BRICK - Topic of the day 4/24/24
We've talked about this before but at the time the server had 10k fewer people than it does now. What's your biggest bricked fit? What makes it a brick? What were you trying to do and why didn't it work? What have you learned?

Nobody ready to fess up? Just look back in #waywt for the first outfits I posted, just about a year ago.
I've talked about this before. I went to CDMX and my goal was to buy a knit like this one that Peter Zottolo got and then copy the fit. It's an incredible piece but I've struggled to make it work and have a number of bricks tied to it.
That cardigan looks really big and imposing. Even on its own, it almost looks like too much.
I’ll buy it off you

The first one in the sun is my first attempt. The chinos are bad in many ways and I failed to capture any of the vibes that Peter created with his.
The 2nd fit is better but not by that much really. The cut of the pants is poor and I feel like the knit still is really awkward.
Double denim from March of 2023. It’s bad! The jacket is too small and dated! The shoes don’t work with the outfit! I’m cuffing raw hemmed jeans!
Gimme dat
I like cuffing raw hems sometimes actually. But not here
I'm def keeping it lol. Sorry to disappoint
back in the wild wild west when r/mfa was still good i was an occasional poster party because i was too poor to afford common projects and partly because i posted stuff like this https://i.imgur.com/aJS4WvL.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/pvNfj2h.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/3dkjly1.jpeg
u stink
not the 3 part fit pic :xd:
Double denim from March of 2024. It’s good! I use brown leather elements to break things up so I’m not just a denim blob! Things fit better! My photography is better!
This from the one of the earliest themed waywt where we had to flip a brick. In the first photo i was just getting into fashion and had a really poor understanding of how to put a fit together. I was just kinda throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what stuck. The revamp really highlighted how my understand of fit composition has improved alot
Fit pic triptych
Yall don’t even know
formality clash, no real intention, sperry's. the pants fitting as well as they did was an accident but we got better 👍 after a decade :xd: it's kinda the neanderthal ancestor that led to stuff like this once i figured out to buy stuff that fit and that casual clothes weren't necessarily basic
Finally cracked the code a bit here. Black tank is a poor choice but the rest flows nicely and the knit stands out, but as a cool item rather than being disjointed
also my photography is far better lol
haters mad
Ive had too many to count and ill not share the worst of the lot, but generally my most regretable bricks are from trying to force an item that just isnt doing it. For example, these jeans were a very cool fabric the fit just aint it
Had a ton of bricks during 2020/2021 during covid and while I was moving my style from punk/streetwear to more ivy style stuff
Also have a tendency to take a bad fit and try to make it better by throwing more shit on top (usually poorly done), such as scarfs in the previous example or here
or try to do weird stuff with layering and not self filtering, this one should have never left the drawing board
all of these are mistakes I continue to make
I don't have many if any old fit pics around (without trying to recover my old mfa reddit account lol) but I think these two from here were pretty bricked when I first got these loafers last summer and didn't really know what to do with them
Skinny tapered cropped wool trousers were bad, I donated them shortly after 😅
2nd fit was instantly improved when I just put my chucks back on
supreme shrek shirt is crazy
I didn't know I needed that
far more recent example, dec 2023 vs apr 2024. the issue in the brick isn't so much the graphic tee but it doesn't really make sense with everything else and causes the eyes to go all over the place (plus the pants do not fit well because they're women's lol). the current fit has the same vibe but the shirt becomes a focal point and the jacket, pants and hat all work with it
Baby’s first Ivy fits circa 2020
I still have it lol
I’m begging you to pair this with some cowboy boots or engineers
I was trying to avoid going too howdy by wearing brown service boots here, but in hindsight I should have gone more howdy. Additionally, I think the black tee and denim jacket isn’t working here and instead it should have been some sort of western shirt with a tank.
ngl this is the weakest brick I've ever seen lol
Nah it looks real bad to me lol
This pose looks like he booped his own head in whack a mole
I deleted all my posts in #waywt for a reason. Give me another year and I might be emotionally ready to look at those again.
I think my biggest brick was trying to make some kind of YSL fit with the skinny jeans work. I have no pictures fortunately.
If I ever revisit that project i need to think of a skinny-jeans replacement
also this
In general this suit unfortunately is low-key a brick and an example why you should stay from MTM until you have some experience
ngl this is the weakest brick I've ever seen lol
What’s wrong with the suit
Maybe sleeves are a tad short??
The fabric has too much sheen and you see every fucking wrinkle from three miles away. Also pants are to short but that is fixable.
sleeves to short, really?
No the sleeves are perfect. The sleeves on the shirt in the pic may be a tad short
No im looking at things bc i dont see what’s wrong with it
I think my sleeve perception is just skewed because of all the vintage sport coats with too short sleeves that I own
ah, yeah, agree
Thanks for saying that 🙂 Perhaps its also just subjective
Honestly the only thing I would change on this suit is to lengthen the pants and add pleats to them. This is a sick suit
Pleats would look awkward bc the fabric is too thick for it, unfortunately
yeah
I should have went with a fabric that was less thick
wrinkles would be less noticeable and the fabric less stiff
on the other hand its extremely velvety and feels super nice
well. Now I have it and will have to make it work I guess
On the other hand I love that suit and its my baby.
