Wearing Clothes the "Wrong" Way - Topic of the day 9/10/24
From pants as shirts to shirts as pants and more, what are some ways in which can or have worn clothes the "wrong" way for a fit? What led to you taking this leap? What are some of the benefits and some of the drawbacks in wearing clothes in non-standard ways?

there is no way to wear clothes wrong, cmv
like either your fit sucks as a whole or it doesn't
maybe I'm wrapping my brain back around to thinking that this is what the prompt is actually about anyways
applications of single garments and manners in which they're worn can be incongruous with the rest of the fit and thus lead to a bad fit
but you could switch them or switch everything else I guess
sometimes i wear tabis without the appropriate socks i just scunch up normal socks and keep it moving
Who hurt you
Some things that are "wrong" that lately have struck me as having potential:
- Boxer shorts or tucked in button downs sticking out of the bottom of tiny shorts
- Accessorizing by holding objects like a pink wig or a houseplant
- Prescription swimming goggles as glasses/tinted goggles as sunglasses
- Pressing wrinkles into garments (diy Prada)
wearing tabi socks in normal shoes just to feel a bit freaky
But fr I remember Charlie posting some ideas about wearing clothes the wrong way, someone could probably do some digging to find some. Examples include- wearing jeans with the legs over ones shoulder so it looks like a vest, wearing shirts backwards or upsidedown, creative use of boxers as Ply points out,
I’m a big fan of the two shirts skirt
long ago before i started learning about fashion and how things should fit i got myself a varsity jacket that i really like, problem is it's kinda huge on me and i look ridiculous in it (almost reaches to the top of the inseam of a jeans that i'm wearing, not to mention varsity jackets really don't fit my style). the benefit is that i'm wearing something i like and the drawback is that it looks pretty bad on me, even though i really like it
Wearing shirts as pants gives you a practical pooping hole 👍🏻
really digging the goggles thing. hits me with like…jet set radio future kinda vibes
An unpopular opinion of mine. I hate all the supposed rules for suits. If you look good, you look good. I don’t care if you have a certain button done up.
well that is because they're supposed
though if you wear a paisley suit to a formal event ur gonna get glared at and it's frankly probably deserved
:bartoascend:
Do you have an example of a suit fit breaking one of these rules that you think looks good?
:meat:
I constantly steal valour in my fits, does this count
His tabis after walking more than 50 feet
Speaking of suit stuff what about that idea where someone has part of their dress shirt tucked in but the other part sticking out
meatwater's most recent fit does it, and i think some other people do it semiregularly (De La Joel, maybe Billiam, me one time lol)
@zeometer I remember seeing your fit that had it
I think you mighta typod
Well "this" does have the same letters as "shit" lol
Shit is true
People who break tailoring rules should be put to death
I mean more the arbitrary rules about only doing up the top button and so on. Wear it however you like has always been my view.
I'm all for breaking rules if you want and it looks good. I'm asking if you have examples to support your "unpopular" opinion.
Ime those fits either look bad, or depart far enough from traditional tailoring that the rules simply don't apply and so you're not really breaking them in my eyes.
I'd be hard pressed to find a Suit Supply suit fit with just the bottom button done that looks good
Yes BUT whats the intention and what are you looking to do when you flaunt a pretty basic rule that makes it easier to sit down AND show off your high rise pants
damnit beans
legit the only exception i can think of that looks good is a 6x1 DB jacket but that's by design
i am willing to see evidence to the contrary
yeah you have 3-roll-2 SBs and 6x1 DBs but these days it's by design like you say and the innovation in tailoring is pretty distinct from the traditional forms where the "rules" are more likely to apply
I’m ngl I don’t understand a thing y’all are saying which is just furthering my belief that the only rule is ‘it has to look good’
The one I always think of is “don’t wear suit with sneakers” (very do-able when done right), or the MANY color rules for pairing suit w/tie w/shoe w/shirt etc
I like to put belts over elastic waist pants and tuck my shirt in
Yeah the Golden Rule is Dress Not Dorky or something like that
Idk I dropped out of theology school
I mean gsh pulled it off
they don’t dress like a dork
The rare moment I find myself completely agreeing with Art
I think the "wrong" thing I do constantly is wearing a black shirt with tailoring, and i think that rule is often completely overblown
As long as it looks intentional its fine imo
i did a lot of wearing 'thing A as thing B' when i was just starting to figure out what/how i enjoyed clothes and while i don't do that as often it's generally a good way to get out of a rut or source out ideas, ex https://i.imgur.com/P9nfVnN.jpeg

but also things like mixing leathers, mixing metals, a too-long or too-short tie, or wearing orphaned suit jackets in some circumstances can all work IF the fit is good.
what i think hinders people is they think about this mostly in abstraction, when actually attempting the fit is more impactful
