Body measurements
Anyone have any good resources for measuring areas for tailors/custom stuff? Thinking of ordering a spier and Mackay suit but they need measurements and my local tailor won’t take the measurements for someone else.
S/M said they need chest, stomach, natural waist, thigh, hips/seat and I will have to take those measurements myself, or at least get very close.
Any good images/how tos?

Do you own any suits right now? It is easier to measure clothing laid flat than your body.
Nope, first suit
I do have a fabric tape measure but I understand that’s not necessarily the be all end all solution
Dumb question - since it's your first suit, have you tried off the rack instead of made to measure?
Not a dumb question - I haven’t tried a ton of off the rack options, mainly as my experience in the past has been less than stellar. I’m a bit oddly shaped with bodybuilder proportions.
I’m getting married in August and S/M has a sage green suit which is the color I want and not available locally except for 3x the price. I want to measure myself and get “close” or see if I can get close enough so it can be slightly altered in 16 weeks when I’m in a different shape
Ask your local tailor if they will do the measurements if you pay for their time.
It is usually included in services, like a free quote, so if you offer to compensate they might be willing.
I asked he still said no. And yes, I probably have other local tailors but I’ve worked with this guy a few times already and we have a good rapport. I was hoping to get close enough. Sadly of another tailor is the way to go, that may be it
That surprises me, but yeah. Maybe a sewing hobby group or friend of friend but for ordering a suit being sure has advantages.
Do you have a fancier department store like Nordstrom? That’s where I got measured. I ended not buying a suit from there but I bought my shirt, belt, and tie from there so I didn’t feel too bad.
i dont actualy remember the last time i was in Nordstrom but yes i have one (im in calgary). perhaps worth a call for sure. thanks
ya its not a full custom or MTM - just one of the ones spier has on their site so i think i only need to be close. needs more investigation
Do you have a link?
it's also not hard to measure yourself tbh just go on youtube and I bet there's a million video guides

they have how-tos for everything you need
Spier should have a guide on their website that says what measurements are needed
@artvandelayimporting I checked a couple whole at the gym and saw mostly female ones and didn’t check many links tbh. Being what I imagine is a fairly individual industry I wasn’t sure if there was consistency amongst tailors for measuring spots.
@awburkey hey beans, welcome to my other suit/fitment/wedding questions. I did reach out and the consultant at spier did say they needed the measurements above (chest, waist, thigh etc) I just wasn’t sure exactly where/how to measure these points as my tailor didn’t want to.
Check out proper cloth. I think they have guides and videos. It’s fairly standard
Will do
