTM they could ask for a less tapered hem
I will confess I actually love a taper (which may make me a :mfad: fraud)
well thats good lol its sooo tapered on jake and fabio lol
like this is too much imo lol
not skinny but it doesn't really work with the drap-ier jacket
Totally agree
