This recent one reminded me that I've honestly been drifting a little far from my core style and need to be more careful in purchasing clothes so I don't have too much breadth in my wardrobe. So in the future, moving back towards this, especially with my purchases and how I craft outfits. Need to think harder about what I want to achieve with a purchase.
This is always what I have wanted to achieve in fashion, preppy streetwear with loud pieces. I love ALD, love the prep and streetwear collision they started in the last few years. This basically is what I love about that, elements of prep but married with streetwear and some loud standout "look at me" elements. Kinda hard to explain but I love the subversiveness of the mix of prep with streetwear and dressing down a style mostly associated with insufferable WASPs.
It also just lets me wear streetwear that I really like (Supreme, Pleasures, Brain Dead, etc) in a way that feels authentic to myself given my background.
I think this is the most ‘me’ outfit I’ve ever put together. Simply put, it’s the ‘ALD at home’ look that I’ve been really into, but to expand on it it’s what I feel is my best execution of prep/ivy/athletic wear with just a whole bunch of broken menswear rules. It’s obviously a very editorialized look so not necessarily something I’m going for every day but it’s something I can point to when someone asks me what vibe I want to hit
It's very cool to see both of you inspired by ALD and have both look very different
This is your best work for sure
Perfectly executed use of a loud pattern
This is my favorite outfit I've made so far. I love bigger silhouettes and this was the first time I felt fully satisfied with how my clothes fit. I made a thread asking for help yesterday and got a lot of great feedback, and while I think my best and most fun is still ahead of me, I'm happy with this one. We need to go wider.
im not sure how to articulate but the combination of the casual knit / playful pants hits the concept that i want to build off going forward. it's definitely been a lot of refining what i like. i like knits/sweaters, but it's fun stuff like graphics/tiedye/colorblocks that excite me than a solid color scheme, and so on. i've always wanted to move in this directon for a while now but i've really begun to hit a stride in narrowing it down
My name is Will. I’m an ex sneakerhead and supreme hypebeast (i cringed typing that). I then discovered MFA and became a basic bastard. Now im sort of a mix of all that (minus the hypebeast part). I love prep/ivy, streetwear, new england and workwear fashion. I just want to get better at styling and layering atm. Chuck and charlie are my main inspo 🫡
Its my favorite outfit of yours. Never inspoed something so fast.
Yeah this shit was extremely 🔥 art
Sounds like a fun style! Really hope you narrow it down completely. I also love that knit <a:AH_Bongocat:749422787369631858>
I'm really into this outfit because it's grounded in sorta fall, academia-y colours that I often gravitate towards while maintaining a set of loud colours that I feel are more accurate representations of my personality. Hope y'all agree. If not, fck u!!!
I think I wanna go for streetwear with minimal preppiness. Somewhere between these I guess with a hint of sluttiness and some avant garde influences mixed in
And I’m very workwear influenced at work. I think I wanna try to be more avant garde and dress way more casually
More graphics too maybe
One of the first WAYWT posts I made is still the most core version of what I'm going for. I'm starting to experiment with accessories and build out my wardrobe for a little bit of variety from lessons learned on here. I love occasional traditional tailoring but soft casual suiting like EG two pieces, tweed jackets and knit ties in more understated mid outfits will be my daily driver forever. I described myself as Banshees of Inisherin-core before and it's close to the truth. I'm trying to wear the fantasy of working class tailoring and whatever the aesthetic of that concept means to me.
Couldn’t agree more
I AM STILL FIGURING SO MUCH OUT. I was broke for so long and finally have a bit of adult money. Here are three fits that really made feel good but they are all v different
I’ve been loving your silhouettes this past year
This is a cute fit, looks very cozy
Thank u ❤️
Jeans in #1 fuck
I needa dig thru my camera roll and find myself
Either of these two fits. They’re sitting at the intersection of my fashion interests in vintage/secondhand clothing, my working background (construction -> education), and my other hobbies (backpacking, gardening, art). The fit is just where I want it to be, slouchy and comfortable, and the color palette is boring but familiar.
