Barbour

The closest you ever got to achieving your dream of living on the cold Atlantic coastline was that one time you went to the Jersey Shore. You tried to order a Guinness, but you could only get an Irish Car Bomb.

There's seriously not a Barbour thread yet? Anyway, wondering if anybody can shed some light on the re-waxing service. I have a very loved engineered garments barbour jacket that I'd really like to have re-waxed before the weather gets shitty.

Supposedly it’s easy to DIY but I always send mine in. Takes 2-4 weeks and I think it’s $35 (might be $50 with shipping). Fwiw, I get mine rewaxed every 2-3 years but best bet is to go by how well it repels water. Barbour’s CS is incredible but repairs/alterations are pricey.

So, just out of curiosity, how hot does the Beaufort run? I'm in Texas so like mid 70s is when I'd throw on a normal jacket/thin sweatshirt. I'm really interested in these jackets, but for the price (I know it's not absurd, but still pricy for me) I'm just curious how much yearly usage I'd get out of it. Also, I'm curious if there's any like outstanding alternatives to take a look at in the sub 120ish dollar range? Probably isn't, but worth checking with yall
Jawn Mayer

Not waxed cotton obviously, but maybe similar enough. Saw them in store and thought they looked good https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E459592-000/00?colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=004
UNIQLO

I can’t comment on alternatives, but I probably start reaching for my barbours when the temp dips into the lower 50’s
LeisurelyLoafing
LeisurelyLoafing14mo ago
You can buy them used on eBay all day for 100. Fwiw, I don’t wear mine until it’s in the low 60s (and raining). It’s not super heavy but the wax doesn’t breath well. Also Cox the saddler has great deals on new ones (I think like 200)

I rewaxed mine myself. It took about an hour, and the branded wax dressing is easy to work with. The only problem is that you can only buy the thornproof dressing; if you want to keep the Sylkoil finish, you'll need to send it in. I thornproofed over my Sylkoil, and went a little heavy-handed with it -- I pull the jacket out now and then and rub it with a rag/paper towel to try and get some of the wax off.

(granted, I live in SoCal where the temps are still high enough to make the wax soft enough during the day. Once it gets cold enough to actually wear, the wax may firm up a bit; but until then, I don't want to wear this jacket sitting on anything nice, like my new car!)

leroideskiki14mo ago
It was definitely a Bedale, it was noted on the collar. It's surprising because here in France it's letters and not numbers in stores and on second-hand websites, but I can see that on the Barbour site they are numbers 🤔

I 100% think more about how people perceive than they actually do think about me, but I’m noticeably English and living in a staunchly working class part of Wales, so the Barbour just kind of exaggerates that difference

Holfram14mo ago
Not British but for what it’s worth, I was brought up as working class as it gets. I’m now a teacher and idgaf, I’ll wear my Barbour with all its baggage. Honestly I enjoy it - annoying the landed gentry by obviously just being who I am while appropriating their style.
josh_maxwell
josh_maxwell14mo ago
Live in Texas as well - I have one and love it but it's pretty warm so I usually wait until it drops into the low 60s or so before I even think about pulling it out. It and a Battenwear parka I got a steal on are pretty much my only cold weather jackets.

Depends what you want to do with it. The main thing about sizing a Barbour is getting the sleeve length right - it doesn’t matter too much if it’s oversized. I go one up from my suit size so I can wear a jacket under my Beaufort.

Can I have a fit check on my Beaufort? Most of the time I put it on I feel that it’s too large on me, and it makes me uncomfortable. I have a 96cm chest, and I’m around 177cm tall, slim build. I bought a size 40”, I thought I need a bigger size if I want to layer it over a sport coat. (Occasionally I do that, but in reality I mostly wear it over just a sweater) I can’t help but wonder that I chose the wrong size and the 38” would fit me better. Not sure if I had the sleeves shortened it’d help, or if the coat is too boxy, too. I took a bunch of pictures wearing it over a sweater from all sides. Then another wearing it just over a shirt, and one with a shirt and jacket. Pinging @dieworkwear because in retrospect I went against the sizing recs he wrote on Putthison 😦

This seems fine. These things are supposed to fit like a bit of a potato sack. IMO the most important thing is getting the sleeve length right (which is why I size UP in these) - rest doesn’t matter as much. I think you sized appropriately - it’s probably really a matter of you not liking the fit of the jacket itself, which a lot of people do once they get one. That’s why the second hand market for these is more than saturated.

Just wanted to second all the recommendations for Cox the Saddler when buying Barbour from the US. I paid $220 USD delivered for a Hereford from them, vs. $395 USD from the Barbour US site. And Sara was super helpful in helping me determine what size to get.
