Zippers vs Buttons - Topic of the day 4/11/25

There are two camps in the world: zipper people and buttons people. Whether its on your jacket or the fly of your jeans, you have to decide which one you want. Do you think a garment is better quality if there is one over the other? What is currently more stylish?

Zipper fly all the way. Only real downside over buttons is the zippers tend to bunch up more

The one thing that's fun about a button fly is when you just get to tear them all open

button fly is only useful due to raw denim shrinkage, otherwise zippers are more functional

Don’t care for pants. Buttons on certain types of jackets and zippers on certain types of coats can be tough tho

Buttons are cool when brands get custom ones. They're also much easier to fix/replace.

They're both fine imo 👍

Zipers are more practical

My fat ass spreads the zipper apart and pulls it down when I walk. Never mind that zippers break at the time and are a pain to repair. Buttons or bust

The button flies on jeans with metal shanks (riveted maybe?) are good. I have one pair of pants with sewn in buttons and they are much harder on and off.

Good zippers > buttons but buttons > crappy zippers

pretty common in workwear/raw denim its also kiko kostadinov's thing and there are quite a few brands that sprouted off that aesthetic, like namacheko ami paris also uses it on basically all their pants and they're pretty solid trousers you can generally find at a solid discount (I've seen plenty $50-100)

I love how all the controversy is around jeans. 🤣 No one thinks twice about buttons on a jacket. I haven't had a button fly in probably 20 years but remember it being annoying AF at the time. In the market for my first pair of "good" jeans. Will update if I end up with a pair that has a button fly.

Buttons for pants. They are atypical and make the garment more interesting. (But if all my pants had buttons, maybe I'd be saying "zippers")

i mean i get the thought process for this, but for me nobody else (realistically) is gonna see if i’m wearing zipper or button fly jeans hence my preference shifting towards what’s more convenient

Tbf button fades can be visible, but that's very denim nerd stuff.

I think zippers on jackets and shirts can be a nice optical detail because of the way they make the fabric edge drape, if you know what I mean?

like with this shirt for example. Very round drape because the open zipper gives the edge a bit of rigidity.