I’ve definitely done the rounds from the basic bastard -> raw denimhead -> MFA House Stlye -> streetwear -> to today. I’ve always tried to keep outdoor gear in the rotation but it’s only recently that I feel like I’ve hit my sweet spot with 90s-00s stuff.
A big moment for me was tracking down a Patagonia SST after getting the Story MFG forager jacket (which I’d wanted forever) and realizing that most of the modern designers I liked were riffing off that era, and the vintage gear was just more wearable for me.
I was pretty happy with today's fit so I've included it. I'm vibing somewhere in the middle here. I'm a pretty plain guy, with a plain job and plain interests. I've been branching out a little in the past year with some more interesting items, with patterns or colors I'd previously have avoided
Some of the departures from this type of style are a fun experiment for me, but I'm pretty happy staying in my lane, even if that lane is kind of the 'default' here.
I’m also an extremely basic guy who’s a bit over experimenting. I recently realized I just really value wearability. It’s helped dial back on buying when I remember I wear this pair of jeans anytime I can. I just like basic prep and workwear and sneakers in 5 total colors.
Green jacket blue jean dad shoe goated ensemble
This fit has everything I love to wear (big shirt, skirt, weird shoe), has my favourite silhouette and has a certain moodiness that I want to to bring to every look in the future.
curious how you define wearability/what it means to you
Joel you always kill it, feels like you've very much honed in on your style and keep getting better
I really adore the second fit
Second fit is so good!! Jealous of the salomons but will toss in the inspo all the same
I would consider myself the vintage equivalent of the basic bastard. Most of what i wear is in line with what the modern basic bastard model wardrobe looks like but with old garments. I love that my clothes have great wearability, but the worn out, damaged, stained, ect nature of them adds flair to it making it less basic and more unique in a way.
The worn in vintage look suits you so well
I love your shoes and psi I feel like that’s part of your style is your footwear choices
I also feel like part of your style is open toed shoes
I really love the idea of clothes that have already lived a life and now live on in a different way. I find it especially cool when wearing military uniform items but in a contemporary way. Repurposing a purely utilitarian piece of clothing to be something fashionable is fun and rewarding for me
I think this is a pretty good example of where I’m at. I love some of my other outfits where I embrace elements of formality but being in college and all that I have been really valuing comfort a lot more
College comfy core is such a vibe
God of headphones, comfy jacket (with or without hoodie), and psi core
it sounds backwards but I’ve been kind of interested in buying more sweatpants and styling them lol
feel like im going thru the fashion progression the wrong way
I think it’s a valid way
I’ve been trying to go towards hoodies and graphics and less structure
Since the last year I’ve been straying towards tailoring (probably thanks to this community) I wanna go back to my roots
More t shirts for me at least
I feel like this is a really hard question for me because I'm still trying to find out what my style actually is. For the longest time like prep was the only style I could go, but I'm kinda trying to branch out a bit more. My wardrobe is still in flux because I'm obsessed with the idea of forever pieces. I do have forever shoes ready tho, it's those birks
Everyone has that phase when they get into fashion where anything they used to wear like sweatpants is seen as unwearable but a lot of people end up going full circle lol
And that's good
I'll say this fit isn't really you, but this blazer + sweats fits lives in my mind rent free
so basically they can be styled well
love it yeah been feeling very inspired by sweats in sort of like a cool 90s athlete kind of way
I love that look
and not in a purely lazy way
Helps that you’re now 6’7
true and another growth spurt coming soon
GSH been typing up a storm can’t wait to see what he’s cooking
Its a great exercise in developing style too. Being able to circle back to things like sweatpants and making them work is a hard thing to do unless you have a good understanding of style
Leaf shirt good
I used to wear baggy tees and sweats in high school and now I'm back around to big silhouettes and comfort lol
I have a theory that we naturally gravitate to things growing up that we eventually end up back on in our fashion journeys
@Chuckflowers also not to be that person, but I would love an ID on those pants in #1 and #2
I want to tell the world that I am relaxed and friendly and that plants and nature are good. I have been trying to show that through clothing either through material (loose linens/cords/flannels), dyeing techniques (eco printing, bundle dyeing), colors (lots of yellows, browns, but with occasional statement colors), or designs (cute plant/floral embroidery, national parks tees)
.
