Favorites Series: Dress Shirts Edition - Topic of the day 9/25/23

What are your favorite dress shirts? Favorite brands at low medium and high price points? What do you look for in a dress shirt? What brands have been great for them and what brands have really let you down? (Note: the Favorites Series will be running ~weekly as a new way of the outdated "Best X for $X" threads on MFA.)

Proper Cloth and similarly priced MTM brands are really nice. My main gripe is that spread collars are somehow popular for dress shirts and they almost universally look terrible. Also dress shirts w/o a tie I think just look bad.

The semi-spread poplin shirt in not-non-iron fabric seems to be an impossible ask if you're hoping to spend fewer than 100 dollaridoos. Larimars is one of the few places that offers a cheap option but I haven't partaken, because at the lady minute I decided to spend five times as much from stalwart Kamakura. absolutely hated my uniqlo dress shirt 😭 the fabric irritated my neck solid for the price, as with everything else Spier sells

Yep they suck but if I just need a throw away shirt it’s better than the stuff you find at like ross or tj maxx

my fav dress shirt is my only dress shirt, a white poplin from Kent Wang. I sent them a shirt that fit me well and they made a shirt with the same dimensions. Super soft, feels great, cost me $100ish. Wouldn't recommend doing MTM shirts unless you go in person or send in a shirt to replicate though

yeahhh and I wouldn't trust things OTR from Kent Wang, they have one cut and haven't updated it in a decade

I recently needed to buy a new dress shirt and the only OTR straight collar I could find anywhere was from Charles Tyrwhitt (as a man with an extremely square face, I can't do super spread collars, which is apparently the only kind of dress shirt sold anywhere in 2023). I paid something like $80 which felt like way too much but I think it turned out to be a reasonably high-quality shirt and I'm pleased with it.

Luxire, Proper Cloth, Individualized, Yeossal, 100 Hands Eton, Kiton and Charvet make sick shirts but I don’t got that kinda money or the need

Spier is really hard to beat for the price, and Charles Tyrwhitt would be the only option if you need something for even less. Mid-tier is kind of a weird spot imo. I’d rather go MTM with luxire over something like Kamakura. Luxire is great if you know your measurements. They can do just about anything you can imagine. I haven’t worn a proper dress shirt in years and see no need to buy another. I have a white Oxford cloth long point from drake’s that serves as my “formal” dress shirt, and for everything else there’s the OCBD.

I'd love a white oxford point collar

PRL classic fit, because they are widely and cheaply available on eBay. 🙂

My brooks brothers shirts are all I’ve needed for a decade plus, but I imagine details and construction may have changed.

Keep saying I'll get some Mercer & Sons OCBDs, but the price keeps being completely absurd. One of these days

Kamakura are my go to shirts. Back when they had an NYC store I was able to get sized and stock up. G. Inglese are a splurge, but are great shirts. I usually pick one up from NMWA at end of season sales.

Really? I thought an ivy boy would be the first to argue an OCBD is not a dress shirt (yes yes I know there's royal oxford, pinpoint oxford, etc)

Eton is good if you are in Europe, but their price in the US is higher than many MTM services.
