Why does this look bad
This picture is from a couple years ago, but this is a typical spring/summer outfit for me. I can't get the fit/proportions right. The running shoes look like boats. The shorts are just your typical medium inseam chinos, but they are bunched up looking. If you look at me from the side, I have hyperlordosis so my back has this weird curve that makes it look like I have a big butt or something

the low socks help emphasize the shoes in a way that you’re not liking
i would recommend a lighter profile sneaker typically
or if you want to keep the chunky shoes match with bigger shorts
agreed
Didn't even think of that
Example?
The silhouette of these shorts just does not look right either. I can't put my thumb on why
I think its the length and width siting at a weird spot
I think its either gotta be a little shorter and like kinda really short but that doesnt seem like vibe you are going for i think a bit longer and wider would be better
example of the only shorts i own but i think they sit nicer beacuse the legs are wider and have some room to be away from my legs, length i like but i dont think being shorter would hurt the wideth maters to me

I don't think this is "really bad", it's just kinda dude wearing clothes. It all sits within the spectrum of fits etc. It's probably "better" than many people.
However, it also just looks like you went to a department store and picked out whatever items and then just put them on with no thought as to the whole.
Shorts with a more interesting silhouette, a polo with more interesting texture or fit, lighter sneakers, socks would probably all help as suggested.
Totally unrelated but I have the same curve to my back and never knew it had a name until I read your post lol
This answers most of the points from a outfit perspective but imo another thing worth considering is the photo itself. It's a spring/summer fit but the photo is on a grey overcast kind of day and photo is just a straight shot of you standing straight with your arms together in front of you.
Like if you had worn the exact same outfit from your photo but posed and in lighting/angling from this photo you'd probably like how it looked more. Imo fit pics are like 70% the fit and 30% the pic and it's easy to feel like you're constantly missing something when you're comparing your fits to the fit pics from inspo boards. Still, all the advice about the fit from the people above is definitely good advice and could improve the outfit.
the picture impacts things inasmuch everything converges to the flag atop the bridge making your feet look bigger in contrast
i agree with the others but the only thing I'll add is that "bumched up" feeling might be because the back rise is set too low (which i also encounter though i tend to just shrug it off) - if you pull the back of your shorts up it will probably go away
like a low top converse is pretty light

I wonder if tucking in the polo would make a difference
Yeah when I was younger kids said I had a frying pan ass 😂😂😂
@zeometer (highly pollenated) yes the picture was not well taken, I have issues with trusting other people to take my picture. I'm pretty good at taking pics for people though
Oh you mean lightweight
no also visually light
no chunky sole
Tucking would make it different but IMO it wouldn't make it better. Chopper is talking about each individual item here. The actual fit and details and how they work together.
Or don't work together.
@dekema-the-rower sitting aside the way the pieces fit - what kind of vibe are you looking to hit with something like this?
As others have suggested, I think there’s a mismatch between the shirt and shorts. With these shorts I think a more relaxed fit shirt would be better or some shorter shirts with this shirt. I think you could also improve the shoes but that’s a longer discussion
Looking back on this it seems like there was no forethought at the time 😂
But this is a consequence of having limited items in my wardrobe that actually fit right and can be mixed and matched to produce something that's visually appealing
Sure but what generally style do you find visually appealing? A basic fit like this is easy shift into ivy if that’s what you’re going for