To further tap into this I will probably keep growing out my hair and buy more story mfg, that seems like a solid plan
Good writeup
Stop showering too (for the environment)
hes living up to his name
white dude discovers leaves
big plant guy
leaves are cool
you are succeeding at what you're going for, your pics always give such a pleasant vibe to me
I joke but the new pieces you got at the end of summer are so sweet
@GSH knowing you only from the discord I kind of figured you’ve been dressing like this for a while but seeing some of the old Reddit fits you sent, you really haven’t at all. Which is impressive because u seem to have a really clear vision and execution of what you like!!
i'm an ex sneakerhead. i think from 2017-2018 onwards i became very bored of what's available in streetwear. i think especially during this past 2-3 years during covid, and people around me becoming financially impacted made me very aware of conspicuous consumption and how much that was intrinsictly tied in to my sense of self.
i made a few conscious decisions in terms of how i buy, i've talked about this a few times:
- i don't like buying internationally where i can help it.
- i like to support local designers and local business.
- i tend to go through periods of not touching retail and only buying 2nd hand.
i think personally i've always had some interest in the future and it's fun to imagine what people might dress like in 20-30 years. in my mind, there's probably some marriage of more dystopian themes and more technical fabrics. i'm inspired by techwear and avant garde and i think this influences my wider sense of style.
i think the inspiration from the avant garde means i'm also more interested in 'genderless' clothing. i just want to be perceived as an amorphous black blob.
For a while I felt somewhat committed to full JJVE, and I still refer a lot to new and past lookbooks for styling inspo, but I found I veered a little too avant garde or “artisanal” for my own tastes. Lately I’ve been picking up more oversized pieces from Hed Mayner (and other brands) to swing back around to slightly more conventional individual pieces with interesting silhouettes.
I’ve also started to really prefer stiffer fabrics over some of the more delicate “drapier” pieces I gravitated towards a few years ago.
This fit is just a jacket, shirt, pants and shoes but I think the pieces work together well and capture the type of silhouette I find interesting these days.
I think this fit from the summer is the look I'm going for. After dressing basic bastard plus for the past couple years, I've settled on a mix of avant-garde-but-not-quite-darkwear, punk, militaria, and lazy luxe. I'm dubbing it rebellious artist-core! This fit hits almost all those notes for me - with better shoes and a more drapey, delicate shirt/top it would be perfect.
Ethan writes a lot of good stuff, but one idea of his that's been living in my head is that our tastes don't change much after getting into fashion, we just execute better. The black jeans, stompy boots, and fun accesories are all things I liked before getting into fashion.
Haha yeah I basically only started liking my fits after the migration to discord. I bit the slim workwear pill pretty hard a long time ago and unfortunately was stagnated a lot on that. But I still posted fit a lot, and forcing myself to post fit really helped me learn what I wanted to change (even tho it makes for a lot of retrospective cringe)
i'm here for your fancy granola aesthetic
Posting fit all the time is the best way to improve
I try to post fit even when I'm not dressin dressin for that reason
i think there’s a lot of sunk cost when you’re buying like $200 flannels and $400 gyw boots, makes it hard to change
No no I was wearing $30 J Crew sale flannels and Thursdays
King shit
Ngl I only post when I like what I wear lol I wear a lot of trash I wouldn’t show
I got so much garbage on my insta that I want to archive but I also like looking at it to see how far we’ve come
I think posting mid fits is good for public perception. Then the good ones stand out better
guess I should try to too
i only post when i have a fit on, the days i don't post im butt ass naked
I feel like everyone here is so good at taking pics, meanwhile I'm stuck in a basement with shitty lighting and 0 knowledge of how to look not shit with a timer
I remember arts skinny jeans era
When he first started posted on the sub
On the busted galaxy s10 that I propped up on my cabinet speaker
my first waywt posts had ass photos
Great fit, wish I could get my raindrop camo jacket looking that good
Actually I think you’ve shown that the best way to improve is the pressure of fitbattle
For me, a lot of what has held me back from wearing what I liked, or even figuring out what I liked has been about body image and social anxiety, and as I’ve made progress with that I’ve been a lot more confident wearing those clothes. I’ve been trying to have more range and use more color (honestly absorbing some of the vibes from here has been helpful for that) but my baseline has always been about accessories and slim fits. I have a lot of cool vintage designer stuff from my yearly summer job at a boutique consignment store, and I’ve been slowly integrating the stuff from my collection that fits into my stuff that I wear which is another journey we’re going on.
