Closet Purge - Topic of the day 6/10/24

How do you decide when it's time to retire items from your wardrobe? Have you ever had regrets over purging a item? Or holding onto items for longer than it's worth?

I haven't purged anything from after I started mindfully buying clothes. I think I need to start getting rid of the first generation stuff including some precious SEH Kelly gear that I'm just too damn big for now. It's painful I get very very attached to stuff.

Whenever I notice I don’t wear a thing or it doesn’t fit anymore or I just plain feel like my closet gets too big I sell some stuff. This has worked fine for me so far and has kept up with my changing tastes while still keeping my closet manageable.

my item purges so far have been just old stuff from high school that i realise the design and or color really isnt doing anything for me in terms of face and body body second no wait just overall face and body not doing anything if its a shirt i just move it to the wear at home pile of folded clothes in my wardrobe for pants well that depends on cut like is it timeless would i wear it again in future trends and look great? no its off to charity pile. jackets the same but where it goes depends on size, if it was from when i was younger i give away to friends(have a lot of shorter smaller friends) if its bigger then charity

Generally I don't mind hanging onto stuff for a while, until it feels like emotional baggage... like I don't actually enjoy the pants but I feel the sunk-cost indebtedness to hold onto them cause I used to like them. Thats my cue to donate

I've purged a ton of stuff, mainly because it doesn't fit anymore

I never sell so I usually just drop my old stuff off at one of the nearby secondhand stores. Shouts out to whoever got my old rick drop last week🫡

Generally hold onto things too long but selling/getting rid of clothes is essential

In the past I fluctuated up and down in weight considerably and accordingly kept most of my clothes "just in case" something happened, for fear I'd waste my money on throwing things out AND have nothing to wear. Once I got past the initial exodus of fast fashion stuff, I don't purge things as much because I don't buy things as much. I think my tastes have stabilized enough and my ability to find good items has increased to where I'm less impacted by a bad buy.

I've still got stuff I brought twenty years ago. I should probably purge.

I’ve sold most of my designer shit save for a couple pieces I really love and some dumbass Gucci and Dior logo shit that I wear when I want to look like an absolute ass-hat Way I see it is I’ve pretty much found a style I like and I have no intention of “growth” from here. This is endgame afaic

I purge when my clothes don’t fit in my dresser or when I move apartments. Never regretted giving anything away. I retire old clothes when I no longer wear them on at least a semi-regular basis or they no longer fit.

owh this reminds me so remember the clothes i retire to the wear at home pile? yea so when those get holes its time to just throw away, not talking tiny moth holes like you sit down and yer very loose pants decide to just rip holes

I literally just got rid of a garbage bag of clothing - I just hadn't worn it honestly. When I realize I hadn't even thought about it for a while or worn it, it's time to drop it

i'm honestly impressed at myself bc my wardrobe is smaller than i took full stock of it for the first time and i've basically been buying non-stop for the last 8 months

Some stuff is sentimental tho. I have some old scouting uniform stuff I'll never get rid of

I am currently in the process of getting rid of a lot of stuff I got in my semi-fashion conscious era. Just stuff that I got for cheap on the flea market and that is starting to not cut it because i bought stuff somewhat aimlessly Basically for 5 years or so my uniform was metal merch tee + some sort of baggy trouser. At some point after covid I started to actually think about what stuff I wanted to have but it was baby steps and I did not really have the attention for detail I have now. It was mostly "oh, i like this shirt and its like 5€" And a lot of that is starting to show its limits because the cut is too slim/the collar is wrong, the rise is too low etc. So now I need to get rid of all that stuff I think because of that experience and my frustrations with "wrong" items I have become a lot more careful about what I get which has been a bit paralyzing at times

Yesterday. Basically if I come across something that I haven't worn in a year or so (exclusions to seasons of course) or I'm not holding onto because sentimental reasons, if goes. Like Weeg said, if I can't imagine wearing it anywhere, I set it free. If I get something that is better and replaces an item, goodbye.

I have a small wardrobe so I’m continually purging. I enjoy the continuous process, but also have massively slowed down as I enjoy almost everything I own now. I donate anything I know won’t immediately sell (within about a month).

I am moving this month so this is something I am dealing with. I have gotten rid of a lot of stuff that does not fit from my early MFA days. LuxeSwap is my go to for purging nicer items. The rest I give to GoodWill.

Most recent purge - everything but the box and jacket I either gave to a friend or donated. Literally pulled out every article of clothing I own, put it on, and made a decision about it.

I have a similarly sized box as the one pictured labeled “aspirational” and if I don’t teach for it either before I move next or by 2025 it’s getting sold or donated If the condition, fit, or style isn’t gelling with what I think I want to wear in the next year and I haven’t reached for it at all it goes in the memory hole and gets endless sunshined. I only remember one piece not pictured above and it wouldn’t fit me today anyway 🙂

I have a few items I nearly donated but then found they work really well with a newer piece, which has given them a sort of new lease of life. It’s made me more careful about getting rid of stuff too quickly. That being said, I should probably sell a bunch of stuff I only reach for a couple of times a year

I'm very new to fashion but my history with purging is complicated I'm the younger child of my family and both my mother and my sister are addicted to fast fashion (I'm trans) And I fit the same size as them. So anything they didn’t feel wearing anymore was passed to me. So I never had to buy anything, but also neither had anything I really like to wear And wore the same 10 items I liked the most until they would worn out (including tshirts) It got so bad I had probably 20 sweaters. I live in a tropical area, I only needed them in the coldest days of autumn and winter. Also over twenty sets of gymwear I began looking into fashion as a part of my transition. I needed "men's" clothes and needed to know enough about how they fit me In the beginning I bought a lot of stuff too small for me, redundant clothes, etc. because I didn't know how to buy clothes Meanwhile I was (and am) doing a massive purge on the things others parked at my wardrobe The process has been taking almost a year now I get sporadic surges of energy where I remove about tem items then rest for some weeks I got more and more personal with each iteration. My first criteria was just removing things that clung to my curves. Then it progressed to avoiding things in women’s cuts/styles unless it was intentional. After some months I started on "is it even the right size for me" as I learnt about fit The wardrobe is finally beginning to look empty so I'm finally moving to the subjective steps "Do I even wear this/does it fit my style/do I like it"

You run into some bizarre situations when you have a wardrobe made of others leftovers because Whering made me notice that although I had enough sweaters and gymswear to not repeat pieces in some months, I had zero jeans and no plain graphicless t-shirts so my purging also followed, to a lesser extent, thrifting about half the clothes in this pic were thrifted

I bought a bunch of dress shirts at what I now know to be the wrong sleeve length. Need to get rid of those and some suits I never wear
jawntanamo_bae
I “purge” when I run out of closet space, however I’m almost out of space and there’s not really anything I want to get rid of. So perhaps I just need more closet space.

owh ask a 3rd party to join in on deciding on pieces you want to get rid of especially a person thats like the opposite of hoarding like they throw away so much they should start keeping stuff
jawntanamo_bae
Only if they dress better than me
menace
menace3w ago
owh yea totally that too if not theyll make you keep the most wrong stuff for sure