I think the sheen really is the main issue, bc you see every fucking irregularity in the nap of the corduroy
Omg
dl over creatch is insane styling
@Salo my swag is different
Mew with the wrong trousers build
awesome brick-colored suit!
lol
I love how the last two "bricks" are actually pretty good
I’m sure it’s not my biggest one lol, but I posted about this yesterday, getting some great advice. I often struggle to integrate this cardigan, which disappoints me a bit since I always love Isabel benenato on other people.
I have been struggling with cardigans too.
So, I actually went back and looked at the first few pics I posted in #waywt. They are...kinda bad. But weirdly I'm not sure I can call them bricks. I didn't know what I was doing, but I look at them now and I respect what I was trying to do.
And I wonder if now I've just found a comfortable rut to ride in for awhile.
Makes me resonate a lot with what I've heard people say: the only real brick is the outfit you don't try wearing.
curious, are these "bricks" universally and perpetually considered to be bad outfits? or is it because now - or at that point in time - the outfit is (or was) out of fashion? or (and i think probably this has a lot to do with it) is it the wearer just not 100% feeling it and being extra critical of themselves?
Any of these is right depending on the circumstance
maybe im just bad at this whole fashion thing (highly probable) but a lot of these look ok to me
For example Art’s double denim is really only a brick cause its a bit dated. My brick is bad in that it was composed poorly and i dont think it would have looked good even during a past trend and Spaghettis brick really isnt bad at all but it seems he just wasnt feeling it
The clay is different however it becomes a brick at the end of the day
gotcha. the more i read here the more there is to learn. appreciate this discord being more than just a bunch of people talking shit to each other all day long
i'll sacrifice this as a brick and try to analyze it:
1) brought the flannel on it's own bc i liked the bright colors but honestly idk if this is a fit in my wardrobe
2) white tees are... so boring. i dislike the fit of uniqlo's oversized airism, though i should at least try the flannel w/ my cropped beige tees (abercrombie my new love)
3) i feel like fatigues/flannels are giving netural ass vibes here against each other and nothing else i'm wearing is really adding any flavor at all
4) if i had to say something nice, then i think the colors are pretty inoffensive and im sure there's merit somewhere with an more interesting hat, shoe or bottom entirely, but i don't care much for this fit. this fit is inoffensive in a way that's offensively boring
Yeah bricks are subjective
and honestly relative too
One person’s brick could be another person’s gold
the 1-2 punch of getting 'better' at dressing is being more cognizant of what is a brick and how and imo, being less burdened by bricking
Ironically the less you worry about bricking the more fits you get off
I'll share a recent brick. I wear double denim pretty often, and I wear it with confidence, but sometimes it just doesn't go. With this one I think the colors were off. Darker wash shirt over the lighter was pants didn't fit. In the past I've had more success with the pants being darker or the shades being much closer together. Also the other pieces just aren't tying it together. The hat doesn't work here. I don't like the belt and shoes with it.
The big problem here I think is with how I put the fit together. I went with combos that I'd done in the past that worked well but without an eye to the entire fit and it just didn't mesh together.
Jeez yall are so harsh on yourselves like 80% of these aren’t bricks
Also not a brick imo
i think it's close but just not coming together. and maybe a little harsh on myself, but I wanted a recent one
i got an old total brick
let me fetch it
monochrome failure
Some of yall have clearly not bricked recently and need to push your limits harder
There's a common theme here
I been throwing shit at the wall to figure these pants out
I think all of these could work with a sleek boot
Or a very very chonky one
Lotta bricks but we got some good fits too
Nah I don't think those are salvageable
The core thing is letting the pants speak, all of those distract or clash in some way
The good fits use texture/cut to support em
That's where I'm at
I think the cropped dress shirt is the best one yet but I wouldn't classify any of those 4 as bricks personally
Yellow is super loud tho lmao
That said some of the shoe choices could be improved
Need loafers not boots with the bear sweater and idk the converse aren't hitting it for me with the textured tee
I think 2 is the only true brick here
I think the tops in the other 2 clash
Espicially the denim
I actually like the denim. I think it can work
I think the black polo somewhat works but the jacquard is too much
Denim would work better with other pants imo, that denim over a shirt and tie is a fit I've been marinating tho
This is really inspiring to hear, because I feel like I do this a lot. I feel like I want to level up my skills at composing outfits, but at some point you have to say "fuck it", put it on, and look in the mirror.
I do a lot of vibing in the mirror and just posting for feedback
Like my main way of figuring things out
My fit battle cabal can attest I was throwing so much random shit at the wall
To figure the fits out
And so what if a few of those outfits are bricks. Doesn't matter...you got cool pants.
I gotta do that zeometer copycat post and show my process is a lot of iterations
Sometimes I spend an hour in front of the mirror and cook, other times I get super frustrated and go back to a fit I know works
Oh yeah...I gotta post a pic of Birkenstocks with coat and tie, just because Zeo said I seemed like the kind of guy who would wear that.
Might be good, might be :brick: , but Zeo was 100% right that I should try it.
Running fit journals in #fashion-discussion would be pretty cool
would go crazy with one of these
individually fun pieces (except the glasses) but terrible compilation of all of them and terrible pose to top it off
most of my historical bricks in a nutshell
Gimme those
It looks fine dummi