God gives the toughest battles to his strongest fit pic warriors
Fitbattle has had a weird effect on me, none of my fits have hit highlights but I’ve won all my battles lol
Dressing worse day to day but better when it counts
At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is if you like it
aw thanks! I know you pull off sick fits with yours too
The only thing that matters is getting compliments at alfargos
Thanks Charli I admit I got the goofy-shoe bug hard 🐛
I think these fits provide a good sampling of me and my influences. Very influenced by workwear, but also influenced by Ivy and streetwear. My interest in fashion started with raw denim and that will always be present to some degree or another, but the last year especially I’ve gone from jeans 90% of the time to jeans like 50% of the time.
you are personal inspo for me and I very much feel the jjve influence, but also this fit feels very personal to you. This and the huge scarf are my favs from you
Love the vest in this one man
Thanks! I love a good vest
Love all your fits. You're a big inspiration for where I'd like to take my style.
Aww shucks I’m flattered
The last year I have converted from full cowboy to now just kind of working parts of my westernwear wardrobe into my outfits with other ideas.
Overall I really like the direction I am headed. Trying to buy more black clothes and work more with shapes/cuts of things rather than leaning on loud colors and and statement pieces like I have in the past. Its a process but I am really enjoying the journey
Next I just need to fix my stupid phone fit pic lighting new footwear besides western boots has been really awesome for me too. The marsell boots in the last pic and the square toe big heel boots in the 2nd are some of my favorite purchases lately
I’ve also really enjoyed tossing my western belt onto fits that wouldn’t have otherwise called for it. Feels like home
Polo in 1 and Sukajan in 2 go crazy
What are these pants tho I need some drop crotch in my life
I've pretty much always been a basic jeans, flannel, and boots guy, and that will always be a part of my style, but I've been trying to branch out of that since getting back into fashion and getting involved in the discord. Also learning to embrace my western impulses instead of shy away from them. Been inspired by a lot of posters here (Spaghetti, Weeg, Danger, Bishop, and many others) to explore new elements and silhouettes. These fits kinda show my present and where I'm trying to go.
I really like that 4th fit
Colors and textures are pleasant to me
I saved that last fit to my inspo folder, felt very in-line with what I want to do right now
I totally see that. That one's a total Isaac fit.
Thank you 🖤
A fair observation!
I still think about that KidSuper Diemme boots fit. You really know how to breathe new life into pieces that I wouldn't imagine going together
That leaf shirt is so GOATED
Because everyone's posting two it seems, I'm gonna throw this one in there because I really am a sucker for big graphics on shirts, and I'm also looking to best represent the lazy luxury style in my own image during the summertime.
Holy
At times I feel like my style is getting pulled in different directions between “true” ivy, Drake’s ivy, and milsurp ivy.
My style is definitely ivy at its core but it’s heavily influenced by what I’m doing on a particular day and what the weather is. If I’m going to the office I lean more drake’s ivy but at home it’s more true/milsurp ivy.
The biggest constants for me are a good hat, ocbd, and denim (or a good merch/dead shirt in the hotter months). Loafers and tailoring are generally reserved for the office and date nights. Looking back at these fits I feel like I have an “office” style and casual style which is interesting to see.
