Direct upload from mobile
There are feature requests to add Immich to the system's share menu in github. That would allow one to select images / videos from any different app and share it to immich app, which would then upload it to the server

There is no technical limitation per say. The assets displayed in the timeline is currently coupled with the album selection from the backup. Maybe we can decouple them during the backup refactor that is planned sometime in the future. Then, the library section would display all the local albums from the device and users can upload individual assets as well

It is either completely automatic uploads or complete manual uploads. You can turn off automatic backup but select the albums in the backups page so that the assets from the albums shows up in the main timeline. You can then manually select those assets from the timeline, and there should be a button in the bottom sheet to manually upload them. Not the most intuitive way, but this should allow you to only manually upload assets from the mobile app

All photo descriptions are fine
I tested this on main and for me, they are not populated immediately. i.e, on the first opening of the bottom sheet, but If I close and open it again, the description is getting populated.

people feature photo doesn't update
Yes, this is a one time thing to add the required co-ordinates of faces used for this feature. This was also mentioned in the changelog, below the demo video of this feature
