First Penny Loafer

Hey everyone, I'm looking to branch out in my shoes beyond the chukkas I wear every day, and am going to get my first pair of loafers. My question is, would a darker brown like #8 chromexcel or tobacco calf or a lighter brown like chestnut calf be better as far as versatility? Is the darker brown too formal for more casual outfits?
