Vase mode seam?

I am printing some chrismas ornaments in vase mode. I am not able to eliminate what looks like a seam. Attached are some pictures of the orca slicer view and the actual print. They both show a seam. When printing, the printer does not stop or slow down at any position. I have double checked that I have "spiral vase" checked. This defect looks more pronounced in areas where the slope gradient is large. Any suggestions?

Is it the stl mesh itself? The slicer clearly shows the seam as well (without making it a seam since vase mode) so It looks like the model itself has that seam

The orange picture is the sliced view. I looked at the stl mesh and it is VERY dense and shows no seam artifact. That view is attached.

yes exactly, so the slicer thinks there is a seam there and therefore puts it in the sliced model. very likely the model and not your print settings. Try a different model in vase mode, you shouldnt get a seam

I dont understand the comment. The stl file has nothing that resembles a seam, so why would the slicer think there is one there?

that I dont know, but since the slicer shows the exact same pattern I doubt its a printer issue.

I just tried it in orcaslicer, Once vasemode is enabled it puts that ridge here. No vase mode shows a smooth surface (at this position).

Prusaslicer shows the same issue, rotating the model also puts this ridge always roughly pointing to the origin in PS, roughly pointing top left corner in OrcaSlicer. So its not the mesh. So sadly I don't know how to fix it, but it is clearly a slicer / vase mode issue.

I created a perfect cone in fusion360 and brought it into orcaslicer and prusa slicer. Both of these slicers created some seam artifact in vase mode. Since both slicers are based on the same code base, I am not surprised to see the same results. Thanks for trying. I may give Cura a try..... This is not a huge deal, I was just surprised to see this happen. BTW, my wife loves the results.

I have not tried to print it, but Cura also shows some strange artifact in the preview mode. Weird.....

super weird that even cura has the same problem. Maybe they use a similar algorithm to slice in vase mode

I tried my cone in PS and Cura. Cura shows what looks like a seam in the preview so I brought the gcode into a CAM viewer and got what looks like a very nice cone. I did the same with PS and the gcode viewer does show some seam artifact. So the slicers are not generating the same vase mode code; Cura appears to be much better

The nice output from Cura is only possible if the smoothing option is enabled. If turned off, the gcode results look much closer to PS. I don't see any smoothing option in PS or OS.

Hot off the Press!! Orca Slicer "just" came out with a new alpha version which may fix the seam in spiral mode. https://github.com/SoftFever/OrcaSlicer/releases/tag/v1.9.0-alpha It looks like they adapted some of the Cura smoothing routines into OS. Tried it on my cone and the results look promising.

The seam artifact in vase mode is definately a slicer issue that may be fixed in a new verion of Orcaslicer. Attached is a picture of an ornament printed without smoothing on the left and with smoothing on the right. Since this is an alpha version of Orcaslicer there may be other bugs but it looks like they are on the right track to fix the vase mode problem.

Oh interesting. And nice that it is already being fixed
