Turns out, I'm just a doofus. After my most recent reinstall, I didn't set up game mode since I knew it wouldn't work (and I was booting directly to desktop). Apparently bazzite-steam likely has some dependency on game-mode and once I set it up and logged in, it fixed my issue. steam remembers who I am now.

so the application in the launcher seems to be running
/usr/bin/bazzite-steam running that from command line reproduces the issue. Running /usr/bin/steam works normally43 replies

Hah. Funny enough, when i try to start steam from command line to see the output, it logs me in properly...
