I get that people like specific styles but sunglasses are one of those things that I never spend much money on because I beat them up so much, drop them, get sand in them at the beach, etc. I could never trust myself with a pair that costs more than $20
I spent too much on SLP glasses again
I get free sunglasses with my vision insurance
So I ended up with 2 pairs of Ray Bans
When I was on double vision insurance I was doing that
I needed not wayfarers
The other thing that I didn't know until embarrassingly recently was that you can ask an optician to adjust your sunglasses.
I have a huge noggin and just assumed that they were supposed to pinch your temples
Turns out that the hooks behind your ears are enough to keep them in place
I am not smart
People use heat guns to manipulate the arms
I had to do that with my optical prescriptions
My sunnies have no prescription, purely for resting eyes

Love the magnet clips from Rigards. Was curious for a hot minute but ended up going a little more modest with Matsudas. Any brands with cool magnetic clip on lenses?

Yeah the detailing is very nice and refined. Titanium frames makes it hard to go back to acetate and it’s definitely a feature I look for when I look at new pairs. I believe many of Rigard glasses are titanium frames too.

i love the delicate look of a thin metal frames, almost tempted to just get a vintage pair from the 1920s or something
Yeah there’s a really nice vintage glasses shop by us that has a lot of really cool old school frames like that for pretty cheap
Like ~100 mostly which seems super reasonable
the only thing is the pairs that i've handled have all felt extremely fragile, also the arms always seem to be so short.

I like that most (all?) come polarized, but for the price point I’m not sure you’ll get anything that feels much fancier. Gotta spend a lot more to get more premium feeling sunglasses

i have a $20 pair of clubmaster shaped glasses from amazon there is really no need to buy high end sunglasses unless you like the idea of it being branded
or if it's a sunglass shape that isn't replicated often

Depending on the brand there’s a difference in build quality and uv protection but there are lots of expensive glasses that are scams basically

If you like clubmasters you'd probably like wayfarers as well. Both I feel have hit oversaturation in the past few years but I think they still look quite nice. I still don't know what the budget looks like and I'd probably recommend Raybans even if I'm not fond of the brand or any Luxxotica related labels.

Wayfarers and clubmasters are some of the most ripped off glasses available. They fit most face shapes and have been popular for decades.

Having to get two sets of prescription glasses at once is whack
Then you inevitably don’t update the sunglasses at the same time as your real glasses and you get a headache when you where them

Yeah I think what you say makes sense. Esp because I have a prescription where I need to be wearing glasses constantly and not just to read/drive. It does limit my options a bit but I think there are some nice glasses with clips out there
If you have the option go for magnetic clips

I do non prescription sunglasses with contacts. it's pretty inconvenient since I have to plan ahead when I want to wear my sunglasses, but I get to try out different styles
I still have a pair of sunglasses I left on the Shinkansen, presumably doing laps round Japan to this day
If I want sunglasses with prescription lenses, do I basically have to buy from a place that sells glasses with prescription lenses, or is there some sort of aftermarket service that ends up cheaper and isn't dodgy? Will online stores work out to be cheaper than in person chains?
Some online stores will likely be cheaper, but it should be cheap enough to use a local optician. If you have insurance, its acceptance will guide the choice.
Adding prescription lenses isn't dodgy, though I always get them with the frames since I'm in the US and it means that then the frames get covered by FSA.

garrett leight is pretty solid and if you plan to keep/wear them for a while i'd say go for it. but, im assuming they're going to be prescription lenses? when i used to wear glasses, i'd have to update my prescription every year (which meant new frames) so that might be something to consider if money is a concern
They are although my perscription does not change that often plus you can put in new lenses. Were you perhaps younger at the time
i was in my 20s. ive asked about replacing lenses once and they told me it'd be cheaper just to get new frames instead, which never really made sense to me... and then i got lasik done, which was life-changing
That is odd changing lenses every year plus opticians will generally put in lenses as far as I'm aware
Was also thinking about Persol which would be significantly cheaper altough probably not as nice
im a fan of persol as well, but more for their sunglasses. oliver peoples is another good choice, though i feel like their quality has gone down a bit recently
I like their designs but Luxoticca frames are not great from what I have heard

I really love how the copper and bronze materials look

can anyone speak to their experience with prescription sunglasses (especially if you have a really high index)? i figure it's a better use of whatever extra tax refund i get than cowboy boots
if you're in the US the best way to do it is to tack on FSA payment
or HSA
you could also consider clip ons
i have Rx sunglasses now and i feel like i can never go back. If cost is a consideration you could do Costco or Zenni online. Warby parker has stylish ones (imo) for sub $150
but definitely worth it imo especially with vision insurance
Seconding costco for prescription sunnies, I think I paid $150 ish total including the frame and lens for a pair of rayban-looking ones. Make sure that you can have it reimbursed if costco is out of network (which I will guess it is for most providers)

I mostly wear the just-glasses
the just-sunglasses are good for outdoor activities/sports/cycling
the combos are good for adventures since they go on and off and on
i have 3 pairs of sunglasses and 4 pairs of regular glasses, but my prescription has been roughly the same for the past 5 years, so i accumulated those over time
I have basically the same setup as Zach except my just glasses and just sunglasses are both out of date so I just wear the ones that have clip ons
So much better than shuffling glasses and sunglasses
I effectively have one that I actually wear but I have 3 other pairs. 1 is a pair that I used to wear more but don't like anymore and the other 2 were free pairs that I didn't hate enough to get rid of.
