Can these trousers be altered to "fit" or should I send them back?

These look and feel way too big for me, but I think I usually wear pants that are too small, and I am trying to learn how to wear pants that fit properly. These are classic cut high rise trousers from Spier and Mackay. I did not realize they had no belt loops when I bought them. They are unhemmed so don't mind the length here. My immediate reaction is they are wildly too big. I feel like I am swimming in them. But maybe they're closer to correct than I realize? Since I'm new to classic cut, baggier fits. Obviously the waist needs to come in and the length hemmed, after that will they look proper or are they plumb too big (and why)?

The legs don’t look too wide to me. Are you using the little tabs on the side to adjust the waist? That can help take it in a little bit

admittedly I did not engage the tabs, I assumed they would not be able to close the gap on their own so to speak. google told me the tabs are meant for minor adjustments through the day

You mentioned you're new to more relaxed fits, so it will just take some time to adjust. Also the unhemmed length is messing with the shape and so they probably look and feel worse than they would after they're hemmed.

that's a good point

the side adjusters should give you +/- an inch or two in the waist so I would mess with those.

right on! you guys are giving me more confidence to keep them, thanks headed to the tailor anyway for the hems so I'll ask her about the waist too

The waist and seat can be tailored. Your tailor will know best whether it’s too much or not. Generally you can tailor up or down ~2 sizes before things get really wonky