Many years ago I got into clothing production - learned how to draft patterns by hand (then comptuer), ran a single (mostly failed) production run for a friend from start to finish -- sourcing trims and fabrics, drafting, grading, handmaking samples, logistics, doing QA, etc.
This led to an appreciate for the craft of clothing/clothes As An Object. I love how there are always new ideas from big makers like Bottega developing treatments to make leather look like jersey to my niece who crochets 'patches' to stitch on her shirts. I love to embrace these ideas as a challenge and support makers who are doing new things, or shops that are supporting those makers.
What this has meant for my style is it's far less coherent than it's ever been. I miss way more often than I hit. That said, I find a lot of joy in what I wear and everything that hangs in my closet. It's also a challenge that I can't purchase the Most Extreme stuff as I try to not alienate the folks around me here in the Home Of the Pyramid Scheme (West Michgan)
For what I appreciate in this posted fit: the shirt is a woven oxford cloth but all the thread is tencel instead of cotton. The jeans are an artwork of a patchwork (goofy but clearly not just from wear/tear) and the shoes have a weird fastener and a hidden elastic so you don't even need laces.
This was a great read
I want to give a shout to you about being in the clothing production realm, that is honestly so cool. The tiny details of your clothes is really awesome and I’m glad you’re able to share that. I love the elements of details integrated into the designs where it’s fun for those who share the same sentiment towards clothes as an object instead of a fashion statement.
I really want to start working sweatpants in more to be incongruous
very on brand with the ALD inspo
I hit highlights with a blazer and hoodie, the next step is to do it with a blazer over a full sweatsuit
How about a blazer that's also a sweatsuit

🪦 to the OG UU. That sweatsuit was so comfy (but the kneebags, oh man the kneebags)
I only have the jacket but I love it so much, shame about the knees tho
these three are probably a good summary of what I aim to do, I think I feel differently from day to day and want to represent myself differently but I tend to want to do something simple but well executed or with a personal twist, something that makes it feel more me whatever that means. I've been pushing in a lot of different directions recently and that's what feels most honest and has been the most fun for me
Warning: styling circa 2017

If you find old Jan Jan like this on the secondhand market - they fit big. My pair is small and the waist is 17”. Modern Jan Jan is closer to “TTS” in the waist.

These two outfits are a tie for how I want the world to see me. While my style isn't as adventurous as many in the sub (channel?), I always feel the most "me" in classic menswear, even though I can't afford it on the level to impress the Styleforum folks.
This one is my favorite, though ideally I’d have some Chelsea boots instead I think. Generally, I think this jacket brings out my best, with its mix of coziness, structure, and a little relaxed. Feels like as good reflection of my personality as any.
Funny I think you have a very SF friendly style. Clean, conservative classic menswear.
It’s mostly that I can’t afford to go past the Spier/Collaro price range and get into true bespoke, etc.
I lurk on SF, but don’t post, because I know I’m not doing anything revolutionary on that front
I liked SF because you can do a deep dive on relatively approachable threads. That place was stacked with Spier stuff around 2017-2019 (and the Spier thread is still fairly active)
I generally get the impression that the solution to most sartorial issues on SF is to spend more money, which is frustrating when you’ve hit your ceiling financially
Unfortunately that’s often the answer to clothing lol
This is an ✨old✨ fit (from last year around this time) but it really encapsulates everything I love/enjoy about fashion/dressing myself - all of the pieces are sustainably made (if you’re counting thrifted pants as sustainable), the cardigan is soft & cozy & I feel like I can actually wear the whole outfit for an entire day (and it doesn’t really matter if I’m at home/at the office/in school).
I’m trying to add more pants/shoes to my wardrobe that dress up fits - I was big into suits as a kid so I love the idea of outfits being casual but still somewhat put together/“formal”. Also loving the idea of a sick pair of pants + a white t shirt these days.
is the cardigan from corridor?
Yes! Last seasons I believe?
yeah their cardigans are super cool but i havent really gotten to see them in fits
like im looking at a scarf rn and can't find a fit pic to save my life lmao
Go for itttt
They make quality stuff
